Got pissed off with the noisy little fan on my 9800SE video card last night so I pulled it off and spent ages making an old Thermaltake Golden Orb slot 1 cooler fit instead. Finally got it on and it works sweet and looks pretty cool too. Then I got kinda proud of myself (I've never modded anything in my computer before) and decided I had to share it with someone. So here you go.

I wouldn't know, I don't know how to check it. I just did it for the noise really; the stock fan was a heap of crap. Had considered buying some flash Zalman cooler, but this looks better and is waaaay cheaper (got it for $3 at a junk shop). Kind of miffed that I scratched it it the process. Better get some gold touch up paint I suppose! And it's a big bastard and it blocks 2 PCI slots.

You mean flat against the chip? I think it is. The base of the cooler overlaps a little bit with the square part on the board around the chip (what's that bit for anyway?) because I couldn't sit it on there square, that's because if I had it would be too low and hit the PCI slots when installed. I think the chip is on the same height as that anyway, though I had considered grinding the base of the cooler off a bit to make sure it didn't touch. It works anyway, so that's good enough for me at this stage. I'm not OCing it (yet).

Yeah thats what i meant, give the base a nice lap as well so you get the best performance out of it.

Dude! First, I must say that is really cool. I'm glad you decided to share. :toast:

Second, Lapping is the art of finishing off the contact surface of the heatsink by smoothly sanding it. You use finer and finer grits until you get a mirror finish. The smoothness can increase the performance of your heatsink. Some people also lap their CPU, if of course it has an IHS (Integrated Heat Sink).

Finally, a question. I'm sure we've all heard of dual-slot heatsinks before, but what should we call that? Triple-slot maybe? :D

do NOT lap your gpu chip. it's bare silicon, no heatspreader

Haha, yeah Triple-Slot indeed. But who cares, because I've got 5 PCI slots and only using one of them! As for lapping, thanks for the explanation, maybe next time! hmmmm...

So anyway, here's what it looks like installed:

Very nice mod. Looks nice, and I guess it really cut down fan noise. Small fans are always noisy little buggers.

Well actually, it's not that quiet, but it's just the whooshing air sound I hear now, where the old fan made a horrible whirring noise.

I was thinking of hooking it up through the Fanmate controller on my Zalman CPU cooler. I imagine it wouldn't hurt it. Any thoughts, anyone?

The fanmate should work fine, as long as the fan has the proper pin-connection. Otherwise, prepare to solder wires to make the contacts. I have used a fanmate before for a similar application. It works great.

Well, I did it, now both GPU and CPU fans running off same Fanmate controller. It works brilliantly! Now with the Golden Orb running at 1/2 speed it's no louder than the Zalman on the CPU and the noisiest thing in there is now the PSU fan. Stoked.

Oh, in other news, I left some lamb chops on the kitchen bench that I was gonna stew up for dinner, and the fucking neighbours' cat came in and ate two of them the motherfucker!

bad kitty!

excellent mod - i remember people doing things like this in years gone by (socket 370/478 coolers on their video cards) - back then it was the equivalent of people using LN2 now.

Havent seen this kinda thing in years tho however, great work! just make sure it wont fall off on you and break something.

:toast: Very nice and professional.

In the first picture it looks though as if the card wouldn't be entering the slot properly because of the fins of the heat-sink?

Probably just the angle of the photo, since yours is working.

Beats paying for some flash cooler I say, and you end up with something unique. It's on there solid, I'm pretty confident with that. Glad you approve.

You can't check temps on a 9800 series card unless it has the LM63 monitoring chip, which was only found on some 9800XT's, and rarely Pros that used the XT PCB.

EDIT: You know since your memory is in the L shape, you can probably unlock 4 pipelines and flash your card to 9800Pro.
