I know we are all skeptical of AMD regarding the performance of Zen, but regardless, this stock is amazing! Was hesitant and taking a risk, but I am glad I decided to get in back when I did! I am a happy camper today! Hopefully this is a sign of great things to come and AMD is on the way back!

Investors seem to be betting on this attempt finding fruit, though. AMD shares have soared more than 14% in the last two session to a four-and-a-half-year high, including an 8.5% jump Friday amid hopes that the company could again prove its status as the comeback kid.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/am...tel-stock-shoots-to-multiyear-high-2016-08-19

In fact, over the past month, current quarter estimates have narrowed from a loss of 6 cents per share to a loss of 3 cents per share, while current year estimates have narrowed from a loss of 39 cents per share to a loss of 32 cents per share. The company currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), which is also a favorable signal.

Here is to hoping this is a continuing trend!

It really does look like a comeback, but definitely a far cry from pre-Phenom times.
Zen looks very promising, though. Even if Cinebench was rigged, Zen shouldn't be much slower than i7-5960x @ stock (which is still quite impressive, given that 5960x still sells for $1000).
If the price is right, and this arch makes it into server segment - our next upgrade will definitely be a dual-ZENpteron.

I'm not a big fan of shares as they self perpetuate and don't reflect the commodity properly. The loss of 'true' currency means we value things on speculation. I'll repeat what I said in other AMD thread, by all means buy shares now but sell them pre-release. The tech ignorant (not at OP) that will buy a tonne of shares will be disappointed that it's not 10x better than Intel and they'll sell up so fast the value will plummet. Even if Zen is as good as we tech nerds think it will be.

I think this surge in stock prices is premature. I suspect other market factors were at play but I haven't been paying attention lately.

They underclocked the 6700K from 3.2 GHz to 3 GHz to compete with a 3 GHz Zen. The possibility is very real that the 3 GHz Zen was binned and the vast majority of Zen 8-core processors will be in the 2 GHz range. AMD always cherry-picks their benchmarks too. It does not paint a pretty picture for Zen. It's no doubt better than Bulldozer and sons but I have very serious doubts it will be able to best Intel's best chips simply because Intel's process tech is vastly superior.

If I have had any money I would have bought shares a few years back. But I didn't have money, I still don't.
Then look into a DRIP - Dividend ReInvestment Plan. I started one years ago with Intel. Many plans let you invest as little as $25 a month which is where I started years ago with Intel, then after the kids moved out, I bumped it up to $50 and it comes right of my bank the day after payday so I never miss it.

These plans let you buy partial shares so if the stock is currently trading at $50/per share, your $25 will get you 1/2 share (well, slightly less because there is usually a small fee). If it is trading at $10, you get 2.5 shares, less a small fee..

There was no way I could afford to shell out a bunch of money up front to make a worthwhile investment in anything. But $25/month is pretty painless, even for those on a very tight budget.

Today, I currently have 533.372097 shares of Intel. And at yesterday's closing of $35.24 per share, that's $18,796.036!:clap::clap: And that was with money I never missed! And the beauty of a DRIP is they pay dividends which automatically result in more shares in your portfolio that pay more dividends. Most pay dividends quarterly. This last May, Intel paid me $136.46 in dividends. Less $5.25 for fees and $131.21 was reinvested giving me almost 4 more shares for free!

The better DRIP managers don't charge any DRIP setup fee. You typically have to own 1 full share in the stock to get started, however. Then after that, you set up a direct deposit/allotment, then sit back watch it grow! Well, hopefully grow.

I know this is about AMD stocks, but generally if AMD stocks do well, so will Intel and the rest of the IC industry will too. Of course that is not always the case. At one point in 2006, AMD was worth $42.70 per share. Today, just $7.62. :( But that's up from $1.78 this time last year! :)

Zen is beating the 6900K.

While that is exciting news, I'm more interested in seeing how their $200-$400 range chips will compare, because face it, how many gamers can afford $1000 CPUs?

My general budgets for CPU and GPU is 300 CAD each. If it goes over that, I can try using gift cards that are given to me by suppliers as a form of rebate. I usually have a 100 dollars gift card saved.

So, I can do 400 CAD in burst mode.

So, nope, I can never afford 1,000 CPU or GPU. Well, not unless I won lottery which I don't play anyway.

Mainstream consumer processors clocked at 2ghz? :wtf: yes cause that would go down well, that would be a worse fail than bulldozer, I think they will be clocked higher than 3ghz personally, AMD know they can't have another failure like BD cause that would be catastrophic, they have to catch up to Intel on a performance level, they were forgiven somewhat with BD but fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you springs to mind.

Funny how people get sayings mixed up. Like when people say "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less" to emphasize that that don't care at all. When saying I could care less you are really saying you do care at least somewhat.

Wouldn't be the first time. Athlons (XP, 64, X2) ran a good GHz below the processors they competed with. It's likely that AMD is clock-for-clock better than Intel but it is also likely Global Foundries can't produce 4 GHz CPUs like Intel can. AMD has to ship what they have because they can't afford delays--just like Bulldozer. Zen will no doubt be the best architecture AMD has ever produced but if Global Foundries can't deliver it on a good process, AMD will not come out on top.

The fact of the matter is that AMD wouldn't have underclocked the Intel processor if it could straight up beat it.

Zen will no doubt be the best architecture AMD has ever produced but if Global Foundries can't deliver it on a good process, AMD will not come out on top.

The fact of the matter is that AMD wouldn't have underclocked the Intel processor if it could straight up beat it.

Guys these processors will not release with the frequencies we saw today. These are pre-engineering samples and these always are lower clocked. AMD still has many months to release and there's a 100% chance they will be able to get higher frequencies as they remove the kinks from manufacturing.

PowerColor said some cards reached 1.6 GHz on the RX 480. What did they launch at? 1330 MHz. None of the AIB partners launched anywhere close to 1.6 GHz.

The fact they couldn't run their own chip at 3.2 GHz...well...'nuff said.

AH, you were going so well, then you George Bushed it in the end. LOL

It's the other way around, "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."

In other words, they're saying it's your own fault for getting fooled a second time the same way. Got to learn to adapt.

The funny thing is that I actually changed it from that but I was rather drunk, no need for the explanation lmao

Funny how people get sayings mixed up. Like when people say "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less"...
Yeah that one I've never understood, because it's so obvious, yet most get it wrong.

Correction, no explanation needed, IF you post sober instead of drunk. LOL

Fooled over and over and over. Polaris is a good example. The fanboys pumping AMD stock claim that Polaris was and is a smashing success, but I see no improvement in the AMD vs Nvidia matchup compared to last generation. Pascal has ~70% higher FPS/W. AMD is absent a flagship. In the low-mid range, Polaris "competes" by having more expensive architecture. Polaris cards are OOS because of poor supply, not high demand. AMD got a small bump in GPU market share earlier this year because of the R9 380 and Fury sales. I don't see anything with Polaris that is pushing that higher, rather it could very well head the other direction.

To all the fanboys, do you understand why AMD lost so much market share to Intel and Nvidia in the last few years? Do their new GPU and CPU designs really put them in a better competitive position? Polaris is the only one we've seen, and the answer is no. It's hard to imagine Zen faring worse than Excavator vs Intel, but where it will actually land is pure speculation. I'm 99% sure that AMD is exaggerating Zen performance, and they are only fudging benchmarks comparing it to Broadwell! Granted Broadwell will still be quite decent a year from now. Probably. Intel might actually get off their asses and give us a significant bump. At any rate based on past hype vs reality, I don't expect any miracles from AMD.
