computer turns on and off

I m building a computer. Everything except gpu,ssd and hdd is connected. I'm just test firing it. The pc is turning on for 5 sec and then turning off and then again turns on for few seconds and then the cycle continues. The fans and led on the mobo turn on.i would post a video but don't know how to. Nonetheless can anyone help me please.

Yes it is. I was reading that the problem could be the paste. They said the fix was wiping off some paste. Could this work

disconnect all thats not necessary and try to get in the bios, leave only mb, psu, cpu+cooler, gpu, monitor and a kb

Was there some paste pre-applied to the cooler or did you put some yourself? if so which one did you use?, some pastes are conductive which can indeed cause this.

Well my cooler came with a tube. It said to apply the paste first

aren't the stand offs built in the case already. I just screwed In the mobo

You need to go ahead and hook up the GPU so if it can get into the BIOS you can see what settings are in place. I do know some machines won't POST without a GPU installed, some will do as you've described while others will just sit there and do nothing.
Get the GPU installed and try it again to see if that affects it.

Apparently the standoffs are already in the case. I checked a review that says they're 'pre installed' but without looking at it myself I don't know if that means they're all where they should be for his board in particular or not.

Well... don't forget the 4670k has graphics already. Not enough for gaming, but enough to do most other things.

I'd check and make sure everything is seated properly. I've done it myself... trying to figure out why my system won't boot after I did stuff and come to find out it's because a stick of RAM isn't all the way in or something (even though it appears to be just looking at it).

I don't know if this is it but the cpu cord for the psu has a 4+4 pin connector on one end and a eight pin connector on the other end. I have connected the 4+4 pin header on mobo and 8 pin on psu. Is this suppose to go the other way or does it make no difference. My psu is fully modular.

Edit: In the other psu I have which is non modular there is a eight pin cpu connector for the mobo. I'm wondering if that's the problem

Yes, the solid 8 pin should go in the PSU and the 4+4 header in the mobo.

It might be worth trying your other PSU, just in case. I know you're getting a lot of random advice here and are probably getting anxious over the situation, but really it's all we can do at the moment. When you put a computer together for the first time and it doesn't work, the problem could be anywhere.

Yes they are in the case; however, you may need to move, remove or add them depending on the motherboard and type of board.

Basic setup calls for them to be on the "A" positions for an ATX MB and in the "M" positions for MicroATX. The bottom of the case should be stamped with the info.

Your gigabyte z97x gaming 5 is an ATX board, so you would use "A" positions as a reference. You still need to check them for alignment, correct position, and make sure there are not any in a place that they should not be.

How much paste did you apply exactly? You only need a pea sized dot and it should be enough.
Maybe you should try this:
1. Remove everything from the case
2. Put motherboard on the motherboard box it came in.
3. Take off the hyper 212 evo, clear the past with a soft cloth and some alcohol and mount the stock heatsink.
4. try only 1 stick of ram and your hdd.
if it post's great.
From the things you said I think it must be a short connection of some sort and the possible problem might be the psu
This is just my guess and opinion on what you should try.

Bad move. I'm sure that was way too much thermal paste. You've probably got quite a mess to clean up now... and yes, you need to clean all of it, until there is none left. I hope you don't have blobs of paste everywhere to clean up... but if it's not too bad an old credit card would work great to scrape the excess gunk off, and then use some rubbing alcohol and a lint free cloth (coffee filters work for this) to clean up the residue off the heatsink base and processor.

The correct way to apply paste for that heatsink in particular (being a HDT cooler) would be to apply a thin line of paste along each of the heatpipes on the cooler base. Others may present different methods, and I'm not saying they're wrong, but this is the method I use for this cooler type.

-ed If you don't have any more thermal paste and you have to buy some, I recommend ARCTIC COOLING MX-4. It has good thermal performance, easy to apply and clean up, and is not electrically conductive.
