AMD at its Computex 2017 event announced that you may have to wait a lot longer for the consumer graphics variant of its "Vega" architecture. The Radeon RX Vega, the consumer graphics product based on the architecture, will launch at SIGGRAPH 2017, that's 30th July thru 3rd August. The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, on the other hand, will launch by late-June, 2017. This card has a full-featured "Vega 10" silicon, and will be overpriced. We're not exactly sure who its target audience is, but it could mostly be enthusiasts wanting to try out "Vega" or for software/game-developers to begin optimizing their games for "Vega."

I hope it won't be paper launch. Anyhow the availability is gonna be August~September. Too late, not sure if too little.

Or if you wish to stay on the grounds of sanity: "We sell all our Vega GPUs as Frontier Editions 'cause it's a lot more money and the demand is so high we can't get enough ready for a proper RX launch."

Which sounds a bit more realistyc if we keep the HBM and GPU availability in mind.

Yes, because companies always sit on a bad product so that it looks worse when it's released later /s

This is the same thing people were saying before Ryzen released. Making random assumptions does nothing other than prove you are willing to go on speculation alone.

HBM2 availability should be the only thing they wait for to be able to launch Vega GPUs imho. Terrible for us customers but they cannot surpass this problem.

In addition to HBM availability problems, the RX Vega might have software optimization problems - driver problems. The new features Vega will bring could be hard to get right - and we all know their driver team can barely keep up with the current GPU portfolio. This could also mean that Vega has underperformed in every benchmark show up to date, but until we get independent benchmarks nothing can be said about it's true performance.

In 2018 Vega will be faster than Titan Xp. Just wait for driver updates, it will only get faster and faster. Its magical.

Why HBM2, why? Gddr5x would do just fine and its game ready since q2 2016.

Of course Vega 10 is going to totally destroy any NVidia GP102 card.

Yes give it 5 or 6 years until we are on DX14 and those NVidia cards will be put in their place.:D

This has got to be frustrating for anyone who's been waiting on Vega to decide whether to get that or a Pascal. I think AMD may have bit off more than they could chew with HBM2. I know AMD likes to innovate but how do you tell customers to just keep waiting and waiting and then no guarantee that there will be enough of them produced and they have to wait yet again even after launch?

The worse part about HBM for AMD is they have yet to release a card that really needs it.

The Fiji based cards would have been fine if they had used cheaper GDDR5.

Vega is not going to be fast enough to take advantage of HBM2 and would have been fine on GDDR5X just like the TitanXp uses.

I would not be surprised if the industry totally drops HBM in a few years time and goes for some of the other cheaper options like GDDR6X.

I really hope not. I want them Zen APUs with HBM. :(

C'mon AMD, don't be doing this shit again. This was the exact same reason why I bought GTX 980 back when R9 Fury X was a thing. You said 2H 2017. August is 2 months after the mark and even then, it's questionable if it'll be a hard release or just paper launch and then like 1-2 more months before cards are even obtainable. Not cool.

Availability of HBM2 even after a year of its launch is iffy at best. even nVidia is having problems delivering its HBM based teslas on time.

HBM2 is so vital form AMD VEGA. They cant keep up power consumption with NVIDIA without HBM2.

Man, AMD has some devisive product launches coming up.

Threadripper is really exciting and may bring some really good stuff to the table while Vega struggles to even stay relevant.

So true. The HBM2 thing is hurting them big time. But the way the rx 580s are selling out due to mining it gives them breathing room plus so many major launches coming up such as Threadripper, Zen mobile with vega onboard. AMD can actually afford to wait another 2 months to get HBM2 ramped up. Before it was the GPU devision that was keeping them afloat but they are really nailing it on the CPU side. Looks like PC builders are finally coming around as well, and ZEN APU looks like it will really drive into intel's 2in1 sales.

Something is not right with VEGA. You could even hear the stress in her voice when she made that lame 1 min VEGA presentation. Raja said that Computex would unveil more about VEGA for gamers and what we learned is that you have to have dual VEGA to run 4K. NOTHING ELSE.

VEGA is now officially dead in the water, Computex just showed us that VEGA will be to little to late.

nVidia is going to crush the VEGA release with VOLTA GV104 in august. nVidia does not have to wait for GDDR6, they will just use the fastest GDDR5X in august and make a refresh to GDDR6 in 2018 Q1

Im calling it. Vega is probably outdated before its even out. At this rate it'll be too close to Nvidia's Volta launch.

Considering they still have a lack of cash, it seems they are putting all their eggs into the CPU market at the moment. What working Vega silicon they have, is going to be sold in the low yield high margin professional market. Sucks for consumers that only go AMD, but there are plenty of fast and efficient cards out there for everyone else to play with already.

Mobile is where Vega is badly needed (now that nVidia came with brilliant idea of first skipping M chips altogether and then coming with M chips but named "Q-Max", with merely 10-20% less power consumption but huge premium).

Ryzen + Vega APUs have great potential, that H2 2017 can't come soon enough.
