Luckily it’s just one strip.. but the strip beside it has an inch of glue and the rest has like 3 inches of cardboard on it.. end of the roll Jack :D

So here's my ghetto mod for today. I lent a portable DVD drive to a friend who promptly lost the power cable.
Barrel-jack to USB type. So I just grabbed a spare USB cable to use as a donor. Here are the results.
DVDDrivePowerCableMod01.jpg
DVDDrivePowerCableMod02.jpg
DVDDrivePowerCableMod03.jpg
Works perfectly as well. I've had this drive forever and it has always been rock solid. Never had to replace it.
However, the cable regularly goes missing, so problem solved.

A+ on retention
D- on strain relief

Rather tidy while keeping true to the ghetto mods ethos. Nice addition.

I added an additional pair of zip ties not pictured. Strain relief is good.

Still might want to throw a few narrow loops of gorilla tape around where it enters the case to satisfy the more commonplace use for strain relief - constant bending and twisting.

That's where the zip ties were placed. So there are ties inside and on the outside part of the cable.

So, an update to my above mod, I found a dead USB card reader in a box of parts in my shop and thought the cable was much better suited for this mod. You all be the judge;

This is all closed up and finished. It actually looks like it came that way from the factory. You'd only know it wasn't factory if you look very closely.

I guess it's not so "ghetto" anymore...

odd from 2004 still going strong?
damn ...

also, it's probably due to the age but ... the few portable odds ive had, they used their singular usb connector for both data and power ... is it just wired in a way that it doesnt support this, or does the old design just draw more power than one usb connector can deliver?

USB 3.0? I got one new around 2016 that used a dual-cable design. I assumed it needed more power than the USB 2.0 spec permitted.

Right part for the job I say.

Only bothered you about it because it's a portable device that obviously sees use as a portable device.

odd from 2004 still going strong?
Oh heck yeah, Never had any troubles with it. It's only an 8x drive but it's fast enough.
also, it's probably due to the age but ... the few portable odds ive had, they used their singular usb connector for both data and power ... is it just wired in a way that it doesnt support this, or does the old design just draw more power than one usb connector can deliver?
It's an IDE model and draws a bit more power than a single USB 2.0 connector can provide.

USB 3.0? I got one new around 2016 that used a dual-cable design. I assumed it needed more power than the USB 2.0 spec permitted.
Right.

Oh no worries. I'm not one to give in to peer-pressure. However you did get me thinking, so perhaps Thank You?

I've had the guts of an HP office PC in my closet for the past few months. In the same closet, I recently found an unused binder I'd forgotten about, one that I no longer have use for. Here is the result of putting two and two together:
1678763197726.png
1678763229137.png

1678763250404.png

Specs of this absolute unit of power: dual-core Pentium G2020, blazing fast Ivy Bridge Intel HD graphics, 2x 4GB 1333MHz (best 1333MHz memory I had - any speeds higher would refuse to boot, perhaps a CPU limitation), 2TB WD Black, 220W HP power supply.
Miraculously, the binder *does* close all the way, and I don't have to force it closed
The HDD is nice and snug in its pocket, so it doesn't move at all. The motherboard and PSU are not fastened to anything, but they don't really move at all, either.
I took advantage of the D-rings in an attempt to incorporate some degree of cable management. There are standoffs below the motherboard.
For obvious reasons, I'd never use it with the zipper closed - even a low power draw CPU like this one would get hot.

Please tell me you are going to incorporate a keyboard and screen for the most epic laptop in history.

If you do you win the thread.

Did a bit of adjusting. Really cool how it just gets out of the way and is easy to take off. Easily one of the best redneck jobs I've done.

Didn't realize how fat and big this pc is. Was trying to install a 2TB SSD right where my hand is. like 30-50mm of space.

The keyboard sounds doable. The monitor… not so much
I’ll see what I can do :toast:
