Once again, I would just set the P1/P2 value to 150 and don't mess with undervolting. It can be a rabbit hole of stability issues. This why the lower power setting exists for air coolers...

I completely agree! Instead of messing with the voltages for the last... how many days? OP could have just set a lower power limit and called it a day long ago.

Well there is undervolting, and there is correction of overvolting from motherboard vendor (which might also be seen as undervolting).

I dont trust vendors to set a suitable voltage on auto setting, my trust became more cemented given the recent AMD debacle when using high clocked ram.

I think my last 3 intel chipset boards, have by default set a default higher voltage than the intel specification.

My 9900k defaulted to almost 1.4v which was ridiculous. With XMP enabled it auto set SA voltage so high it was causing silent corruption and DMI bus errors.

I plan to start testing my 13700k today (testing parts came too late yesterday to bother), although it will just be basic tests as using a low spec PSU and temporary low end cooler for it.

So guys, i'm here reporting some testings i did this morning following EVERYONE'S suggestions:

Went to BIOS, and did a manual indervolt, changed the following Settings:

Global Core SVID Voltage: Offset Mode, -0.15v
Cache SVID Voltage: Offset Mode, -0.15v

Got a cinebench result of 30kpoints +/- , but still high temps. But, performance increased, because yesterday as i showed you, i was on 27kpoints

So, i went back to BIOS, limited PL1/PL2 to 150W/150W... Results: 26k cinebench, 79º max temps.

Back to BIOS again, PL1/PL2 to 125W/253, results: 30k cinbench, back to 100º temps and thermal throttling.

Last ride to BIOS, set PL1/PL2 to 125W/200W, results: 28k cinebench, temps never went up from 90º.

Well, i finally found the sweetspot i guess? :D

I would have bought a better cooler to enjoy my full CPU's performance.

I mean you could afford a 3080 GPU so..

I'm just trying to avoid getting a better cooler, that's all. If i can get my CPU to perform well on this cooler, why shouldn't i try? If i can't i will end think in getting a better one, but for now, not an option because i don't like big coolers neither AIO's... But, if i would chose one of two, i would chose air cooler all day.

About the 3080, i got it for 799€ on launch day, never saw that price ever again :)

Remove the power limit and put a temperature limit at whatever you are comfortable with. Say 80c or 90c.

I had to settle for a low enough cooler to fit in my case with my 5900x until I could get the funds for a better one. I ran her with a Noctua NH-U9S. The cooler did okay for my CPU. Gaming the temps generally stayed around mid to low 70s, so that wasn't an issue. However, when I was encoding for hours on end at time the temps would be right at 90-92C and things could throttle.

I eventually moved on to a cooler that's better designed to handle the CPU and when I game temps normally don't exceed 65C and when I'm encoding temps hit 78C max.

I could have certainly stayed with the NH-U9S, it was doing the job, but I rather enjoy not having to see my CPU sweat at 90C+ for hours at a time and I also didn't want to have to screw with the voltage or PBO. I'm kind of past the point where I care about OC'ing my stuff or having to tweak MB settings unless I have to.

With a proper cooler for my CPU, my 5900X boosts up to just about 4.9 with all stock settings and temps never touch 80C.

Long story short, if your case can hold a better cooler, get a better cooler.

Yep this is about right. Your air cooler is only good for 125-150w sustained and burst of 200.

Btw the CPU is designed to reach 100c. That's the whole point of it. Up to 100c or until your CPU hits the turbo limit.

I guess you did, congrats! :)

The point of a power limit is to make sure your CPU uses as much power as much heat your cooler can dissipate. With that in mind, I'd urge you to buy a better cooler later on. For now, you're good to go. :)

I guess i will keep this way for now, i'm happy how it ended up.

As your recommendations, i will probably in short therm to buy a new cooler, and i liked Noctua NH-U12A, as it's not huge, sits well on my config and performance seems great.

I use this cooler as well for my i7 12700K, a great little cooler with 7 heatpipes and no issues when you need to get to your RAM kit.

My 13700k is powered up now on cheapo arctic c17 cooler for testing, no OS yet.

Observations.

Almost 40 degrees temp in bios whilst not in a case, although the cooler is trash I feel no airflow from it. :) (ambient 22c)

I selected air cooler in the bios which I assume applies presets to power limits.

I observed the current limit is 241w for PL1, but value changed to 125w as soon as I save bios settings, but interestingly selecting air cooler doesnt change PL2 limit from auto. So 56 seconds of high wattage allowed on this asrock bios with air cooler selected. :)

Ram running at 1.35v at Jedec, oh dear asrock, overvolting again.

I see voltage settings are really complex compared to older gens, so not sure what I will do in that area when looking at my live daily config. But deffo will be applying a sane power limit as suggested by ir_cow in this thread.

There is an overvoltage setting which is defaulting to enabled. At first I thought was a new label for LLC, but LLC is still there on another bios page.

If it fits, get the NHD15S instead. Will run cooler, or cooler for the same amount of noise. Or consider Thermalright as another option. If you are buying a better heatsink, it might as well be the best, otherwise no point as the Dark Rock 4 is already fairly good.

Not sure why the size of the aircooler even matters, if it fits in the case, it goes in the case, the case panel goes on, and thats it.

Out of curiosity, between power limit and temp limit, does either cause frametime inconsistencies worse than the other, if at all?

That depends on the situation, that is, how sensitive the game is for it, how bad limit we're talking about, etc.

Power limit is pretty much normal on modern hardware, but I would try to avoid a thermal limit like the plague.

Guys, Noctua NH-U12A Chromax or Noctua NH-D15S Chromax ? The first one is kinda perfect sized, will sit perfect in my setup.. The other one is huge, but seems to cool a little better?

Guys, Noctua NH-U12A Chromax or Noctua NH-D15S Chromax ? The first one is kinda perfect sized, will sit perfect in my setup.. The other one is huge, but seems to cool a little better?
D15 easily, or wait for the next version of it that's coming out.

Noctua NH-U12A Chromax
U12A works well for my i7 12700K.

Also you can get to your ram if you need it replaced or for whatever reason, you don't have to remove the cooler.

NHD15S. Same or better cooling, less noise.
From what I see, it's only coming in 2024:

It keeps getting pushed back.

If OP wants to be able to get to it's RAM sticks without the CPU cooler removed, the only option is the U12A.... :D
