Apple sure knows how to surprise us when it comes to display advancements, be it its retina display on iPhone products, 2560 x 1440 pixels in 27-inch monitors (Apple was first to market with that density), or talk of 2048 x 1536 pixels native resolution with the next generation iPad. This latest news is bound to shock and awe. Apparently, Apple is working with upstream suppliers to develop a retina display for its Macbook Pro products. As early as in Q2 2012, Apple will launch a new Macbook Pro with 2880 x 1800 pixels (that's more pixels than even the costliest of today's 30-inch displays can manage). More importantly, it's a return to the 16:10 aspect ratio. It will achieve this without upscaling display dimensions. Meanwhile, Apple's PC competitors ASUS and Acer plan 1920 x 1080 display notebooks around that time.

I personally don't like Apple, but if they bring a 2880 x 1800 display to a 15" laptop I might be tempted to buy one.

Super-high res and 16:10 - nerdgasmic stuff! :rockout:

I can't wait for Windows laptops to have this and desktop monitors. This will hopefully finally kickstart the trend for better than 1080p desktop monitors that we've been stuck with for too long. Finally, Apple does something that I full agree with. :)

Anyone could make such screen ages ago. It's just that no one could market it but Apple with its die hard fans who buy anything regardless of price. It's a luxury not everyone have. Isn't computer industry just crap sometimes?

I admire Apple for attempting to keep 16:10 alive. I pretty much hate them for everything else though.

Everything else like what? Like pretty much any other company wouldn't do the exact same in their shoes (or worse) with walled gardens and proprietary technologies especially for that stock price and more cash on hand than a Mexican Drug Cartel.

I wonder what brand of card will drive such a beastly resolution. As far as I know, our current AMD/NVIDIA cards only output up to 2560*1600, but maybe this will use some form of beefy LVDS system or something to drive it. I'd hate to see how an HD 6450 performs at that resolution.

okay, I'll look differently into apple if the 15" macbook pro have a resolution like that,
1920x1080 on a 15" is already an eyesore btw,

If your using a 1080p desktop monitor it is your choice to do so, its certainly not due to a lack of options. Ive been gaming for nearly 7 years at 2560*1600 and trust me, as lovely as this new apple display sounds, Im not in the least bit excited about pushing up my pixel count on my desktop - regardless of the monitors physical size. The GPU power to adequately run games at todays native 30 inch monitor display is already a big enough and costly enough challenge.

That being said, I dont game on my phone, pad, pod, or laptop. So by all means, keep pushing upward in that dept.

Apple can do this easily because they can scale the GUI for the much higher pixel density. They've already increased the iPhone's resolution by 4x and all the GUI elements are the same size, so since they control the hardware and software it's no real problem.

I am not a fan of Apple, but the industry has been stuck at 1920x1080 for too long. A 21.5" monitor does 1920x1080, and so does a 27". I do not understand why they cannot decrease the pixel pitch of the 27" to match the pixel pitch in the 21.5" to increase the resolution. Props to Apple for pushing this tech forward. (But I'm still not buying their products. :D

Nice panel tech, but the price will be OTT i'm sure, hopefully someone that builds Windows systems will feel the need to compete..

I would be in PC Heaven if they brought out a 3200:2400 (16:12 ratio) display in 24-27". Now THAT would be a visual delight with near print quality. Meanwhile, a retina display Mac Air would make me buy one. I'm a rez pimp ya know!

Yeah and I'm telling you I am typing on one of the 2560x1440 27" iMacs at work right now and it is a lovely experience. TF2 on this machine rocks.

It wont be made by apple though, maybe samsung or lg. Apple develop stuff, they don't make it themselves. 90% of the parts in the iphone are outsourced.

Wonderful and how do you guys think will you be able to use it if there is no "gpu" in the Apple MBP, the last Apple MBP to have a gpu was the G4 17" with ?? ATI x1600?? something, love it used to play AVP2 on it. :respect:

If only Apple would stop smoking pot on the beach trying to surf in the ocean with their cars as surfboards then they would finally figure out "great idea the retina display needs a video card" or we "Apple" would have another failure laptop that customers hate and is stupid enough to buy. :nutkick:

For God's sake Apple please please put a video card 7950~7990 into your crApples MBP's just like all other laptop makers are doing.

What the hell are you talking about?

Both the 15" and 17" have gpus in them. Try doing a little research before making statements like that.

That said, it's about time somebody is stepping up the pixel density.

Wow, what a biased article. Going from 480x320 to 960x640 on the iPhone is NOT the same as going from 1280x800 to 2880x1800 (!?). You can't just keep quadrupling pixel density with the wave of a magic wand, 2880x1800 is an order of magnitude more pixels than 960x640.

Also this statement is completely false, "2560 x 1440 pixels in 27-inch monitors (Apple was first to market with that density)." Dell U2711 with 2560x1440 resolution, release date 11/30/2009. Cinema display release date 7/27/2010. Over 7 months that Dell was marketing 2560x1440 and Apple gets all the credit?
