Well, while I see it as somewhat underhanded they want people to move up to the new platform so they can direct their focus on the new OS. Windows 7 is getting quite old at this point and really needs to start disappearing as we have had 2.5 OS's released since then (I could 8.1 as a half) so we can all move on. Windows 10 does have a few downsides, but so did all the previous OS's. If we spend some time with it and get used to it, we realize all the new features and bonuses we like that are now part of it.

I have been on it ever since it came out, sure I have run into issues before on it but nothing that makes me want to flip my keyboard. Personally I like it.

Still on 7 Pro 64 Myself. Too bad MS doesnt have full aero glass in 10

i don't think most people really that against going with new OS. but most people want "real" upgrade to win 7 and not give us tablet interface because it was the popular trend like MS did with win 8. personally i'm on win 10 right now and i do like it some aspect from win 10 vs win 7. things that already work well doesn't need fixing. and just give us the freedom we use to have. some people choose to get windows because they don't want apple style walled ecosystem. and now MS are heading towards what some of people trying to avoid in the first place.

Windows 10 needs less system resources than 7 and runs smoother on low-end hardware. It also boots way quicker than 7. Windows 7's aero glass looks super dated and has always been horrible from a design perspective view. I mainly use power shell for managing users, groups & group policies, etc. at work though and purely navigate around the OS with keyboard shortcuts. But you could also reach a lot of useful settings and festures via Win Key + X (or right click the start button). I honestly see no reason to go back to Windows 7. Windows 10 also supports the same Windows XP compatibility mode that Windows 7 was using. Basically every software that was working under Windows 7 will also run on Windows 10.

So what keeps you guys from upgrading? Is it really aero glass, is it forced updates or is it privacy concerns?

Issue with Windows 10 for me largely boils down to forced updates from an untrustworthy company. Previous versions of Windows give the user veto power. With Windows 10, Microsoft takes too much control - have experienced it first hand with my Windows 10 laptop updating itself, quietly resetting privacy settings and reinstalling apps I've uninstalled. When it comes to my main PC, that's a red line I can't cross.

Question is the best stategy from here. I'm a busy person, with a 20+ year history with Windows and all the baggage that comes with it - switching my primary OS and everything that sits on top from Windows 7 to Linux is no small thing. It's seeming, if I want to take the easy route and put that off for as long as possible, that a switch to Windows 8 may be the way to go. Never imagined I'd be contemplating that.

From business point of view, there are plenty of reasons not to upgrade. As a small business owner myself, I can see plenty of reasons.

I thought we were talking about personal PCs though.

Software incompatibilities or policies? It's the former for us.

Well, why bother wasting my time when things are working perfectly fine as is? It's working, so I ain't going to change and possibly break things. So, it's software incompatibilities.
So, that's my reason. :D

None of Windows machines on known business internet lines have ever downloaded Windows 10 upgrade as far as I can see. Only machines on residential lines were harassed with Win 10 upgrade menace.

I'm glad me and my colleagues share the same opinion when it comes to progression, and am even more glad that the company actually listens to our advice. Whenever possible we will seek to move away from legacy stuff - be it hardware or software. Eventually it'll become way too much hassle to keep such things running as an administrator and as more and more time passes it'll become harder and harder to actually move away from it (no way of migrating data since support has ended or other ridiculous situtations I've been through). We are currently in the process of rewriting all inhouse software to web applications. This way it doesn't matter what hardware nor what OS we are using. Everyone will be able to access those applications from virtually any device - all the employee needs is a working internet connection. My guess is that this will slowly become the trend and where general development will ultimately (inevitably) be heading to.

For me is the forced updates mainly, followed by the new UI design. I don't mind the privacy concerns but i am staying away from 10 as much as i can.

I would be a good laugh if the majority only buys Skylake in the upcoming years because of this.:D
But much like OS/2, with no chipset drivers it will run worse and worse with every itteration until it's performance is so bad as to be irrelevant.
Is this why Sandy/Ivy Bridge is/was so popular? For the last official XP supported chipset drivers?

