A way to set PCIe card to act like apart of the MB

Hi guys,

I know this isn't probably possible but... Is there a way to have a PCIe card "USB 3.0" to have it where it's apart of the MB somehow? For example I had USB HDD connected with a bootable OS BUT the MB didn't show up as being connected but when I plugged it in the USB 2.0 on the MB it showed up. So any chance...? This is off from my 775 build. MB is ASUS P5G41-M LE

"Apart" as in separately? No. PCIe slots are controlled by the motherboard's chipset.

I assume you mean the drive did not show up as connected. Do other devices plugged into that PCIe card show up?

The add in card would need to be bootable, just like SATA RAID cards have that option

Unsure if 775 would be a limit here, i recall some discussions about socket 1366 having some limitations there with regard to NVME add on cards, similar limits could apply to 775

Hmm I create a HDD with Linux and plug via Sata to USB and see what happens

The OS doesn't matter. You're looking for something that needs to take place at the BIOS level, before the OS loads. Sounds like the card that you have requires a driver to work.

Yup bios detection problems, in 2016 my motherboard received an update for nvme

The OS doesn't matter. You're looking for something that needs to take place at the BIOS level, before the OS loads. Sounds like the card that you have requires a driver to work.

This guy needs to go in his bios, read his motherboard manual and look at boot device priority.

hummm, this really has nuthin to do with nvme..... pcie perhaps, but IIRC, usb 3 was not native nor supported by most mobo's as old as the OP's... hell it was tricky even on Z87's. There may be some bios or driver trick to make it work, but I would not hold my breath.....

Well SATA to USB will work because your board supports booting from SATA. It doesn't support booting from PCIe, unless there is some workaround.

Yeah true. I booted windows 10 from a SD Card but in USB 2.0 but it was worth trying to get a answer and I found it

Yes, but that is what the PCIe card if for. To add USB 3 support to the computer. The PCIe interface "should" make the USB side of it invisible the board itself. However, as others have noted, the motherboard must still support booting from the PCIe slot. And that would seem to be the problem.

If me, I would just use the USB 2.0 port or better yet, pull the drive out of the USB case and install the drive inside the PC. An adapter may be necessary but are available - assuming the external drive is not using a proprietary or hardwired connection internally.

it has exactly one thing in common with NVME - both USB3 and NVME are newer than the board, and therefore have no native boot support for them.

My server is still a 775 system. I have several SATA cards and USB 3 cards installed in PCIe slots.

The board will run those devices no problem as long as you can find drivers. The problem is booting from them. The only thing it, or pretty much any 775 system is going to do is boot from one of the native SATA ports. I would say this applies to the OP as well.

If you want to boot from PCI-e on old platforms, use Clover or DUET.
I don't see why you would want go for USB 3.0 boot vs. SATA2 native or actual NVMe/AHCI on PCIe, though...
PS. Booting Windows (not installer only) from removable media, that is the real show stopper here.

Indeed. Few people realize they can even boot nvme on a nonsupported mobo using a bootloader like this. All you need is a usb stick to store the bootloader.

@R-T-B USB is too mainstream for me
I use CompactFlash and IDE adapter instead (because some PCI-e boards, don't support USB booting).

In the past i used a pciex ssd on unsupported boards , easily, on a fresh windows install though, you essentially need an F6 style driver for your device ie drivers for any adapter card or plx chip and the usb drivers and install them at the disk select section , then pick your disk , this worked on 775 Am3 and am4 for me as well as back int day.
But i have to say/admit never tried usb but should be similar.

I dusted off the revox2 for this build but it's re retired now , i had to use win 7 64 bit F6 driver's, worked fine on 10 but i got a stick if gum drive now(nvme)
