1 GB Radeon HD 6950 to Cost US $279

Priced point of US $279, AMD's new 1 GB Radeon HD 6950 stands testament to the competitiveness AMD left for itself in the performance segment, a crucial market segment. AMD's Radeon HD 6950 with 1 GB of memory will be launched by partners soon, along with 1 GB Radeon HD 6970. The two will compete with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 560Ti which is slated for 25th of this month.

The new Radeon HD 6950 was able to shed $21 of its price by halving its memory amount. The original 2 GB version sells for an average $300. The 1 GB cards use eight 1 Gbit memory chips over a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. Memory clock speeds and bandwidth remain unchanged. Apart from memory amount, partners will most likely use cost-effective board and cooler designs. Apart from the HD 6950, AMD will also introduce "Turbo" variants of the Radeon HD 6870, which will feature very high GPU core clock speeds.

Trust me ... it will have a matter. I remember when I bought 8800GT with 256 MB every review said, that more than 256MB have no affect on games. Few months later the cards with 512 MB were like 30% faster. Next year every 1GB card was 20% faster than the same chip with 512MB.

If this rumour is correct the 1GB 6970 will be launching at the same price as the 6870 did.

I was being slightly over-dramatic. I'm in for the long-haul with my current rig, so I probably would have still gone for the 2GB version if I'd had the choice. I just wish I'd had the option (and the option of experiencing the price-cuts that may ensue).

That's cheaper than the 6870, it's not often a higher model is cheaper than a lower model, i guess 6870 price drops are coming.

For the 1GB 6970, best price you will get in the UK if you shop around will be closer to £230, more likely though, £250 will be the normal RRP.

If the 560 comes in at £170-£180, then the 6950 will drop to similar......

I admit i was not paying much attention (need more coffee) when i posted as i thought this was about the price of the 1GB 6950, i didn't even think there would be a 1GB 6970.

It seams AMD really wants to have every single price point covered with the 6xx cards, between each model range there is only about £5 to £10 between the most expensive and cheapest of the next model up, the new 1gb cards will make that even less probably with cards crossing in to the price ranges between 2 models, AMD really knows a think or two about fully saturating every price point of the market with their products

If by huge you mean a +/-30fps gain in 4 or so games to make them somewhat playable, then yes, it makes a difference. Then again, not everybody plays all the latest stuff with crossfired cards in a 2560 X 1600 resolution.

But it does make a big difference to eyefinity users (yes i know we are the minority), even with my 1680x1050 monitors it's almost 1.2 million more pixels than 2560x1600 so those running 1920x1080 or higher in eyefinity would likely have multiple cards so it fits perfectly for anyone wanting to see what difference memory capacity has on gaming at a higher.

It depends on the resolution; I always play at 1900x1200 with the highest settings and 4xaa or more (if available) and Stalker CS and Pripyat, Cryostasis, Crysis and other games used to max out my GTX 285 and now with the GTX 480, they use around 1300mb-1450mb of vram. And it will make a difference for those running crossfire; that's why 6970 2Gb in CF scale so good.

and about the 2GB memory argument ... classic example would be 5870 1GB vs. 5870 2GB versions ... there were hardly any differences ... i guess that here too it would be the same ...

most of the games nowadays dont need more than 1GB mem ... yes ... the eyefinity users (and ppl with 1920x1200 res monitors) definitely will benefit from the 2GB mem ... but i think majority out there still game with one monitor ... so i guess this is an awesome move and an awesome product ...

AMD Radeon HD 6950 1GB to launch soon, SEP $279

AMD expect to release their 1GB version of the AMD Radeon HD 6950 in mid-February, at a suggested etail price of $279 (USD)

The new cards will feature half the VRAM of the existing high-end enthusiast parts, but it is not known if they will feature the rumored revision 2 design for the HD 6950. The revised design may block the unlockable SIMD units, as shown here.
