So I was randomly clicking around the AMD driver's tab and all of a sudden on the "gaming" one it says "Alien Isolation" and I am like....I've never played this game, never installed it. And then I pieced it that AI stands for artificial intelligence and AMD drivers picked it up as a game. What's worrying is this .exe has racked up some serious hours for I have no idea what. Just sayin.....

It is the same in Nvidia Control Panel - Manage 3D settings - Program settings. There are always some "funny" hits from the automatic process detection.

Maybe there's more than one instance of that executable running at the same time, or maybe AMD just aren't good at Maths :slap:

Weird thing is, according to M440's link, the ai.exe executable shouldn't ever be loaded unless you open an MS Office app. so why would it have 185 hours of use in one week? Especially considering there aren't even 185 hours in a week.
Yeah the number is off for sure, may be @R0H1T has a point with the multiple instance guess. My wife uses Excel for her studies and I know Excel was opened a lot, so that's OK. I know where it comes from,

but number is off definitely.

What's AI doing in MS Office? :wtf:
Collecting telemetry I guess, behaviour patterns, searches, queries, most used formulas? Beat me to it, I got no clue.

Anyhow, I could've checked what OFFICE16.exe means, but @M440 resolved most questions with that link and that thread was closed by MS.

It's a poor heuristic that's going purely on the executable name, not considering the path or looking at any attributes of the EXE.

What's AI doing in MS Office? :wtf:
The same thing it's doing in every app: being shoehorned in because "AI" is the current idiotic Silicon Valley buzzword.

Excuse me if I'm feeling a bit of schadenfreude here, but that's because I reported this specific bug to AMD 3 years ago, with Radeon Software picking up non-game applications (it is especially fond of doing this to software purchased from Steam, which it will pick up based on Steam ID alone) and cluttering the gaming tab, taking away any meaning from their usage statistics feature, etc.

Nothing was done about it.

Libre Office is fine for basic stuff sure, but if you're used to Excel and use it beyond the most basic of the basic stuff there is nothing that can replace it.

that's fair, I am a very casual and light user, so I am perfectly with Libre Office, but I understand what you are saying. :toast:

Here's something most of you did not know including myself until yesterday. This information is only useful for those that install "driver only".

If you do a full install, then make changes within Adrenaline, some not all features are retained when you re-run Adrenaline then select "driver only*. I only found this out yesterday after I had issues with my display.
If you now re-run Adrenaline & go back to full install your selected settings are retained. This confirms your driver only install features were still active.

What i'm saying here is, if you go "driver only" you can still have some features enabled/disabled. I just know my selected features are still enabled even thou I'm "driver only". It will be interesting how many users knew this. I'm going to stick my neck out & say most of you did not know this.

I don't know why anyone would ever select "driver only".

I can't speak for anyone other than me, but it's because I don't like Adrenalin. It's the same reason I don't install GeForce Experience.

If I ever go back to Radeon in Windows, it'll be driver only with Afterburner.

YMMV.

I use it because it gives the best overall performance. Your suppose to use driver only with an external overclocking tool such as afterburner. The full install will eat a tiny bit of cycle time away from the CPU. You can see this in task manager.

For the absolute best performance you want less programs in task manager & windows register editing software.

That gives the best overall performance, but any missing features you want, you can enable/disable it in the full install, then go back to driver only retaining your chosen features. I was never aware you can do this until yesterday.

EDIT: Be aware not all features will work under driver only install.

Sure, but you'd want to adjust settings like FreeSync (if you have it), display colour and chroma, and certain 3D Settings, like triple buffering, anisotropic filtering and tessellation levels, frame rate limits, etc. At least I do. :ohwell:

I'm on the exact opposite opinion. Why would I want a third party software for something that I can do in the driver menu? I don't like Afterburner anyway, but I guess that's just me.

I would, but not if it meant living with Adrenalin again. I love my 6900XT and it's perfect under Linux, but I'm much more content with nVidia's method under Windows. Afterburner takes care of setting power limits and the OSD for metrics when I use it. Purely personal opinion and preference. :)

As I mentioned before, YMMV. ;)

Not quite - without the control panel those settings have nothing reading them to have them actually do anything.

Some things are just controls for other existing controls, like setting a refresh rate but many of the other settings cant work without the control panel to actively use them. It's like a cookie after the browser has been quit.

Yup, and this is why I like how Nvidia left the essential settings in the NVCP and didn't integrate everything with GeForce Experience like AMD did with its software.

With NVCleanstall, I can strip everything that I would consider bloat - like GFE (I have third party software that does what it can do better), telemetry engine, etc. and retain a fully functional driver with a no compromise experience.

The compromise is that you're missing a bunch of features.

I don't like the bloat at all- but the nvidia overlay is priceless for diagnosing issues.