While dropping support for a Windows OS is inevitable, I'm surprised it's happening so quickly for Win7. It may not have been as entrenched as XP was, it was certainly beloved especially after what happened with Vista and then with Win8 and Win10. I was expecting Win7 to be dropped sometime closer to 2020, its end year of extended support. Also surprising is that both AMD and Intel are doing this. Maybe Microsoft "convinced" them both not to continue support for its older OS'es.

Windows users complaining about Windows 7 (2009) being legacy too fast, meanwhile OSX 10.8 (2012) is already too old for a lot driver/software. I was doing an internship in a printing factory where the infographic service was running on OSX 10.7. I couldn't even install the driver for my wacom intuos. I think that M$ is being pretty nice, at least you can still get most drivers and software update if you are still on win 7. Custom deskotp users base must be pretty low compared to Laptop/branded pc. So I doubt that this is going to be of any consquence for M$.

The schools/corporations who must be the largest users base on win 7 are using brand pc, and don't really do MB/cpu uppgrade, they rather just buy a lot of brand new computer.

Windows 10 needs less system resources than 7 and runs smoother on low-end hardware.

Um? I deal with this on a daily basis and while they share the same minimum specs windows 7 will run fine on 1ghz/1gb systems not so much on 10. I wish it would install on the tablets over 8/10...

That's the case where I work also. There are around 5,000 PCs over about 90 locations and employees get a Dell with dual core and Windows 7. That's all they really need. Only 3 years ago we started phasing in Win 7 from XP.

Forced updates is a big no go. The UI is second. After hearing on here those having issues with the Anniversary update. Id Rather stick to 7 Until I upgrade anyway. If 7 is supported I still will run 7. 7 certainly did not have the holes that xp did. Bootups are under a minutes time unlike most LCD/LED/PLASMA TVs

I have two unused Skylake boards and two X99 boards. I don't need anything newer at this point and I really like my Win-7 OS.

So, MS can kiss my ass too.

And just in case anyone is curious I actually have an xp rig I use for some very specific things at work that had a 4.5ghz fx in it on 990FX. That setup is full installed all drivers including the AMD one. It scores 1/5th of the scores it does in windows 7 for cpuz, 3dmark etc. So supported or not the old OS's have no fucking clue what to do with the new chips.

The new Control Panel is perfectly fine, they are just transitioning settings from old one to new one, that's why things look a bit funny being in two places.
Your right and Almost all the fuctions are still in the old control panel, this and most other things can be found very easily using the context sensitive explorer panel ie click on my pc in it and you can easily start the full control panel or the cheap new one which doe have some added similar and different features

I only use the "new" Settings to check for updates because it's not in the old Control Panel. Other than that it's always Control Panel for me, same as 7

7 FTW. I had W10 license. Bought it with hard cash, not updated "for free". It is biggest piece of garbage in software history. Except 2 simple terminals all my work applications refused to work.

After few weeks of testing and forcing the issue, I took that freaking USB key put some petrol on it and burned to hell and then smashed with big hammer. Oh I tell you it felt so good to do that! After that I've purchased additional 3 W7 licenses and deployed all. Last time M$ got any money from me.

Intel, AMD and M$ can shove next generation hardware support (5% performance gain/2 years). New X99 workstations will do well for next 8 years or so.

I said first day UEFI was released on the unsuspecting world that we will end with a tool which enforce corporate greed on PC users. That day is already upon us.

Really Microsoft? are you that retarded? there is a reason why over 50% of all PC users use Windows 7, if you dont see it then your only shooting yourself in the foot! Just another reason to move over to Linux.
Of all the things I hate about Microsoft, this is not one of them.
On the Linux side of things, unless you are running a rolling release, you will run into the same problem there. E.g. you'll need Ubuntu 16.04 or later to get Skylake support.

Um? I deal with this on a daily basis and while they share the same minimum specs windows 7 will run fine on 1ghz/1gb systems not so much on 10. I wish it would install on the tablets over 8/10...
I agree. Windows 7 with Aero crap disabled runs so much better than Windows 10. I know because I used them both on the same laptop...

Btw, why do I still need to run Start10 , a 3rd party app, in order to restore the Win 7 Startup button's perfect functionality, not that shitty garbage with the programs listed under A..Z columns???
