Intel X599 Chipset to Drive 28-core HEDT+ Platform

The introduction of 32-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX at $1,799 has demolished the competitiveness of the similarly priced Core i9-7980XE, forcing Intel to "productize" its Skylake-X XCC (extreme core-count) silicon for the client-segment. We've already seen one or two motherboards for this platform at Computex, notably the ASUS ROG Dominus (pictured below). Intel's demo platform is reportedly powered by a GIGABYTE-made motherboard. Both these boards may have been prototypes based on Intel C629 "Lewisburg" chipset, as Intel was still mulling on whether to even launch the product.

With the 2990WX out, the fate of the client-segment cousin of the Xeon Platinum 8180 is sealed, and so is that of the C629. In its client-segment avatar, the chipset will be branded "Intel X599 Express." This chipset will support new SKUs derived from the "Skylake-X" XCC silicon (probably 24-core, 26-core, and 28-core), in the LGA3647 package. The platform features not just up to 28 cores, but also a 6-channel DDR4 memory interface, which will probably support up to 192 GB of memory on the client-platform. There's also a rumor that Intel could launch new 20-core and 22-core LGA2066 processors. Those, coupled with the 8-core LGA1151 processor, will be Intel's fig-leaf until late-2019.

With 8-channel memory and slightly higher clocks, you get a processor that could be tangibly faster than 2990WX (due to much lesser memory latencies for multi-threaded tasks), to compete with Intel's 28-core.

With 8-channel memory and slightly higher clocks, you get a processor that could be tangibly faster than 2990WX (due to much lesser memory latencies for multi-threaded tasks), to compete with Intel's 28-core.

I have a feeling 8 channel memory is not gonna be the future (without dual CPUs). I feel like they won’t need it with ddr5 coming in 2019-2020.

Well, apparently they will a also make two more CPUs for X299 , a 20 and a 22 core. Guess you can still enjoy a 10% faster CPU compared to your 7980XE if you got one of those, better than nothing.

it will be nice to see that 28 cores in the market but if the cost is double the price from 32core thread ripper will be a no go. If intel wants to have double prices they should have double the performance.

That would need a new core, I doubt XCC fits on the lga2066 socket. But maybe Cascade Lake X has that. Just wondering if x599 supports Apache Pass Dimms, or is that restricted to server side.

Jesus maybe it is time to upgrade my old I7 980X. 6 cores seems like low end now with 32 core amd CPU and 28 core Intel CPU. In de other hand the most demanding i am doing is gaming and for that i have no where need of so many cores.

I will stay on X58 for 2018 at least. But the core wars has for sure started now. In the old day its MHz and GHz that ruled, today it is cores. Things has for sure change a bit since then. But i like the fact that cpu´s finnaly takes on speed and innovation. Cause before amd released threadripper, cpu releases has been rather boring every time.

So now that AMD has threadripper. the 28 core intel part has to be called walletripper

Do they? Many, I mean MANY still play latest games fine with their LGA1366 or LGA1155 CPUs.

Loved that how AMD showed Intel the middle finger by launching the B350 chipset, so Intel had to launch their own budget chipset as B360 insted of the usual Bx50 name.
