ASUS Launches the TUF Gaming VG34VQL3A 180 Hz WQHD Curved Monitor

ASUS has added a new addition to its TUF Gaming series of monitors, which goes under the model name VG34VQL3A. The new monitor is a 34-inch ultra-wide model with a WQHD or 3440 x 1440 resolution. It features a 180 Hz refresh rate panel that has a 1500R curvature and a peak brightness in both SDR and HDR mode of 400 cd/m². The panel itself is of VA type and features a common LED backlight and delivers a 1 ms GtG response time, a 4000:1 contrast ratio and finally covers 125 percent of the sRGB colour gamut.

When it comes to gaming features, ASUS has added support for Freesync Premium Pro as well as Adaptive Sync and the VG34VQL3A also sports support for ELMB (Extreme Low Motion Blur) and variable overdrive, which are two features you normally only find on higher-end gaming monitors. Included are of course ASUS typical gaming features like shadow boost, FPS counter, crosshairs etc. as well as various presets for different modes. When it comes to connectivity, ASUS has somewhat unusually equipped the VG34VQL3A with two DP 1.4 inputs, as well as two HDMI 2.0 inputs. There's also a three port USB Type-A hub that supports speed of up to 10 Gbps. The supplied stand supports tilt, swivel and height adjustment and also has an integrated quarter inch tripod mount for mounting webcams or lights. ASUS claims a mere 27 Watt power usage for the VG34VQL3A, which almost sounds too good to be true. The VG34VQL3A is expected to launch sometime later this quarter.

On the other hand, several consumer brands saw quarterly growth in their shipments in the first quarter, primarily due to channels replenishing their inventories in March. Among these brands, AOC/Philips stood out, benefiting greatly from demand in the Chinese consumer market. Their shipments not only grew 10.9% QoQ but also increased 3.3% compared to the first quarter of 2022.

RICOH Launches Portable 15.6-inch OLED Displays

PFU America, Inc., the U.S.-based subsidiary of PFU Limited and the leader in digital transformation solutions, today announced the launch of the RICOH Portable Monitor Series. Designed as an easily accessible, portable extra screen for enhanced creative collaboration, the new RICOH monitors feature vivid picture quality, a touch screen for drawing and writing, and the option of wired or wireless connectivity.

The RICOH Portable Monitor Series is available in two versions - a 150 wired model and the battery-powered 150BW wireless model. Both monitors feature a 15.6" OLED display with exceptional image quality, including better contrast, higher brightness and rapid response time. Built for portability, two USB-C inputs near the center of the device enable easy connectivity to video display, or so that two devices connected wirelessly, such as a PC and a smartphone, can be connected at the same time, enabling switching between displays at the touch of a button. An integrated stand, cable management, and two integrated speakers make it easy to set up and manage power, input, and speaker controls.

LG Sneaks Out Two 4K UltraGear Gaming Monitors

LG is something of an expert when it comes to silently launching new monitors and although its latest additions to its UltraGear range of gaming monitors are only minor variants of already existing products, it appears that we're looking at a pair of more affordable models. The 27GR93U-B and 32GR93U-B as the new models are called, measure 27 and 32-inches respectively and both offer 4K resolution and a 144 Hz refresh rate. Comparing the 27GR93U-B to the 27GN950-B, the first really obvious difference is the use of a standard IPS panel instead of a Nano IPS panel and this leads to a slight reduction in the DCI-P3 colour gamut from 98 to 95 percent.

The new models are only certified for FreeSync Premium, rather than FreeSync Premium Pro, but that appears to be the only obvious reduction in gaming features, as G-Sync compatible support, VRR, Black Stabilizer, Dynamic Action Sync, Crosshairs and the FPS counter are all present and accounted for. Both displays have two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 and one upstreams and two downstreams USB 3.0 ports, as well as a 4-pole 3.5 mm jack for a headset. On the plus side, these new models have slightly lower power consumption, with a typical power consumption of about 50 W for the 27-inch model and 65 W for the 32-inch model. The stand still supports tilt, height and pivot adjustment. No official pricing was announced, but we found the 27-inch model listed in Hong Kong for the equivalent of around US$560, which is around US$200 less than what the 27GN950-B retails for.

