RTX 4090 owners. Are you getting coil whine?

Must be lucky but no coil whine at 4k 144fps, maybe only a little in the Passmark benchmarks where it's 800fps and fans aren't turned on yet.

i only had coilwhine on gpus when fps is very high. just limit fps to your monitor refresh rate and you should be fine!

This, I dont have much coil whine on my MSI at all its more like a tone change and not a ringing. I dont use vsync though and pump frames out. When I use an engine locked at 60 though she goes quiet.

Since people has awakening this thread. I can tell, i no longer have the tuf card sadly. The coil whine was to much. I now have a Gigabyte card. It still has coil whine, but significantly less than the tuf card and i have desided to keep this gigabyte card.

I tried a Gigabyte Gaming OC, PNY and Aorus Master 4090. All had too much coil whine even with Quiet BIOS switch. The Master is the worst and Gaming OC was probably the least bad.

I am hoping for something better with no whine. Maybe Inno3D or Galax as the rest even Zotac has crappy fans and many reports of whine.

And I am using a Corsair HX1200 PSU connected tp an APC SMT1500 Smart UPS which is connected to a dedicated 120V 15 amp outlet on its own breaker.

It is so frustrating trying to find a whine free card.

The Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX 3090 Ti I had had very faint to hush or almost no coil whine at all.

I have two Cards RTX 3070 and 3080 The 3070 Palit has almost no buzz but the 3080 strix has it, sometimes even more than the fan. This issue doesn't affect the card's performance, temperature or anything, the only issue is that damn buzz. It would be better if you don't hear the sound by wearing headphones.

Mine is gigabyte 4090 oc. It only had coil whine for the first 30 min and then it stopped. I think to some extent it breaks itself in. I've found the same thing with the 6900xt in another system, just needs to run for a while and then the whine stops.

on some cards it may decrease over time, even if it decreases on some cards, it will make a sound.

With so much current going throw 4090, I think it is almost impossible to find a total coil whine free card.

The tuf card i had before, was simply unbelievable loud. The Gigabyte rtx 4090 gaming oc i have now. Has coil whine and I can definitely still here it. But it is more acceptable level. I could continue replacing card, but hornestly it is to much of a hassle in the long run.

Instead I have undervoltet the Gigabyte card with minimal performance loss. Now running it at 2600 mhz at 900 m. Saves med around 100 to 120 watt and less coil whine. To better control it, I also use power target to lower power consumption even further when full power is not needed, that helps as well.

As a last thing, you can cap or limit max fps in some games or activitie v-sync. That lowering the stress of the gpu and power consumption and by that reducing coil whine or eliminating it totally.

That's my best advice and in the same time reducing your electricity bill. Maybe not. Bad thing either with the energy prices we have these days.

I understand not totally whine free. But the power consumption of the Gaming OC 3090 Ti and 4090 is around 460 watts each and the Gaming OC 3090 Ti clearly had less coil whine.

I tried power limiting it and did not help at all and very little going all the way down to 60 percent. Even less it does help a lot in spurts then comes back a sharp annoying buzz.

What motherboard do you have by the way.

I have an MSI Z690 Unify X.

I have heard good reports of no coil whine on GTX 4090s with Asus motherboards.

What kind of motherboard PSU and case do you have?

And are case fans loud or quiet when gaming

And the games you play are they high end AAA games all settings on highest and what resolution and FPS.

And how close to the case do you sit when gaming

all my current system specs are in my profile.

i don't get any coil whine in demanding AAA games. only in low demand apps

i'm about 3 feet away from my computer and I'm using my P8 as an open air case.

So in high end gameplay no whine. Not concerned if it happens on menus. Though maybe I should be as during an intense game liek RGP if I go to screen to equip something or view a map that is like a menu then boom annoying whine ruining gameplay vs normal menu when only pausing to use bathroom and such.

Oh ok 600 FPS I see. Yes whine fine as that never happens in real world usage that insanely high FPS no one needs.

Also what are your system specs especially case, mobo and PSU. I am finding a trend here where it seems a lot of higher end good Asus motherboards with a good PSU (type not seem to matter as I have heard Corsair AX1600i, eVGA SuperNova P2 and SeaSonic Prime PX-1300) and an MSI Suprim X 4090 have no whine in situations where it matters.

Are you using an Asus mobo?

Ok so not using an Asus board.

Though eVGA Z690 Dark Kingpin is a top tier mobo. Well so is MSI Z690 Unify X and I got coil whine on 5 different 4090 GPUs I tried.

Its a strange lottery indeed of coil whine.

I ordered an Asus Z790 Apex and am going to try it with a PNY XLR8 4090 and hoping to get the best results regarding no coil whine on a 4090 thus far.

I capped my fps at 120 (my pc refresh rate, LG C1) but still having this coil whine issue

Try breaking it in, instead of undervolting go light OC and run benchmark torture test. Fixed my 3090 coil whine completely

Good thread with useful feedback. I have to say, this makes me think it's all the more disappointing we don't have EVGA as an Nvidia GPU partner anymore, they made such high quality cards.

I was considering an ASUS TUF RTX 4090 myself, but now I am thinking of going with the Gigabyte RTX 4090. This was at first for 2 reasons, one being much higher VRAM temps on the ASUS due to them handling the farther HS to VRAM space with extra thick thermal pads, and two, the fact that Gigabyte offers a MUCH better anti sag bracket than ASUS does.

Now there's a possible 3rd reason, coil whine. And although ASUS seems to get only 1 neg comment here on that, vs a pos and neg comment on the Gigabyte, the overall consensus I've seen from review sites is the ASUS seems to have the most coil whine compared to other common brands.

I have one question for those whom own the Gigabyte RTX 4090. Do you use the anti sag bracket, and is it a potential fit problem that it is NOT height adjustable? It mounts to the two bottom mounting holes of the MB on the MB's right edge, and I never thought of it before, but I guess maybe the top Pci-E slot of all MBs has the same positioning in relationship to those MB mounting holes? Also, according to Gigabyte's Anti Sag Bracket installation manual, the part of it that attaches to the MB is fastened with standoffs. It seems OK and all since they also provide washers to go underneath the standoffs, my only concern is are the threads on the standoff as long as a standard MB mounting screw, especially since you're putting washers under them?

Good questions.

Yes any anti sag bracket is a potential fit problem when it is not height adjustable. I had issues where motherboard things get in the way on certain boards like certain Asus Z790 boards which I no longer have. due to to DDR5 XMP stability issues. The Strix boards did not work.

As for coil whine, I have had too much on all 4090s I have tried including the Giga ones. Very disappointed.

Asus TUF seems to be very bad with lots of complaints as well. The Strix seems to have a lot less complaints than MSI Suprim X and Gaming trio, but still too many. Though Debauer video says 4090 Strix his had no coil whine where as the 4080 Strix did and 30080/3090 strix had lots of bad whine and 4080 Strix used same VRM inductors as it where as 4090 Strix uses different ones for its VRM:

Though who knows if Asus is also using any of the same ones on some 4090s at all for the ones getting lots of coil whine complaints meaning they possibly use different components in same tier cards and we do not know it???????
