Mozilla's Firefox version number inflation drive continues as it plays catch up with Google Chrome 13 and Internet Explorer 9. Released today, Firefox 6 packs small number of new features, improved font rendering, along with the usual load of security and bug fixes. To begin with, the navigation toolbar got a couple of updates: the address bar now highlights the domain name of the loaded webpage. The site identity box (which displays the favicon, and security status of the loaded webpage), is now "streamlined" with the rest of the address bar.

Firefox 6 supports the latest draft version of WebSockets with a prefixed API. It adds support for EventSource / server-sent events, window.matchMedia. There's an improved web-console to help developers. The browser has better discoverability with Firefox Sync. It starts faster when using Panorama. Again, there's the a load of security and stability fixes.

Stylish isn't compatible with it (so it says, it's likely to just be a version number fart), so I'm back to the default and ugly powder blue look.

Nooooes! My YouTube video strecher isn't compatible with 6.0, so now I gotta go back to the crappy 720x480 box on my 1680x1050 screen.

With the way the global economy is making your saved money loose its value in a bank vault everyday, it only makes sense that inflation would affect web browsers as many other aspects of life, all other forms of software programs will soon follow suit.

Stay tuned for Win 9 to be released 2 months after Win 8 is released, introducing stunning new fonts and background images, only to be followed by Win 10 soon afterwards, rumor has it it'll introduce such revolutionary features such as *gasps* better compatibility with wireless printers, and some welcomed updates to the Windows Defender virus definitions. :twitch:

In other news, Bethesda just announced that TES VI: Return of the Septims will be available on 12/12/2011, as part of an ongoing effort to make your TES experience more enjoyable by reducing release cycles between new installments of these critically acclaimed series. As part of the announcement Bethesda showed 4 stunning screenshots (it'll run on the same engine as the soon to be released TES V: Skyrim) and revealed two new sets of armor and the fact the the entire game will last around 4 hours :D

Firefox 6 aka Firefox 4.2 aka Firefox "Mozilla hate you and your add-on"

Not complaining though, I only ever launch it once in a blue moon, IE 9 got more usage (if only to check compatibility on some sites).

I put it in a spoiler, as to not waste screen space...

:wtf:^ sounds like a spam post^:wtf:

IE9 may be stable, but they still have to patch it every "Patch Tuesday" to fix the security holes and incompatibilities. And, IE9 is a good browser.

Give 'em a break, every piece of software has unseen bugs and security holes that have to be filled (fixed) over time... yes, even the RTMs (or, so-called finished products).

However, to make a open "dont use FF is unstable and got security holes" statement and give no facts to say why, makes the post you made just nonsense.

On topic: I do not like the look of 6 out of the gates... just my own tastes, but I will give it the run through for a while and tweak it some to see how it behaves. I think I will play with 7, later, too.:)

I think they mean FF 4.02 and Chrome 2.1.

It's a bullshit number war. F them all. FF 3.6 for life. They can kiss my ass.

Corporate is ditching FF, now, and will probably just go back to IE. Good job, mozilla (dumb asses).

[lunch was stolen at work, still pissed]

Precisely. As a staunch FF supporter I stuck with it until the version number inflation but now I'm staying with 3.6.18. Either guys at Mozilla get their act back together, a group of developers forks the project and resumes with normal development (perhaps producing decent long-term-supported 4.0.1 alternative), or I'm switching to IE - the browser I was never very comfortable with.

Same story with Thunderbird: they phucked it up with the 3.x release (tabs and other crap that was impossible to turn off, which really doesn't make any sense when reading e-mail). Zero benefits of switching to newer version and plenty of hassle to get it to act at least remotely like the version one has gotten used to.

Last time I used IE, I got a worm within 10 seconds. Think I'll stick with FF no matter what issues come up. Or whatever else comes out that beats FF which isn't M$ created.

My cardinal rule of working online without AV software can all be summed up as "Thou Shalt Not Use Microsoft Apps Online."

I use Opera because it's up to Version 11.5 and therefore should be about twice as good as Mozilla 6 and closer to Chrome 13 in speed :D
I think Chrome 13 would be too fast for me and I won't be able to read the Internetz quick enough.

wouldn't mind all Firefox's versions if they actually tested them, had problems with 3.5, 3.6,4 then started using chrome as now it has all the extensions and add ons I need whilst it actually works and doesn't make me wait or restart it just because there's a new version of the browser or an add on like Firefox does

had to stop using Thunderbird as well as it would always end up refusing to receive emails from an account or two after every update

overall I may go back if mozzila stops releasing new versions just for the numbers and/or decides to make sure they're new versions work before releasing them.

I am not really getting people's fuss about the way Mozilla is going with the version numbers.

Who cares if they are jumping version numbers in integers or going in 0.001 increments! What matters is that the browser is not getting worse!

Whether it's called 3.6.10 or 6.1, it's still performing.

Man FF6 is ugly just as ugly as a tablet OS or the other FF4 / FF5.

If only it could look and function like the last useful / user friendly firefox 2.* and 3.* not this horrible IE9 / win7 / Android tablet crap look. Same reason why I stopped using opera, it's ugly.

At least IE( can be fixed and the menu bar and tabs + status bar can be re-enabled.

Firefox can really take FF6 and FireFox it where the sun don't shine or cloud storage it where the sun don't shine.
Today again was forced without my permission firefox updated to 3.6.20, this is not China, not happy with Firefox. :banghead:

PS> does anyone have links or a list of Firefox replacements that complies with a user friendly firefox2 or firefox 3 look and feel minus the bloatware of anything after firefox3.6.20 ?
