SteelSeries SteelSound 3H Review

Durability

The SteelSound 3H is generally speaking a durable construction even though it's light weight. But there are some weak points in the design. To start off with the place where the cord connects to the ear cup it is only covered with a little rubber tube, which means that the stresses from pull in the cable are only dampened by the internal connectors and that little rubber tube.

Another little durability issue that you can see on this picture is the really thin piece of plastic that is used by the adjustment mechanism, this is not a problem in normal use but it does make it more likely to break if you stuff it in your backpack.

A durability plus is by far the heavy duty connectors used by SteelSound, they are big and have a long follow up plastic tube which helps to reduce the stress on the connector itself because it absorbs some of the strain coming from the cord.

Value & Conclusion

  • The SteelSound 3H can be bought directly from SteelSeries for $50.

The performance of this headset did really surprise me, I didn't expect such a relatively cheap headset to provide such excellent sound quality. One of the things that amazed me with this headset is just how small it is when you fold it, the ultra-transportable design is a definitive plus because it makes this headset ideal if you want to use it both with your PC and MP3 player. I really like the transportable design but it does come at the price of reduced durability. I think that SteelSound has been able to maintain a good build quality and an above standard durability with the 3H's construction, but it just isn't as durable as the SteelSound 4H/5H for example.
This headset really adds some unique features to the SteelSound line, it's a good headset that isn't that expensive compared to SteelSound 4H/5H or the Sennheiser PC line of products.
I think that the SteelSound 3H is a good little headset which excels in providing a decent audio performance at a low price, the fact that it's so easy to move around with it increases the value of this headset because it can be used with an MP3 player.
