It appears that AMD is considering, or has ever considered, a six-core variant of the Ryzen 5800X3D.
A photo from insider @g01d3nm4ng0 shows the model number and specs of a Ryzen 5600X3D, with six cores and twelve threads.

Makes sence to me, based on the following.

1. AMD has told that AM4 is not dead yet.
2. With the burning/melting Zen 4 problem shows AM5 needs more maturing, so less people are properly likely to move from AM4 to AM5 yet.
3. What i have seen AM5/Zen 4 sales are not going so well and prices has been lowered because of it.
4. Its a cheaper way for people to upgrade to a 5600X3D, than a Zen 4/AM5 upgrade or for those that might not even can afford a 5800X3D.

Simply put: AMD could be doing this to boost there cpu sale and not to lose costumers to intel, when am4 people has to move to a new platform any way.

Could this give new hope for at 5950X3D, properly not. But it would be awesome if it would happen.

Why Why Why?!

The 3D cashe on 3D versions of these chips are delicate and can´t handle high vcore/voltage or heat. So AMD is forced to lower voltage to cpu cores to keep temp and voltage with in safe limits for the sake of the 3d cashe. This has the unfortunate side effect amd is also forced to lower core clocks. 3d cashe can max handle vcore of 1.35 volts if i remember correct while none 3D zen chips goes up to 1.5 volts vcore to boost higher.

To put it simple: if amd let the 3D cpu´s run like there none 3D versions, you will end up with a lot of dead cpu´s in a short time.

What would the point be? The minimal amount of reject dies that weren't used for Epyc or 5800X3D? For people who want to upgrade their AM4 build with... the best gaming CPU but in... a six core variant?

Makes about as much sense as the 7900X3D... Oh... AMD may just do this then.

The 5600X3D is in the pipeline since some month ago, but AMD took long to make up their mind. I am unsure if they really give it a go or not. Would be an easy method to get rid of semi defective 58X3D,

I don't believe it will hurt AM5 in any way, since AM5 still has higher platform costs and a X3D is an easy upgrade for an existing build. More or less a drop-in replacement for every Ryzen 1-3xxx 6C. You gain higher performance the easiest possible way.

AMD has already introduced AM4 'embed sys' SKUs; they clearly have no intention of dropping AM4 (entirely) anytime soon.

I'm honestly pretty happy about that.

Spare AM4 motherboard;
Spare DDR4 RAM;
Spare PSU;
Spare Data Drive;
Spare CPU cooler( it could be the stock one from a 3300X);

I was able to snag up an Fatal1ty X470 Gaming-ITX/ac new for only $100 new a few weeks ago. Was about $50 less than Fatal1ty B450 Gaming-ITX/ac I got for my wife last year.
Using it as a small test bench. I think newegg was clearing out inventory.

Just the CPU , the rest to power it up is all somewhere in a box or several boxes.250W bronze PSU , 240GB SSD, cpu cooler , b550 mb.
The other 16 Core 3950X is also an option .

that would be pretty cool to give AM4 some more love after all this time... price would have to be right though... currently 5800x3d sells for 288 brand new shipped and sold by amazon, and its been that price for a solid week... so this would have to come in at 189 max...

I wonder if its possible that two less cores and no integrated graphics means there was more room on the chip for more cache? what if this has like 130mb cache instead of 100mb... THAT WOULD BE LIT AS FUCK i want to see cache size scaling benches next, lmao
