Value & Conclusion

  • The SilverStone Raven RV05 sells for just under 100 euro including taxes or 115 US dollars excluding taxes.
  • Extravagant exterior design
  • 90° turned internal layout
  • 2x 180 mm Air Penetrator fans for excellent cooling
  • Fan controllers for each of those fans
  • Tool-less HDD cage
  • No distracting 5.25" drive bays
  • Magnetic dust filter for PSU vent
  • Sturdy construction
  • Slimline ODD bay in front
  • 1x SSD slot behind motherboard tray
  • GPUs of well over 300 mm in length will fit
  • 120 mm tower coolers will fit
  • Clean looks, once a bit of time and energy has been put into routing everything properly
  • Extremely long PSUs will not fit without sacrificing the HDD cage
  • Can only hold 4 HDDs
  • Very few points to secure loose cable on the motherboard tray
  • Top cover needs to be removed to reach fan controllers
  • Side panels may be hard to take off
  • Window with round corners does not fit edgy overall design
Silverstone has always been known for creating very elaborate cases and the Raven RV05 is certainly no exception. Sure, such detailed designs require a lot of plastic, but the RV05 is really sturdy and does not feel cheap. Utilizing the 90-degree-turned internal layout without 5.25" drive bays, the chassis is also quite compact, though with enough room to fit a full ATX board, 300+ mm long GPU, and 120m tower cooler. Those looking to use liquid cooling may do so by fitting such a solution to the floor, but such a setup makes the removal of both 180 mm Air Penetrator fans a must.

Which brings me to the cooling: The fans within the RV05 are perfectly placed to aid in keeping temperatures down, and the unique interior allows for hot air due to GPU and CPU to rise and exit through the top. To further push the envelope, SilverStone has also put a ton of effort into engineering many of the chassis' aspects in as intricate a manner as possible. This goes from the interior with its completely toolless HDD cage to the exterior with its complex spring-loaded locking mechanism for both side panels and on to the perfectly shaped dust filter on the chassis' underside or the V-shaped LED in the front.

Sure, the SilverStone RV05 may not be for everyone, but those who like "loud" cases - and I mean loud in terms of design as the Air Penetrator fans can be silenced beautifully thanks to their embedded fan controllers - should certainly look at this one. Especially since it clocks in below that magical 100 euro mark.
