I may be wrong for this and I don't care. I treat computers like cars.
If I bought a regular Corvette, I'd then want the Z06 or ZR1. That supercharger needs 1 more psi. Methanol instead of Gasoline, etc.

Nothing wrong with using a PSU much larger than you need. May even be more efficient. Only downsize is the cost and they are larger

That depends on OP's rig. Supposedly efficiency is optimal between 50% - 80% load, as claimed by be quiet! (the PSU manufacturer, not me telling you to shut it...)

Which is why I said "may". Besides efficiency is overrated, we're talking maybe a few dollars a year and maybe less heat.

looks like the PSU costs more than the whole PC.

what's the point?
i run a 10850k that needs 1.4V to maintain 5.1 Ghz (it consumes almost 280W in Cinebench)

and a 3090 gaming x trio maxed out.

on a 750W PSU and i pull like 540W from the wall. while gaming in 4K

Well if money is no object then go with the most expensive and biggest power supply that money can buy. Why stop at 1kw?

I've had the same CPU cooler more than a decade ago, why not turn it 90 degrees so it blows the warm air out to the rear case fan, now it's blowing warm air into your PSU.

Higher efficiency PSU is much more important than it's wattage. You payed for something that you don't need, but could have bought higher quality PSU, that is more efficient for your needs

Higher efficiency = less heat. May possibly extend the life of the PSU well beyond it's warranty. (not guaranteed of coarse).

Titanium & Platinum class here, still going strong after 6 years..(800w+)

Yeah, this is actually very important, I choose a 750w instead of a 1000w for that exact reason, the 1000w one was 80plus bronze and my 750w is 80plus gold.

This. (which is not low quality....wow).

Isn't the HX series a lot older and EOL? Not sure if they have a new version. But yeah, 600W died, buys 1KW for no reason but to waste money... congrats? Not sure what to say here, honestly. Glad you got another PSU and the system is up and running. Next time, if you consider something more appropriately sized for a single GPU and CPU system, you can save some cash, surely.

Edit: Good thing you got it for dirt cheap...but it's still an old arse PSU. Did you get it used for that price?

Nothing wrong with using a PSU much larger than you need. May even be more efficient. Only downsize is the cost and they are larger
Right. You'll never make up the cost of a 1KW PSU versus a 750W of the same brand/efficiency rating. It's just wasting money regardless if it is a couple % more efficient where you run it. ;)

My god this forum has become so toxic that it's hard to believe :shadedshu:

And what's wrong with slightly older components? It was a good PSU then and it still is today...I'm still running a HX850 from that period with no problems.

there should be BALANCE of power and efficiency. it's idiotic to get 500-550W titanium sh*t for system of ~450W load instead of getting 600-650W gold.

no toxicine here. i'd get no-name 500w psu for same 25$, instead of getting DYNOSAUR ERA used psu. if it was ~3 years psu it's ok to get it used, but i think it's used a bit more... :D

Sligthly older? It's a 12 year old PSU that we're all assuming is used. Me? I would have paid 3x what he did for a new 650W unit with similar quality. Remember, the dude created a thread showing off his purchase. Should we all have chimied in offering candy and goodies leaving the elephant in the room? Nobody is being toxic here (though I agree with your overall sentiment this place continues to be toxic) just putting some information out there for future use.

Capacitor aging does not agree with this statement. :p

In 2010, I agree!

Seriously, he'll be ok, it was just a bit curious to see this thread 600W go boom, and then an ancient used 1KW model replaced it.
