AMD did it again: building-up such a tremendous speed on its new products' hype train that the Ryzen 7 1700X, Ryzen 7 1800X, and Ryzen 7 1700 managed to jump straight to first, second, and fourth spots of Amazon's list of best-selling CPUs, respectively, dethroning even Intel's mighty i7 7700K. Granted, it isn't hard for the processors from one or the other manufacturer to quickly jump and wrangle about the spots on retailer's best seller lists - there Are only two manufacturers of consumer-grade, high-performance x86 CPUs. But keep in mind: this is a pre-order we're talking about, with nothing but leaks and marketing maneuvering for consumers to base their purchase on.

Caveats in knowledge on Ryzen's performance and real-world displays of prowess notwithstanding, the promise of 8-core, 16-threaded high-performance chips with a traditional x86 design and a promising SMT approach (at tears-of-joy-inducing price points) have been enough to entice consumers. At least, judging by how some retailers have already run out of stock on the new Ryzen processors. Amazon and Newegg, arguably the two most relevant retailers of PC hardware in volume, have burned through their 1800X stocks already, only three days after the pre-order floodgates were opened.

While AMD plans on shipping one million pieces of Ryzen silicon for launch, it would seem that either demand was underestimated, production isn't at the level it should be, or there was a miscalculation on the needed inventory for such powerhouses as Amazon and Newegg. TigerDirect, NCIX and MicroCenter still carry some Ryzen 1800X stock though, so if you must, by all means, put your hands on a sample of AMD's prodigal son, jump straight to it.

I pre-ordered. 1700X; The way I saw it was I was building a new system on the new AMD 4 platform no matter the case and did not want to pay the retail markups that I personally believe is going to happen after the official launch. Get mine at AMD retail price now and avoid an extra premium later.

This worries me more than anything. Too much hype has hurt AMD in the past. When they hype up a product, then fail to deliver like they've done too many times in the past, it can be a very bad thing.

Don't hold your breath. Before Core 2 Duo, when Intel was consistently pwned by AMD Athlon64/FX/X2, Intel stuck to its price-points for the Pentium D and Pentium Extreme Edition. IIRC, you still had to shell out $999 for the Extreme Edition of that time, even through it was pwned by a $250 Athlon64 X2 model.

Pre-ordering CPUs according to company's performance numbers is like pre-ordering a game according to trailers of the game company

No it's not. I pre-ordered from Microcenter, just to make sure I could get one day 1. But also, on that same day, I will be reading reviews. If the reviews suck, I am going to to this magical thing called...cancel my pre-order.

I guess people are just too fed up with Intel business practice; constant socket changes, horrible TIM, little to non IPC increase. Modern game are getting better at utilizing more than 4 cores CPUs now so I guess with just a little IPC deficit Ryzen also do well in games.

I want to see people´s face when they realize games prefer 4 high clocked cores/IPC.
You think people on this forum aren't already very aware of that? These 8c chips aren't meant specifically for gaming! If the IPC is as good as it looks, then they'll do great for gaming regardless, you just would have spare cores for future or if you do a lot of heavily cpu intensive stuff.

Mine is on pre-order from OCUK, along with a handful of bits to complete a wc loop for it, it's gonna be fun :D

as much as I want to pre-order and knowing prices will jump up a bit due to demand, I would rather wait and see what happens with MB designs, so no sense having a cpu sit around on a shelf.

This worries me more than anything. Too much hype has hurt AMD in the past. When they hype up a product, then fail to deliver like they've done too many times in the past, it can be a very bad thing.

They don't hype anything, they just give you some info about the upcoming products. You can then decide if you believe them or not.

All the hype is created from leaks by users which cannot critically process given data and news sites with clickbait titles.

Still gonna wait for end users benchmark as leaks & official papers are no longer relevant. Here's hoping that unbiased benchmarks will say that Intel really got caught with their pants down. Till then, I'm gonna wait it out.

Yeah & they'll just reimburse the OEM (or retailers?) through back channels, nothing like Intel of old.

me thinks they want to leave some juicy bits out for the next event.
Having an event with old stuff they won't gather a crowd for the less interesting releases and information.
Such as Vega?

I hope that's the reality here, I've put in a pre-order for a 1700 as I need 6 core 12 thread minimum.
If it's way down on IPC I will cancel order.

I wouldn't mind that one bit, it'll just mean that I can get get a better Vega but alas.

And that is my point. Retail channel pricing won't change.