DNP Announces New Type of LCD Backlight that Offers High Luminance and Wide Viewing Angles

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. has newly designed the system components used with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) module backlights, such as those used in notebook computers. Compared with the design of currently available standard components, the newly designed system components are not only thin, but also achieve high luminance and wide viewing angles.

These components are mainly composed of a Light Guide Plate (LGP), a reflector, and a prism that refracts light. DNP has improved brightness by adjusting the prism arrangement (the convex portion of the triangle). Also, in answer to the challenge of narrow viewing angles due to the positioning of the prism, we improved light utilization efficiency by devising an LGP and a reflector. We then achieved both high luminance and a wide viewing angle by optimizing the prism shape design. Offering these newly designed system components makes it possible to both cut parts numbers and reduce power consumption, as well as contribute to reducing the environmental burden via lower CO2 emissions. We have also achieved a thinner product.

Dell Launches UltraSharp U3224KB 6K Monitor

Dell first unveiled its UltraSharp U3224KB 6K monitor back in early January at the CES 2023 trade show - this professional-grade 31.5-inch screen boasts Thunderbolt 4 connectivity and sports an impressive IPS Black panel (courtesy of LG Display) capable of displaying a super dense 6144 x 3456 pixel resolution. Today the North American technology company has announced that its U3224KB model is available to purchase at a price of $3,199 (CA $4,289.99).

The UltraSharp's competitive pricing undercuts the nearest competition by $1000 - Apple's Pro Display XDR is marginally better in terms of specifications, but potential buyers will get landed with a $5000 bill for the privilege of owning it. Dell is hoping that a bunch of handy features on its offering - including an in-built KVM, 4K HDR webcam, plenty of type USB-C & A ports, a Thunderbolt 4 port and dual 14 W speakers - will be enough to steal some professional clients from Team Cupertino.

Philips Launches 1440p Monitor with Integrated E Ink Display

We've seen all kinds of devices integrate E Ink technology over the years, ranging from USB flash drives to keyboards and of course eReaders. However, Philips decided it was a good idea to stick one next to a 1440p display in its forgetably named 24B1D5600 monitor. The 23.8-inch 2560 x 1440 monitor has the E Ink display attached to its right side and the E Ink display is attached on hinges and can be angled up to 45 degrees towards the main display. The E Ink display measures 13.3-inches and has a resolution of 1200 x 1600 pixels.

Although originally revealed at CES 2022, it seems to have taken Philips quite a while to bring it to market, although it appears to have been on sale in Asia for at least a couple of months by now. The main display features an IPS panel with a 75 Hz refresh rate and a brightness that tops up at a mere 250 cd/m². It has a typical IPS contrast ratio of 1000:1 and a grey to grey response time of 4 ms. However, it also doubles as a docking station for a notebook, as it has a USB-C input that supports USB PD 3.0 up to 90 W and it has a built-in Gigabit Ethernet port. It also sports a DP 1.2 input and a four port USB Type-A hub, plus an audio output. One quirky thing is that the E Ink display requires its own input which is via a USB-C port that supports DP Alt mode and that is capable of outputting 15 W of power to an attached device. The 24B1D5600 retails for around US$620 in Asia.

Acer today announced the latest addition to its lineup of powerful gaming desktops, the Predator Orion X. The space capsule-inspired design was crafted with multiple "zones" to house the CPU, GPU and liquid cooling system, an impressive feat for a desktop of this size. The upgradeable gaming PC also comes with a removable magnetic front cover and metal side panels to protect the vital internals and a mechanical arm-like headset cradle at the top.

