Silverstone Strider Gold Evolution 1000 W Review

Value and Conclusion

  • The Silverstone Strider Gold Evolution 1000W retails for $213.99
  • High efficiency overall
  • Fairly good ripple suppression
  • Fully modular cabling design
  • High quality cooling fan
  • Low output noise
  • Provided fan filter
  • Loose voltage regulation at 3.3V
  • Performance of 3.3V rail in Advanced Transient Response tests
  • Small warranty period (competition gives 5-7 years)
  • Lacks an On/Off switch
Instead of presenting an entire new line, Silverstone preferred to upgrade/improve their older Strider Gold series keeping the cost of Strider Gold evolution units at reasonable levels. A smart move in these tough economic times. The ST1000-G Evolution surely can't compete with some of today's top performing units like the fresh Seasonic Platinum 1000, Antec HCP-1200 or Corsair AX1200 but nevertheless it provides good performance while it costs much less and on top of that is much quieter than all of the aforementioned units when things get tough (full load with high ambient).
The fan that Silverstone used in this PSU is of high quality and produces low noise even at full speed, so it will be greatly appreciated by users that look for a high powered unit with the lower possible output noise. Also the fully modular design along with the quality construction add to the overall rating. So do the provided fan filter and the good efficiency.
The things that I would like to see improved in this unit are the loose voltage regulation at 3.3V, under 40mV ripple at +12V with full load and smaller deviation at 3.3V in dynamic loads. I would also like to see +12V registering within 2% voltage regulation. Finally a longer warranty period would increase the unit's competitiveness and an On/Off switch would come in handy in many cases.

To conclude, the ST1000-G Evolution boasts good performance overall, although not ground breaking. It is one of the quietest 1000W units, features a fully modular design and has good efficiency even at low loads. Also the fact that it currently is the most affordable fully modular, Gold efficiency, 1 kW unit makes it even more attractive.
