Quadruples would be more in line with file size growth and manufacturer offerings.

If I was looking to replace a 500GB SATA SSD boot drive at end of the year when sales happen. 2TB NVMe would be a very natural place to settle on. Not just to land in the happy middle point of speed and endurance. New drive will be able to quietly expand beyond the inevitable TB between OS/program files with no concerns about a few hundred GB spur of the moment downloads on +GB/second internet connections.

On my gaming PC 2TB minimum for Steam games, 500GB for OS drive.
On my work PC 2TB for work virtual machines, 2TB for other data, 2TB for OS and temp space for zipping VM's for backup.
Recently playing around with ESXI and storage requirements potentially ballooning.

I was doing pretty well capping my total NAS storage for the family under 4TB until I was introduced to Plex.
All my important backups I keep under 4TB for home and 4TB for work since those 4TB USB drives are portable and fairly inexpensive for multiple copies of cold backups.
Got my first 12TB drives this year on 2nd NAS to mostly hold hot backups of PC images, Virtual Machines for work, primary 4TB NAS, and Media.
Once NAS transfers start approaching 1hr for 1GbE for file copy I can see why people swear at Synology's odd issue with sticking with 1GbE for a lot of their devices.

Skimmed through the thread, didn't notice anyone stating it, so here goes: "It depends."

I picked the last choice because I took the poll's question literally (sans the typo), but if you're asking what capacity a random consumer should go for, it really depends on how they access and manage their games/software.
Someone who only plays a handful games at a time, with a decent internet connection and high trust in the cloud, may not need much more than 1TB.
Otoh, someone like myself, who has to wait days to download a 2010s game, would prefer archive them locally instead of re-downloading when they feel like replaying them. The result, in my case, is ~6TB of local archives spread over personal file servers and offline drives. Currently "installed" ones are around 800GB.

To add my entry to the stats:
Main rig has 1x500GB + 3x1TB + 1x250GB =~ 3.75TB total.

Plus around ~25TB in servers, offline or removable drives and laptops.

A back-up is a single failure point. A back-up of a back-up is a plan to escape destruction.

My main rig is a 2TB OS/software drive. I have another 2TB for my games. I then usually have a spinner for data, at 8-12 TB. I have a laptop with 4 TB on 2 drives. I then have a hot and cold back-up, with media storage. 20+ TB there with a 0-1 RAID configuration. Then there's the cold back-up for the computers and other stuff that I keep in the event of power issues, and only update quarterly.

If your question is how much storage is necessary, the retort is how valuable your data is. I for one believe my personal effects are valuable enough to have 3 or 4 to one parity...so that dictates how much overall storage is reasonable.

Well for me I picked the 8tb option because that is closest to what I am at that is keeping me happy. For me on the main drive 2tb is enough to keep up with the crazy updates and games/programs installed on my machine. However, I have a 6tb raid array (raid 5) that has my backups and keeps unimportant files/programs. Currently that is what keeps me satisfied as I have not hit a limit yet and I can keep up cleaning it out.

I have 4TB of storage in the main PC, and a further 8TB in my NAS. I back up not just game installs, but all sorts of media from the internet. Things get deleted, or more often, censored in place. Many of the old youtube videos I enjoyed have sections either cut out or muted because censorship. So now, if I watch something I like, it gets archived at the highest resolution possible. You never know what will be called "problematic" next week, or next year, or 5 years from now.

I also have a pure digital backup of every console game I own, every movie, and every TV show. Like hell I will ever pay $20+ a month just to stream a single TV show because a license changed hands. Same with music.

I'll likely upgrade in a few years to a 4 bay NAS with 16-24TB of storage.

Answer a lot more. I have combined on the two systems in one case 50 TB of of storage.

2 x Samsung 980 pro 1 tb and bofh are os drives one for each system.
Samsung 980 pro 2tb + crucial mx300 2 TB bofh dedicated games storage for the atx pc.
Samsung evo 870 4 tb dedicated storage for games for the mini-itx pc.
WD Gold 14 tb hdd + older wd red 4 tb hdd for storage and backup for atx pc.
2 x wd red pro 16 TB hdd dedicated for the mini-atx pc for storage and backup.
That's all the drives i have in dual system in 1 case build.

Yep that drive would be fine for back-ups only, and that price seems reasonable, and it seems to have some pretty good reviews and reliability ratings too...

However, I don't/won't use anything but nvme's for my OS & personal stuff, but at the office we have several NAS's setups with similar drives, and a few with multiple 20TB spinners for the nightly back-ups plus archives of old project files...

Yes, so, if i think with 8Tb it's enough to have all my stuff, it's the stuff i have on the desktop PC, and that needs backup so it's twice 8Tb, that'd be doubled again if RAID'd be used...

Even though my main rig has two 1TB SSDs, I actually require less than 1TB.

My OS/app drive has 867GB free space, so it's practically empty. I keep my games and other files on another drive, which is currently 646GB free. I don't edit 8K videos, or work with 50MP raw images, and I don't have a large digital media collection, so my storage needs are pretty low. My workflow also doesn't demand large capacities. I usually play one game at a time, mostly old stuff. I have a decent internet connection, so re-downloading is not a problem. My backup rig has a 256GB system drive and a 512GB data drive and neither of them is full.

But I would recommend a 1TB drive at minimum for typical use (OS + apps/games), and preferably 2TB with current prices.

For a laptop, 1TB is enough, maybe 2TB. These days it's all about speed, not capacity. That's why I buy 1 new fastest Hard Disk every year. And I use the old ones as external drives with a NVMe enclosure.

My home machines have 1.5-2.5TB of SSD in them which seems plenty for daily use but I use a NAS with old datacenter drives I've retired and that's currently rocking five 10TB Ironwolf Pros behind a SATA SSD cache over 2.5Gb ethernet.

I wouldn't need such a huge NAS if my internet didn't suck, but I have 30Mbit/s internet which is woefully inadequate these days. Downloading 150GB once is bad enough that I have no intention of doing it a second time....

I have a preference for modded older games for as long as I can see atm, until Bethesda release Starfield, so file size is not so relevant to my requirements.
For the last year or so though 1TB has been enough.
Although upgrading my game drive to a 2TB later this week cause a deal was just too good to ignore & I have other upgrade routines with other systems here but that's beside the point.

I have a 2TB NVME as a game drive (XPG Gammix S70 7200MB/S R/W) and a no name brand 512GB for OS which is actually solid. I grabbed a PCIe 4 drive as game drive as fast as that of a console NVME simply because I figured that DirectStorage would take full advantage of its performance and thus get the boosts needed. Except for it isn't utilized and I wager was a waste of money.

Having more space is necessary if it does come to fruition. But anyway, I need also a large set of drives for a home NAS. But cant afford it for now so I have to use crappy cloud services.
