So they put a 5970 on a custom PCM and call it "Ares". The Mars took some engineering work to get around thermals, this....

Though, after having my 4870x2 I don't think I want to go that route again in the future if possible. I'd rather have two separate cards now.

I still prefer 1 single card and to be honest, i don't really see the need for 2 x 5870s.
1 plays all games on highest detail already.

So this becomed the 4xx discussion :)
I strongly believe Nvidia will outperform ati. At the latest news the yelds of nvidia were produced with 2% production, instead of ati 10%. Remarkable and i am perfecly sure they will cost terribly more than ati! :(

I don't think there will be too many surprises all up, to be honest.
As is usually the case (same with CPUs, et al), some applications will favour one over the other. So, nVidia will be better in some things, ATI will be better in others. In the end, it simply depends on what you want from your product which dictates what you will end up using.
Of course, you can always run both camps in the same machine ;)

I lol'd at nearly all of Mailmans recent posts in this thread...

Question - Anyone think nVidia will release some Fermi cards based on PCIeX 3.0? And if so, would such cards work on a 2.0 motherboard?

PCI-E 3.0 cards will work on 2.0 and probably 1.1. I doubt they will release them on 3.0. I'd like to be wrong though.

Same - I'd like to see some cards based on 3.0.

What memory will Fermi be running? GDDR3/5/?
I cant wait to see what EVGA have up thier sleeves. Usually they seem to release a lot of non-reference designs. I'd like to see some non-ref 4GB cards... Fermis going to be expensive anyway (I predict) so it would be nice to see some crazy OTT cards.

Oh... another question.
Do you think 4way SLI will be availible on the reference cards?
I dont see why not... theres lots of boards being released that are capable of it, and I think its poor that EVGA are the only partner who have designed cards for 4way SLI so far.

Pci-e 3 will be a great addition to the next generation of cards - does 890fx have it?

PCI-E 3.0 spec http://www.pcisig.com/news_room/faqs/pcie3.0_faq/

should meant that with the new standard @ x8 link will have the bandwidth of todays x16 right? will be good for >2 card setups :)

No, 890FX does not have PCI-E 3.0.

that's why u check out my post :D

i just meant that my post after his actually compared the HD 5970 and MARS to the GTX 295 for i think the quickest/accurate comparison showing the HD 5970 is actually the best card out. that's all lol

it did fail, I think they are skipping the G300 series for fermi types because they put 2 rebranded cards in the series so far and want to avoid confusion

Looks like a bunch of made up stuff to me! At least that poor site is getting some traffic. Post rumor as news and viola! You have a website!

*After checking the source, it's most likely all made up, and based off of whatever rumors we've already heard. Tis would be great if this was all true. Faster than 5970 and cheaper? Yeah, right.

The Nvidia 470 and 480 have 512 CUDA cores shader units, a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, and DirectX 11 compliance. http://techpowerup.com/114342/NVIDI...Accelerators_are_GeForce_GTX_480_and_470.html

Considering the practical and accepted practices in separation of SKU, binned GPU and Nvidia practices the 470 SKU will have lower clocked GPU, lower clocked GDDR5 and less GDDR5 than 480 SKU. It is interesting to note that Nvidia didn't go with 460 as in relation to previous naming practices e.g 260 because of higher quality, higher specs and improved performance then preliminary 360 - 448 CUDA cores shader units. ;)

i'm betting the 57XX series and lower will be competition to w/e the GTX 3XX series will be, supposedly GT200 shrunk GPU's? as the G 310 or w/e is from the 200 series.

huh what do u mean???
u can't compare a 57xx series with a old dx10 gtx 280 (240 cuda cores) model
New fermi comes with 512 cores.....with GDDR5 mem+dx11

Well at 1st there was only the 5870 then 5850 then 5770 and 5750, supposedly Nvidia will do the same. 480 and 470 1st then lower models in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

HD5870+GTX285 > GTX285+GTX285 in PhysX

The GTX 480 better beat this, or it's egg on nvidia's face...

HD5870 + GTX 285 PhysX performance review

You can see why nvidia don't want PhysX acceleration with ATI cards.
