passthrough: sound card does nothing. Unmodified data goes through. Be it 2 channel, or compressed multichannel (dolby digital, DTS, etc)

Decoding: takes digital signal such as those above, and changes it to analogue streams for analogue speakers (5.1 over 3x 3.5mm stereo jacks, for example)

Encoding: takes analogue stream (such as 5.1 from a game) and converts it to a compressed signal, so that a decoder down the line can decode it. This is the only way to get surround sound with positional audio from games, over a digital audio connection.

and thats why people buy auzentech cards, and asus xonar. They have dolby digital and DTS encoding, so we get our games in 5.1 digital awesomeness.

Just modded Vista and XP versions of Realtek R2.17 drivers, uploading now.

I was just wondering if its possible to also MOD the ATI HDMI Audio (Realtek 7.1 codec) built inside the Radeon HD 4800 series of graphics cards which we access via HDMI. This is what I use when I am gaming on my 46" big screen via HDMI.

I beleive it's the same codec found on motherboards and it does sound really good.

Uhh, yes you do....

Have my 4870X2 HDMI to my Sony DA3300ES receiver then to my Sony KDS-55A3000. I get 5.1 on all my games that are multi channel. Switch to onboard audio and 2-channel, yay..

How is that possible? I get full 5.1 and 7.1 audio with my ATI HDMI audio which connects to my Onkyo Hi Def Digital Receiver. You have to set it up for 5.1 or 7.1 in the audio options which I have and set it to Studio Quality. I test it and I can hear it loud and clear. Not sure how many games support 5.1 but there are many. I believe L4D is 7.1 and I can hear all the 7.1 sound effects perfectly.

its 3d sound back, it lets you get older games and apps, and even some not so old ones to give you full 3d sound insted of 2ch sound.

I'm surprised to hear that.

As far as i am aware, HDMI is standard digital audio. that means its 2 channel unless an encoded stream is provided - that means the windows tests will work on all channels, and movies will - but games are stereo upmixed.

Not sure what games you have to test it with, but you can usally tell its working when cinematic voices only come out of the center speaker, and no others. Supreme commander is a good one too, as mouse-overs in the menu makes a beeping noise that can only be heard out the center speaker.

Now it IS possible these soundcards have an encoder... in which case thats awesome. my radeon 3200 onboard doesnt, but its an older 5.1 only model. Please test it and let me know!

Yes, but by setting that you're sending a 7.1 signal to the soundcard, which drops it to 2.0 channel PCM stereo, which then goes to your receiver which is probably upmixing.

For example, my Z-5500's only suport three standards. Dolby digital, DTS, and PCM. PCM is stereo only. What signal does your receiver say its getting?
This whole situation is WHY people buy sound cards with real time encoding, to get 5.1 in games on digital audio.

L4D having 5.1 and 7.1 is a big part of the game to determine where your enemy is. All HD 4800 series sound cards support full 7.1 audio. My onboard also supports 7.1 audio and my Steel Series USB 3H earphones also support up to 8 channels.

Now when I am playing L4D both my onboard sound via my Logitech speakers and my Steel Series earphones I get 7.1 audio no problem.

When I use my ATI HDMI Audio hooked up via HDMI to my Onkyo and from my Onkyo to my 46" HDTV I get full 7.1 audio. I can tell when playing L4D because of the way the speakers sound. You can test it my moving your character around and around while listening to your comrades talking and/or zombies making noises.

I cant actually run HDMI audio. My 4870's didnt come with the damned HDMI adaptor i need to use it. All i know for fact (and tested personally) is how SPDIF works over optical and coax, and i have read that HDMI audio works the same. Its DEFINATELY possible that ATI threw an encoder in there, and if they have thats awesome! i just wanted to make sure you knew for sure, and werent getting confused by upmixing.

I will check but for now I have it hooked upto my HDTV directly and optical to my Onkyo because I needed the HDMI out from my Onkyo for another DVD up-convert player.

It says Multi-Channel and/or LPCM. But I think the HD 4800 does not bitstream. I will have to check one day.

"bitstream" isnt a feature or setting. bitstream is literally just data moving. Its... a very generic term, and not related to anything we're talking about.

No, the 4800 series actually output Multi-Channel LPCM. Older ATI cards like 3800 Only send out 2-channel PCM, although it might be Lossless PCM. Not sure on that part. No need for upmixing, and no need for ProLogic II or etc. Pretty damn slick. Not even Nvidia's cards can do this as you have to send signal from onboard audio over spdif to video card so you are limited to Dolby Digital or DTS and 2-channel PCM only. Another nice thing is my audio doesn't cut in and out like my X-fi with Dolby Digital Live Pack.
