New GPU not recognized by the PC

So i have just decided to upgrade my GPU from a GTX 660 to a Sapphire rx 580 nitro 8gb. I have plugged it in (made sure it is not loose) and turned on the PC. The GPU appears to be working (Fans spinning and light turns on) but the monitor which is connected to that GPU gets no input (just a black screen) so i plug in my 2nd monitor into the integrated graphics card and look into device manager to see if the card is recognized, nothing there, i check in the bios, nothing there. The computer just doesn't recognize this card. Before purchase i made to sure to check if the motherboard was compatible with the graphics card and it is. Also my PSU is able to handle it

Motherboard : GIGABYTE ga-z77-d3h

BIOS : Legacy mode (heard UEFI has trouble with newer GPUs)

Everywhere i looked i seem to find more people are running into problems with UEFI and most say to switch to legacy , i could try it but i don’t know if it’s worth the risk

The worst that can happen is you have to switchback to legacy, even if it means removing the card from the system. The card already isn't working, so not much to lose. You might first try setting INIT DISPLAY FIRST to PEG. Should be under PERIPHERALS in the BIOS setup.

Failing that, you don't have another system to try the card in, do you? Just to make sure the card isn't DOA.

580 is uefi there's no reason to be running legacy mode, you heard wrong... make sure you have the 6/8 pin pcie plugged into the gpu and the monitor connected to it and not the onboard if you have one, set init display to pcie/peg. If that still doesn't work reset motherboard bios and see if that works. What model psu have you got?

Check if there's a bios update for your motherboard as well.

The PSU model is SST-ST60F-ESB

600 watts the card requires 500

If i just connect my hdmi’s to the gpu i get black screen

Well, you still haven't tried to run in UEFI mode, so there's that.

The card might also just need reseated. Maybe, for some reason, it's just a bit off somehow and not showing up. Maybe there's crap in the slot interfering with a good connection? Try blowing the slot out with a can of compressed air or something.

Or, test the card in another computer if possible. Might be DOA.

580 is not legacy bios compatible, it will run in compatibility mode on newer uefi boards but not full legacy

Right, as NdMk2o1o said, I suspect the card, contrary to what you've heard, might simply not work in legacy mode.

It's generally older cards that aren't going to work with UEFI. Radeon VII, being an outlier, reportedly was UEFI incompatible, but was fixed with an update.

So I’m you think that it being in legacy is the reason that the card doesn’t show up in device manager or even in the bios ? Although it’s plugged in shouldn’t there be a sign of it being recognised anywhere ?

Radeon 2**/3** had legacy bios switch, since 4** series they are uefi only I'm sure

You still haven't tried it, what's the issue, 580 is uefi only

Don't come asking for help ignoring it, doing your own thing and then question the thing you haven't even tried. It could well be doa but it's a uefi card and you're running a legacy bios

Uefi devices are not recognised by legacy bios so no it won't show in Windows either

Well, to put it bluntly, what NdMk2o1o said. I wouldn't be surprised if running UEFI mode solved all your problems. If it's not even compatible with the legacy BIOS at all, it makes sense it wouldn't show up. Same reason a motherboard released prior to a new CPU might not even boot with the new CPU installed, but could handle it fine after a BIOS update containing support for said CPU. There's just no support.

Just change it to UEFI to see if the 580 is good or defective at least. What's the harm in that?

This was supposed to be a link, not sure what happened, though if you click on it it will still take you to the thread, Gigabyte hybrid uefi bios were notoriously crap buggy so you may well run into some issues though most of it is covered off in the reddit discussion.

So i have just changed from legacy to UEFI and when i have my GPU plugged in the PC powers on to power saving mode with just a black screen , without the gpu (just integrated alone) it powers on normal

Managed to solve that problem , i am able to boot but now I’m back to the original problem where the computer doesn’t recognise the GPU doesn’t show up in bios nor device manager

I guess the next step is to try the 580 in another PC if possible. If you get the same result then are you able to RMA it?

Then it's likely the card, just to be certain you have the 8/6 pin pcie cables plugged into the card yes? Did you once again change init display to peg after the change to uefi? Also do you have another slot to try it? Lastly then do you have access to another pc you can test it in?

The slots are definitely in.?When i change init to peg it automatically changes it back to auto after saving and exit , the only other slot i have is a pci express 3.0 slot and no other machine

Try this. Go to a PC repair store and ask them to check your 580 in one of their PCs to see if it's defective. Usually they will do something simple like this for free because it only takes a minute.

Make sure you dont have onboard graphics hooked to a display. Secondly try another output on the gpu, dvi, hdmi, vga etx.
