As the title suggests i picked up some good deals on earlier hardware so i got this X370 Prime Pro board from ASUS for a very reasonable price, i have found it to be rock solid and very reliable - setting RAM timings wrongly can cause a no boot which requires a CMOS reset rather than the old M5A99 days where it would kinda boot into a BIOS safe mode if you held down the power button - it does boot into safe mode at times bit I've found this a little unpredictable as to when it does that.
Anyway i had the Ryzen 3600 happily running a manual overclock of 4.4Ghz (1.37V set droop to 1.34V) with a 2x8GB Crucial kit with the FCLK at 3733Mhz and RAM frequency to match at 3733Mhz also the timings were advertised as 16-18-18-38-58 but i had got them down to 16-18-16-34-54 with tighter sub timings too
Introducing a second kit 0f this RAM stopped my manual overclock working and it seems it was the Memory controller at fault, i tried adding voltage to SOC but it didn't really like it at all - in the end what i had to do was drop the FCLK and MCLK one step down to 1833Mhz each - still technically over the Ryzen sweet spot guarantee of 3600 on the Mem controller - with 1.41V on the RAM im still able to set 16-18-16-36-58 with some tighter sub timings and to be honest the Memory bandwidth and throughput read, write, copy speeds have not changed at all really.
I have turned on the PBO and AMD Overclock at 200MHz and its regularly boosting up to 4.3Ghz which is somewhat less than my 4.4Ghz all core overclock.
Overall if you need 32GB then it can stabilise relatively easier but for gaming there is no improvement to anything other than Capacity. 2x8GB or 2x16GB would definitely be my recommended if you are just gaming and don't need that 32GB of RAM.
