Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing a frustrating issue with my GTX 1060 6GB ASUS GPU. It performs flawlessly for everyday tasks and lighter games like League of Legends, but when I attempt to play more demanding games such as Elden Ring, it shuts down after about 5 minutes of use and gives no absolute error just like alt+f4. I've tried numerous solutions to resolve the issue, including:

  • Testing the GPU on multiple PCs, all exhibiting the same problem.
  • Underclocking and undervolting the GPU.
  • Changing BIOS settings.
  • Cleaning the GPU thoroughly and replacing the thermal paste.
Despite these efforts, the problem persists. I'm concerned that the issue might harder than i thought could potentially involve the gpu processor or other costly components.

I consulted a repair shop, and they suggested that the GPU might require a reball or reflow. However, the repair cost is around $40 more or less, which is beyond my current budget constraints. I'm hoping to explore other potential solutions before resorting to this option.

Here are the specs of my PC:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 4650G
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M H
  • PSU: 450W 80+ White (local brand)
If anyone has experienced similar issues or has suggestions for diagnosing and resolving this problem, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks in advance for your help!

Firstly. local brand PSU really doesnt help.

Secondly copper anti-seize on those ram chips sure as hell aint helping either.

Best thing you can do is test the card in a different machine. That is the quickest and most definitive way to find out which thing is the broken one. If the GPU works fine then its the PSU that is faulty. If the GPU is faulty then the PSU is fine (but i still wouldnt recommend local brand unless local brand is seasonic)

"450W White local brand" Be specific, and have you actually looked it up in the 80 Plus website? That power supply absolutely reeks of an impending failure and I would treat it as an active hazard and threat to your components. Replace this component at your earliest convenience, and remember, your computer parts don't care if you're poor: and it will DEFINITELY be more expensive to replace whatever it kills in addition to the power supply itself.

That GPU looks to be very dirty. What's in the RAM chips, is that thermal putty or paste? This PCB needs to be completely cleaned with isopropyl or contact cleaner spray, and appropriate thermal pads should be reinstalled on this card.

$50 for a 1060 6GB in this condition is about what it's worth. This card is not damaged but it needs maintenance.

just to be clear the psu is totally good i have been working with it for like 3 years now have tried rtx 2060 super on it / rx 6600 / rx 580 / gtx 1660 super , never ever had a similar problem thank you for the advice but i am sure with the psu is not the problem , especially that i tried the gpu on 4 different pc's
+
- idk about the PCB it was even dirtier and i cleaned it as much as i can
- the thing on the RAM i really have no idea about it but the cooler does not have place for the thermal pads even if i put them they won't connect
- is not the 50$ the problem , the real problem is the repair shop is not sure if he can fix it
idk, at this very momen't i may not have that budget but i am not quite sure if it's worth fixing that's my problem i paid 50$ for it and i thought it was good deal, now i know why it was so cheap i mean if i pay 50$ + 50$ , i couldve get something much better like rx 5600 / rx 5700 or idk gtx 1660s
and ty for the answer but the real question does it worth to go with the reflow or the rebull ?

That would make me suspect GPU core unstable from overheating. I had stuff like that with GTA V on my GTX 960, GTA V was terminated unexpectedly multiple times, (Suddenly, I'm back at the desktop! Not even a genuine exception error message!) while driving. But it didn't happen until after I did missions, making me think it was unstable from heat. Because a while later, after that gaming day, IIRC, I saw that it was hot without me cranking up the fan. Guess I should have made a custom fan setting with Afterburner.
That was in 2018 and on May 29, 2019, I got a used Asus Strix GTX 970, where I had no such issue. Unless the VRAM got too hot on the GTX 960 card? I would think the GPU core before the VRAM, because the GTX 960 blower fan was going too slow.

Check Windows logs, there must be something related to your issue in event viewer.
Have you tried other driver versions? Like older ones not the latest?
