Following the disappointing start of the Intel ARC gpus, what are your thoughts on ARC gpus or the future of ARC gpus?

Who knows what the future will bring from Intel but for now I'm not interested.

Cheap compute with decent API is interesting.

Bad video game performance will only make the market price lower. More GFLOPs for less money is interesting, though it depends on how its "OneAPI" works.

I would say that it's too early to post ARC's obituary. Not a single discrete ARC graphics card has yet shipped to the USA or European markets to my knowledge.

My guess is that Intel will eventually figure this out. It's impossible to say when but they will. No one sane thought that the initial ARC cards would be Ampere or RNDA2 killers.

That said this lackluster debut doesn't place them competitively against this fall's next-gen NVIDIA and AMD architectures. It will take a few years.

The real battle in the upcoming years will be data center/machine learning not PC gaming. Data Center is now NVIDIA's largest business by revenue and growing far faster than their Gaming business (see their financial presentations in the investor relation section of the NVIDIA corporate website). With an expected contraction in gaming it is likely Intel, NVIDIA, and AMD will focus on data center.

Based on processing power GPus can handle it, how well can they handle it depends on software framework.
To be Ampere or RDNA2 killers, they'd need to beat 3090s and 6900s and they won't.

First, I hope that they make good drivers.

I want a third competitor on the market, dammit.

I think they will get better as newer APIs roll and old ones stop being used, it's too early to think of them as a viable competition. I think if they focus on the most popular games and driver stability and make themselves a name for the typical mp gamer of free mobas and shooters it's a good start. AMD and Nvidia are decades of experience ahead.

I think they are stuffed. You can't have products so bad that AIB's stop wanting to produce them. I'm a little sad really as if they were good, I'd have purchased a top-tier one to replace my 1660 Super. But with all the problems, no chance I'm afraid.
Look another Larrabee as I predicted.

I am starting to become more excited about the Fenghua PowerVR-based card than the Arcs, to be honest. They explicitly promise Linux support and it has a nice (very) low TDP, which matter much more to me than being an RTX3060/70/90 or whatever "killer".

Interesting Enough PowerVR/Imagination Technologies was what drove the Sega Dreamcast.

I'd like to see them venture out of the Phone business, and release a Graphics Acceleration Card.

Even if they had better hardware than AMD/Nvidia and I had amnesia about Intel's shady deals, I wouldn't even consider one due to the lack of support for older APIs and games.

As for the future, it will probably get a foothold with OEM sales and there will likely be some niche use cases.

Am I the only one to consider XeSS a really bad idea? Intel should have partnered with AMD to make FSR (2.0) and a unified type of AI core mainstream, to dethrone Nvidia.

Just my $.02.

Sorry for resurrecting a nearly dead thread.
