Honestly, while I could try to raise the vcore via pencil-style mods, I don't think I really have the thermal runway to deal with more voltage. The new board I ordered has voltage controls in the BIOS, so I'll be able to try it then and see how hot it gets.

Ah yes, the core 2 days. Back then, i was as well set on getting a core 2 quad Q6600.

But do to some things like back then, a completely pc Hatting dad. That was a complete bust. I had to wait to replace the awful slow amd athlon xp 1500+ single core cpu, til i moved out from home. So i ended up with a i7 920 as my first cpu owned completely by my self. But as we know, i7 920 was also a dam great cpu and the platform was glorious.

Okay, the board I ordered was DOA. A non-responsive seller and a refund later (thanks, ebay!) I ordered a different board. It was even cheaper at $26, so that's good. It is a Gigabyte G41MT-ES2L. It arrived a couple of days ago and I got around to set it up. So now I have a PCIe x16 slot.

A quick Windows 10 IoT LTSC install later, and some playing with BIOS settings (for a G41 board, it actually has quite a few!) I settled on a 1.2vcore at 3Ghz and 300FSB (300x10). This is far less than the chip can do, but this is a significant drop in voltage from the stock voltage (It runs at 1.35v at stock) which makes the system run much cooler while the 300Mhz FSB allows running the memory a bit faster at the 4x multiplier the board has. I am now also using my very first DDR3 sticks in this build, so that's fun. I bought them with my i7 920 system as a 3x4GB kit from Corsair, but one of the sticks died over the years, leaving me with 8GB left.

System is surprisingly usable for a dual core that is approaching 20 years from launch. I think I am going to setup some retro games here.

Bonus benchmarks. Absolute LOL at the "Legendary" score rating - No one else has this hardware combo.

It's begging for more overclocking. I remember having an E6400 @ 3.4GHz back back in the day.

I'd love to. I just don't have any thermal headroom left in this hotbox of a case and it doesn't want to be stable at any higher than 3Ghz with 1.2v on the cores. I'll need more voltage, and it just overheats and starts throttling under any sustained load - And mind you, for this thing, a Windows 10 update is a sustained load!

Not bad. I have a ES2L but I'm not sure it works. Have two S2P's though. One is on my server with the Q9505 and the other is disassembled with an E8600 CPU (fastest C2D model). Wonder how it stacks with the X6800?

Mops the floor with it.
The 50% increased L2 does magic indeed when you start to have a higher-clocked C2D. Though I remember that my old E6400 @ 3.4GHz was still a decent performer with its 2MB L2 :)

If you push that E8600 hard enough it will have the same grunt as a stock Q6600 :D

Would be one hella interesting comparison with a platform which overclocks far enough.

To be honest, I haven't even tried my E8x00 much, I'm not that much into LGA775 anymore. It's now X58 and Sandy which are my favourite older platforms. ;)

I did make the comparison with my Rampage Formula. She was stable at 553*8.5 daily with the E8600 ES, My best Q6600 got traded for a 965XE ES :D

I have to admit that a 2c/4t Netburst would be an interesting one to try out :)

My buddy had a Northwood 3.0, it ripped pretty good. I think he got 3.8 out of it with his sucky cooling choice. Not all load stable though..
