crazyeyesreaper: can you please comment your vote? It seems you are the only one that got damages by just unlocking shaders...

I think Crazyeyesreaper voted like that, because he bought two HD6970 before we found the way to unlock HD6950.

Crazyeyesreaper, are you are jealous somehow?

You cannot know what are the voltage of a 6950 flashed with a 6950 bios, once again DIFFERENT PCB

its a reference design so all 6950 voltages should be the same, those voltages levels were taken direct from the stock bios for those cards 6950 and 6970

And he may have been right in buying them if people are now suffering damage to their cards from the unlocking. This unlock may never be made stable even if you lower the clocks and voltages and I'm sure the video card makers will be on the lookout for cards coming in for warranty exchange for signs of having been modded so who'll be laughing when all your warranty claims are rejected and you have to buy new cards? Just something to think about.

I have not found even ONE example with HD6950 modded with only unlocked shader bios to be damaged. So the mod works.

If someone damaged his card it's because he used regular HD6970 bios.

It would be nice to add this line to the poll:
"I've bought HD6970. I'm pissed on all HD6950 modders. I want my money back."

HD6970 have different PCB than HD6950 so 1.175V on HD6970 can be like 1.250V on HD6950. Voltage regulator might be the same but voltages may go thru differend resistors ... something like that.

I'm kinda positive about that.

well i have 2x 6970s thats $140+ that $140 could allow me to buy an entire water cooling kit and if i sold my FRIO even more so :toast: but yea overall im happy but kinda wish id had gone 6950 due to crossfire performance the 6970s arent faster in a $140 sense but overall i paid for it and i got what i paid for so cant complain really now i just have to wait for bulldozer cpus so i can go tri fire

Yep, actually just 1 resitor value changed can result in an heaivly increased/decreased voltage on a VRM.

i thought the PCB's were the same, but various parts on 6950 and 6970 are different.
memory
6pin pcie vs 8pin
various caps and resistors etc..

I doubt crazy is mad about some people flashing their cards and getting issues, when he bought true 6970's and doesn't have to deal with that. I'm assuming he most likely knows someone with an issue.

Sorry for off topic, but I just could not resist :). Idea of new poll:

What Crazyeyesreaper is thinking about modding HD6950?
A. Whaaat?
B. I hate HD6950 modders. I am a proud owner od HD6970.
C. I know at least one person who destroy his HD6950 just by thinking of modding it.

Crazyeyesreaper please don't be mad at me. :toast:

# To ensure maximized performance open Catalyst Control Center, go to the Overdrive tab and set the PowerTune slider to the 20% setting. The "Testing" section of this article has more data on that.

Its now worth to give it to the poll? since you like to see the whole pic.
with shader change only, im not sure is needed....

off topic;

whys everyone keep saying great job wizz like he done it first lol, it was me and pyr0 that where first, fact

There needs to be a " My 6950 Has No Problems " in the Poll

I'm curious to know just how many are in fact working fine.

Mine has no problems, runed lost of benchmarks, played games, but the truth is i cant manage to raise speeds of core or memory by more than 30 mhz,i think voltage raise is needed and i will not do that.

Some people were flaming 6970 owners, saying how they "wasted their money" Funny how those people have completely vanished now....maybe I'll head over to the [H] forums and stalk the guy who said that, to see what he has to say now.... or was it on XS, I forgot...

I remember one doubter saying "I think it's best to wait and see if the cards hold up to this cross flashing" (Btw, this is always a good reason to wait a month before buying anything...you let the early adopters be the guinea pigs), and it looks like his suspicions are correct. The only cards NOT having problems are the ones with shader unlocks only; if the shaders work, you're good to go...

How do I know if the shaders is working after using 6970 bios?

I'm working in IT comany that sales computers and since monday we started to getting cards broken by using HD6970 bios. So it's like a bomb with time clock.

The thing is that cards modified with "unlocked HD6950 bios" just don't come back. People are coming to our shop and looking for HD6950 and saying: "Is my warranty will be still valid if I flash my card to HD6970?"

People! Don't use HD6970 BIOS on HD6950!
Please use modded bios with unlocked shaders on HD6950!

you guys that are having no problems at all, did you use the modded bios which only unlocked shaders with no change to clocks.

So what do you think to go with a 6950 unlocked bios and up gpu voltage with rbe ? Ram timing/voltage doesn't change and we can push the gpu clock higher. But which vid is for 3d in rbe? Vid3 or 4 ???

VID4 @ 1175 should be enough for upto 950 on the core (tested this on 6970 as long as the 6950 cores are not lower binned)

1250>1280 memory with no way to increase mem voltages seems what most are getting.

Err.. so
http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/159
This is moding by using HD6970 bios right?
Anyways, if I did unlock, then flash it back to 6950 within a few hours, do you think it will cause any damage to the card?