Acer also announced new additions to its range of curved screens with the Nitro XZ452CU V and Predator X34 V gaming monitors. InnoLux Goes Fast and Large with 4K 240 Hz 50-inch Gaming Monitor Panel

There's no shortage of large gaming monitors on the market, but to date, almost all of them have been stuck at the same 120 Hz refresh rate as you'd see on higher-end TVs. InnoLux had a new 50-inch panel on display at Touch Taiwan that's capable of 240 Hz refresh rate, something that is still quite rare in this segment, especially as it's a 4K display panel. In all fairness, it's a TV by all intents, just without a tuner and it might appeal to console gamers, but it's not all good news.

InnoLux went with a-si NPVA technology for the panel, in other words, this is a modern VA panel, with the potential ghosting issues that VA panels suffer from. On the other hand, InnoLux claims support for FreeSync Premium Pro support with a VRR range from 48 to 240 Hz. The panel also has a contrast ratio of 7000:1, but no brightness details were given. That said, FreeSync Premium Pro requires HDR support, although it doesn't specify what kind of HDR, but it means the panel will at least support 400 cd/m² in HDR mode. It's also said to support 96 percent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, suggesting good colour reproduction and it's said to have a 2 ms grey to grey response time.

AUO Shows Off 4K 240 Hz A.R.T Gaming Monitor Display Panel

AUO has been busy developing what the company calls Advanced Reflectionless Technology or A.R.T. which the company was showing off at the Touch Taiwan trade show. The panel in question was a 32-inch, 4K AHVA panel, which is AUO's own variant of IPS. Although the panel was set up so there were fewer reflections in the area where it was being displayed, the panel did seem to be less reflective compared to other displays sitting next to it. However, it's always hard to judge these things on a show floor, so we'll have to wait for some reviews before passing final judgement on A.R.T. but it looks like a promising technology when it comes to reducing unwanted reflections.

The panel is also one of the first 4K panels capable of delivering a 240 Hz refresh rate, although it's going to be hard finding a graphics card capable of driving all games at that kind of refresh rate at 4K resolution. Sadly the brightness is only 400 cd/m², although AUO claims 1 ms grey to grey response time with overdrive enabled and a 95 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, which is better than most 4K gaming panels on the market today. Sadly, AHVA panels suffer from IPS glow, just as normal IPS panels, which can clearly be seen in the second image below.

The ViewSonic OMNI VX2428, VX2728J, and VX2728J-2K monitors feature an ultra-fast 0.5 ms response time (MPRT) for super smooth images that minimize motion blur and ghosting. All three monitors come with flexible connectivity options including HDMI, DisplayPort 1.4, and audio-out.

Shipments of Gaming Monitors Fell to 19.8 Million Units in 2022, Expected to Recover in 2023

TrendForce's latest research revealed that shipments of gaming monitors have seen their first decline since 2016 due to high inflation, resulting in only 19.8 million units being shipped in 2022 for a 13% YoY decline. TrendForce predicts that demand should recover in 2023 however, jumping back up to 20.8 million units—an increase of 5% YoY. This recovery will mostly be driven by three factors: First, a number of brands are replacing their 75 Hz models with 100 Hz models. Second, the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games is scheduled to take place in the third quarter, where Esports is set to be one of the competing categories. This will help drive up demand for gaming products. Lastly, China has finally begun lifting COVID restrictions, which means demand for Internet cafes should gradually recover.

TrendForce reveals that vertical alignment (VA) LCD monitors took the lion's share of the market in 2022 at 51%. This was followed by in-plane switching (IPS) LCD monitors at 43.4%, and finally twisted nematic (TN) LCD monitors accounted for 5%. However, it's worth noting that OLED gaming monitors have grown in popularity, taking 0.6% of the market share in 2022. Thanks to the diversification of OLED products, that market share is expected to grow to 1.6% in 2023. Furthermore, TrendForce predicts that IPS monitors may begin competing with VA monitors given that not only are IPS products increasing their market share but many IPS gaming monitors are seeing a continuous price reduction.
