VID3 is for things like when the card jumps in to accelerate video etc.

so 1150 or 1100 on 6950 is for when the core is at 500mhz

VID1 is for when card boots
VID2 is for when the card is in 2D mod (eg desktop)

If its really Vid4 then both Asus smartdoctor and the new MSI Afterburner are giving me the wrong voltage to adjust.
I flashed my Saphire 6950 with modded shaders Asus bios and changed Vid3 to 1200 for Core 900 mhz
Both apps are reporting 1.2 as the core voltage.
By upping this voltage I can further overclock the core, 1250 for 940 mhz, memory @ 1375.
On load it reaches mid sixty degrees because of my fun curve in Afterburner.

ive just had abit of a root around mine and 6950s bios, maybe thats where some of the problems are arrising from VID3 and VID4 seem reversed on 6970 to 6950, unless RBE is reporting wrong.

Sorry, I missed that.

Is 1375 memory speed safe on a 6950 bios ?

crazyeyesreaper: can you please comment your vote? It seems you are the only one that got damages by just unlocking shaders...

I think Crazyeyesreaper voted like that, because he bought two HD6970 before we found the way to unlock HD6950.

Crazyeyesreaper, are you are jealous somehow?

And he may have been right in buying them if people are now suffering damage to their cards from the unlocking. This unlock may never be made stable even if you lower the clocks and voltages and I'm sure the video card makers will be on the lookout for cards coming in for warranty exchange for signs of having been modded so who'll be laughing when all your warranty claims are rejected and you have to buy new cards? Just something to think about.

I doubt crazy is mad about some people flashing their cards and getting issues, when he bought true 6970's and doesn't have to deal with that. I'm assuming he most likely knows someone with an issue.

Sorry for off topic, but I just could not resist :). Idea of new poll:

What Crazyeyesreaper is thinking about modding HD6950?
A. Whaaat?
B. I hate HD6950 modders. I am a proud owner od HD6970.
C. I know at least one person who destroy his HD6950 just by thinking of modding it.

Crazyeyesreaper please don't be mad at me. :toast:

And Crazyeyesreaper doesn't have a 6950 :toast:, and F0d thinks his issue are drivers related.

nah if i had known they would unlock id have gone 6950s more to the point i was drunk posting when i stumbled upon this thread and thought it was asking what would you do to avoid damage when flashing the 6950... thus why i picked just the shaders. This should be a prime example to all that drunk posting is a bad bad idea.

Have a look at this OpneCL memory test.

You need to specify how much memory you have and have ATI Stream SDK installed (since there arent drivers for 6900 Accelerated Parallel Processing). It is actually a stress test and it can burn your card if it is overclocked..

I need to see concrete examples of people who had flashed their 6950s to 6970s and had their card fail before I see this thread as anything else other than fear-mongering.
I have a HIS 6950 running as a 6950 currently. I flashed it but I only ever play black ops atm so I don't need the extra horse power. I do however enjoy the fact that I know that with a flip of a switch (my vga bios switch) I can get more horsepower if I need it.
It would also help to put things into perspective if the poll also had an option like 'Card is running just fine'. just my 2pence

I would rather see pictures of the artifacts for the cards that failed.

works fine for me - even at 6970 mem speeds
im still running it - im on iteration 58 of 5000, it previously passed 50 iterations without any trouble so im trying 5000

i cant test 2gb for some reason i can only test 1gb at a time - is this some kind of opencl limit?

Are you sure you are testing 1 GB AT A TIME AND NOT 2 times 1GB? You cant use the whole card memory if it is your main video card, windows is using some for the desktop and other stuff.

Once again, the 3dMark11 is not an artifact. I have flashing sky on BC2 sometimes but only on spawning screen, it is a known issue and some Catalyst drivers had it on the patch note.

Yes, W1zzard article is dangerous because it uses HD6970 bios.

Yes, you should user regular bios or modifiy method from http://www.techpowerup.com/wizzard/Mod_BIOS_HD_6950.zip

So, errr.. even a few hours using the 6970 bios could permanently damaged my card? How do I check if my card has been damaged? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Anyways, since modding seems quite safe, I guess I will go with modding it to unlock shaders.

Imagine that I was usung HD4850 just 3 months ago. I loved that little card. She was running 780/2200 all the time (2 years) with GPU voltage mod.
I've made memory voltage mod (soldering one) just to check how my memory will go. I've wanted to get 2300 or 2400. I've bumped the memory voltage just by 0,02V from stock. The card was running 2 weeks perfectly at 780/2320. Then she just started to gererate green gots everywhere. First in 3DMark2006, than in some games, than even on desktop. Downlocking it and running at stock voltages did't helped.

That's how I killed my favorite card. Still missing her...

Let it be a lesson for all of you HD6950@HD6970 modders.

It seems like people in this thread are just seeing driver or application bugs that people are seeing on other cards.

Maybe you didn't damaged your card yet. Trust me... when it would be damaged you would see the difference.
Just unlock shaders and your card will be ok. Don't use HD6970 bios.

What I meant was, will a few ours using 6970 cause it to permanent damaged? That's my first question. (All I did using 6970 bios was to benchmark using 3D mark 3 times, 2 times 3D mark 06 and 1 time 3D mark 11)
My 2nd question (how to know my card is damaged) is now answered.
Thanks.

Anyways, so can I assume it's safe to unlock shaders?
And, will it bring any problem, if i oc the clock speed to 840 mhz?
