Microsoft Account and Internet Connection Mandatory for Windows 11 Home Setup

This is exactly the kind of BS that will "feature drift" over time though. From W10 Home (1903) if you connected to the net (during setup) you had to make an account, so the workaround was to disconnect during setup. Now we see for W11 Home (2021) = no workaround, Internet + account or it won't install. I bet by 2023-2025 we'll see the same thing expanded to Pro / all non-Enterprise, non-Education editions. "Not activated via your organization's KMS server? MS Account compulsory. Period." is exactly where this will end.

I running Linux with Wine and can run all my windows games native just fine all my apps too Office 365 teams for work. Got steam with doom and all my other games running perfect heck even faster than winblows. Microsoft made more money and was much more user friendly when they gave users the choice of what to install. Now there being like apple more and more. Windows 11 the John Deer version OS

can you recommend me a Linux version? Linux Mint a good place to start? which one? cinnamon or xtce? all i do is play games so... keep that in mind for your recommendation

What happens if you do install Windows 10 with an account created just for this purpose, then burn the account?

And some of you just coudn't understand why I hate and refuse to run Win 10.

I saw this coming a long time ago, they've already been doing this with things like Xbox to forcefully tether you to them so they can watch whatever you do. It's true every OS has some form of telemetry but the way MS does it is beyond "Heavy-Handed" and in truth it's intrusive.

To the point I had an Xbox One not too long ago I bought used and when I discovered it was going to force me to sign up for a MS account just to use it, online OR offline, I ditched it. Never really used it at all and it was a very nice looking unit too, had the extra controller, external cooling fan add-on and all else but MS trying to force it's way into my business is just out of bounds so it had to go.

It's the same with my PC, I don't need MS sticking it's nose into absolutely every bit of my biz because I can promise you they will never let you in on their biz so they can just butt-out of mine.
But of course they "Feel" entitled because they are MS and the terms of this are already making anything past Win 7 for me right out.

For those asking about suggestions for Linux, Mint or Peppermint both are fine for a "Very close to Windows" experience but know Mint sometimes has issues with the newer/newest AMD GPU's, it would not run my Radeon VII properly but Peppermint 10 did without complaint.
However since the developer of Peppermint 10 passed away early last year development of PM11 has been slow and some are even saying it may not be. ATM it works fine, using it right now with no issues at all.
Thanks but no thanks MS, I'll once again pass on Windows, probrably forever at this rate.

.................there's always a catch.........................

edit - I can see the EU having a field day with the 'mandatory internet connection'
probably won't fly in Europe

Hi,
Endless loop of create a ms account
Already got a taste earlier with the get more out of windows crapola at login to create or use ms account so more of the same except no getting out of it now lol

No big deal so 21h1 will be the last 10 build thank goodness no more build mounting

ahhhh absolutely not

I guess that's one way to collect an entire planet's worth of fake names and numbers using disposable emails addresses.
The people who refused to make a Microsoft account the last 30 times aren't going to be pursuaded otherwise by this move.

"Windows 11 ... will be offered as a free upgrade for existing Windows 10 users."

upgrade: raise (something) to a higher standard, in particular, improve (equipment or machinery) by adding or replacing components.

So I guess the word upgrade is being used in an ironic sense?

Make one and get back to us ;)

Wow, I guess you're living under a rock still. There's no shortage of ways to generate anonymous credentials for throwaway accounts. How else do you think scammers have it so easy?

So what exactly is the problem here? This is essentially the same as Windows 10 only now with Home they are requiring it so they can build the feature set with some semblance of predictability, ie everyone using it will have access to online account.

Is this an old codger thing conspiracy theorists or what? Do you not use a smart phone, or web browser (if its Chrome you are a fool)? Because if you do I hope you take your security there 10x more seriously as if someone as thats the most common vector for someone gather information from you, also it should probably be an iPhone.

MS is at least doing stuff that is potentially useful with the MS account unlike so many other companies that require you to sign into an account for literally no reason. To my knowledge MS has never been found to be doing anything nefarious with user data so again is this really a big deal or just feel good MS bashing?

I wish they would update Slackware...

Windows 11 Home setup will require you to have a Microsoft account and a working Internet connection handy.
I have the following to say on this matter:
Go FUCK YOURSELVES MICROSOFT!

This is draconian bullshit and will not be tolerated. And that goes for the UEFI, TPM and SecureBoot requirements as well.

(Note to @btarunr, none of that is aimed at you or TPU!)
I'm certain people will find ways around this.
Oh you can bet real money on THAT!
I've made a tweaked Windows 10 ISO for my own personal use that completely skips the OOBE setup and goes straight to the desktop after the initial restart. The local account is premade and even some programs I use regularly are preinstalled.
Nice! I predict there will be a great many utilities pop up to offer such customizations very soon!

Paid for and endorsed by MS?

Hi,
Nope but I guess you just crawled out from under one lol

Guess who is defining what is the higher standard here?

I do not see forcing folks to create an account as being anything of a higher standard except what benefits MS and no one else.
And MS being so "Generous" will make it all too easy to create an account while installing it.

Makes me think of an "MS" spider speaking to the "User" Fly......

That's not true there's an option to for offline setup.

Edit: NVM, only looked at pro setup options

Oh no, we understand you.
Those that didn't before should understand why now.
MS is making a required account with them a literal tether and pushing it deeper and deeper into our daily lives (And elsewhere too).

Won't be me going "Ouchie-Ouchie" during the install.

You don't seem to be very "knowledgable" then...

PopOS is pretty nice. its backed by System76 who build and sell Linux systems. Available in non-Foss with gpu driver installer ready to go.
Single player only for proton/wine games. Anything with anticheat is going to be hit or miss on getting Autobanned. so be careful.

good news. I only play single player games. i gave up on multi many years ago when "subtle hackers" figured out ways around those anticheat systems. so i learned to just stop bothering with multi games.

linux mint beta just came out 3 days ago, a new version... so going to give that a run tonight, might try PoPOS though too, thanks.

i just want whatever makes using steam easiest.
