Intel Core i7-8086K Listed, First 5.00 GHz Processor

Intel is commemorating 40 years of its 8086 processor, the spiritual ancestor of the x86 machine architecture that rules modern computing, with a special edition socket LGA1151 processor, dubbed Core i7-8086K. The chip appears to feature a nominal clock speed of 4.00 GHz, with a maximum Turbo Boost frequency of 5.00 GHz, making it the first mainstream desktop processor from Intel to hit the 5.00 GHz mark, out of the box.

The Core i7-8086K is more likely to be based on a special bin of the 14 nm, 6-core/12-thread "Coffee Lake" silicon, rather than being something next-gen or 8-core. The retail SKU bears the part number "BX80684I78086K." The chip will be compatible with Intel 300-series chipset motherboards. Pre-launch listings put its price around $486, which is along expected lines, as it's 70-100 EUR pricier than the i7-8700K. Intel could unveil the Core i7-8086K at the 2018 Computex (specifically on the 8th of June), alongside the first motherboards based on its Z390 Express chipset.

If we are referring to a turbo of 5Ghz as "a first", that's being a little unfair.
The AMD FX-9590 Vishera was actually spec'd to run at a maximum of 5Ghz.

That said, i'd like one of these 8086K CPUs.

They could have the stock clock (non turbo) be 5ghz, so it could be true. FX-9590 or whatever was 4.8 stock/5ghz turbo.

I thought the 8700K was the First 5.0 Chip from intel?

They meant to reach 5.0 Out of the Box without overclocking, so yeah the FX 9590 is the first, not this not released yet CPU.

Finally something that's a tad better than my archaic 5820K... One would expect them to reach this point faster...

Don't think i'll be updating my 5820K for a few more years.

Next step up is an 8 core model but, it means a big increase in power draw and not much gain in single core speeds.

An OC'd 5820K can still go toe to toe with the top end 6 core models, and it's about four years old now.

For all the trolls whining this was propaganda or AMD was first, read the statement. The important word is "mainstream". The AMD offering was extremely limited quantity and mostly limited to OEM/system integrators. Plus, it lagged 10-30% behind the already available i7-4770K and suffered from epic latency (source).

The 9590 was 5GHz turbo out of the box, although you'd have to place it in a containment reactor of sorts, it was totally mainstream & not 5775c or 8121u kind of LE chip

Imagine if it's not using pigeon poop (Devil's Canyon anyone..) - 5 GHz will be doable with cheap air cooling.

It will work just fine on Z370.
Z390 is what Z370 should have been from the start. Z370 is Z270 basicly..

It's a tribute to a 40-year old CPU that ushered in the PC era. The $500 asking price is nothing, I expect this is worth a lot more to a select few collectors.
