I have no idea. I know my gaming desktop it says I can use virtual backgrounds on Zoom, on my old 8th gen dual core Intel laptop it worked, on my chromebook it will not work (it will allow for a little circle but people can still see behind you some, so no go for me), and on my new laptop with a 2023 intel cpu it won't work. just says "hardware requirements not met"

very annoying. i would use Microsoft Teams, but my employer insists on using Zoom, I have no idea why, its garbage
Oh, chromebooks aren't in windows. Thats why.

Another thing everyone forgets about 11: It has built in load sharing between networks. It cant split one program over multiple networks, but it does spread connections out over multiple networks - using a torrent client with say 4 internet connections (ethernet, wifi, USB, etc) will all load balance and spread out over all of them. Using web browsers tends to stick the whole browser to one connection, but with multiple browsers I managed three seperate connections (4G hotspots) all downloading at their respective full speeds seperately, with no manual effort to control what went where.

About to test this with steam, see if 2x wifi networks downloads faster off an ethernet based host for the in-home file transferring.

Edit: No. Steam just sticks with one network - although my PCI-E wifi card downloads at 2x the rate of the USB 3.0 card, despite the USB card having a higher sync (866Mb vs 585Mb)

Maybe a bit old news but

Microsoft has changed how it updates PCs that run the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). WinRE will be updated using the monthly cumulative update. This change only applies to PCs that get updates from Windows Update (WU) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This change starts on June 27, 2023, for the Windows 11, version 22H2 cumulative update.

Some PCs might not have a recovery partition that is large enough to complete this update. Because of this, the update for WinRE might fail. You will receive the error message, "Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed.” To help you recover from this failure, this article provides instructions to manually resize your recovery partition if you get a system ErrorPhase of 2. This requires your device to have the recovery partition after the OS partition. Use the steps below to verify this.

I use a separate drive to store my weekly backup image files on. I've been doing it for years and am not going to change that routine. Even if the C: drive dies I'll still have a one week or less old backup to do a restore from. It's saved my ass from having to do a fresh reinstall many times due to failed Windows updates (before I got WUB), bad driver "upgrades" or my own playing around with things that failed. I also backup the image backup to an external drive at least once a month on all my PC's.

From what I understand, the reason Chromebooks have the circle for Zoom and not a full virtual background is because Zoom states Chromebooks don't have the power needed for virtual backgrounds. Which was probably true for older Chromebooks, still eh a shitty answer if you ask me.

There is absolutely no reason it should not work on a brand new 2023 Intel N305 CPU though. I have no idea on that one. I even plugged in my 1080p webcam to see if maybe it was just the built in webcam that would not work with virtual backgrounds, and nope wouldn't work for either one. I had the latest Intel inf drivers and graphics installed and windows 11 was fully up to date. so I have no idea.

but yeah going to try an AMD APU laptop next... really wish I could get a decent Zen 4 APU at like $399. damn you AMD for pairing it all with dedicated graphics.
You know thats a 9W CPU, right?
It's not powerful by any means.
1694319287261.png

My 2500K has a similar MT score and its just a four core, no SMT CPU - that MP ratio alone is a huge clue what's going on, it's an 8 core 8 thread CPU with a 4.45 MT ratio? That means its heavily throttled with multiple threads.

And this is the windows 11 thread, which i don't think you're running on that chromebook, it's going to be an OS limitation as much as anything else.

ya i just didn't think a 2023 7nm node cpu would match a 2500k... i never thought to look into it, i assumed Zoom would run fine with win 11 with it.

it doesn't matter, I already refunded it and mailed it back. I will look elsewhere.

I'd look into a used business laptop. Lenovo T series, Dell latitude, ece. They can be found cheap 3-4 years old and will perform WAY better then a cheap google book.

I decided I am going to try to find a used macbook, because all school systems here use it, I just have been resisting it... but there really is no way around it and I need to learn the ecosystem better.

Hopefully a 5 year old macbook can run virtual backgrounds on Zoom... sigh...

Rufus and ventoy both remove it, yep. It is an annoying change but the reason for it is simple enough - your MS account these days can contain your windows/office keys, as well as your bitlocker key.

It may annoy us professionals, but as far as home users go there is logic to it.

Actually when you get to the spot where it says "Connect to the Internet", you can hit Shift-F10, and in the command prompt, type oobe\bypassnro and hit enter, and it will restart the process and allow you to select "I don't have Internet"....

and the first thing I do on all of our clients', is to run bde-manage c: -off . We have NO clients with max control on the PCs, and if they've set a password on the PC and leave under less than best conditions, we need to be able to access the drives....

Not sure who your clients are, but I'd say bitlocker is a must for the enterprise. You can easily store the recovery keys in AD for each machine that only a domain admin should have access to. If this is for the everyday layman well.. I'd still say bitlocker is worth it since they may be naive enough to store PII or financial data, a text document with all their passwords, who knows what else.

A little bit of time searching online will be the most productive since at least a few are hardware specific. I tried a few word perfect searches of options with rufus before them and got very explicit guides.

Even on qualifying hardware I uncheck TPM/RAM/SB.
A few like create local account named ___ have shown to be a little dodgy on some systems. Even more so, preserve current local account.
Setting region and blocking data collection is a given in most cases.

Beyond that here is a link on the rufus FAQ for more technical options.

You will receive the error message, "Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed.”
I got that error message, even when I probably have the WinRE partition at that size. I just shut off WinRE back in August.

Unpartitioned, there is 620 MB of reported space. After the WinRE partition was deleted. Didn't get the error in June nor July, but I did in August, so I got rid of the outdated WinRE.

on my new laptop with a 2023 intel cpu it won't work. just says "hardware requirements not met"
Why the heck on Earth would that happen? I suspect a driver and/or software dependency issue, like the old-school.

well I got my refund on it. turns out my phone supports virtual background, so I am just going to use that, technically speaking my phone does everything so well these days, plus i get monthly security updates for 5 years... there is no reason for me to use a laptop anymore. wifi 6e, when connected to a wifi 6 router, i can't even tell any lag at all.

so no apple and no new laptop and no used laptop for me. just gonna use my phone for everything, fuck it lol

Just checked, mine doe have RE enabled but my RE partition is only 511MB, do i need to change it to 611?
Those changes take effect with clean installs of new versions only - you're fine with whatever your OG was.

Just remember that when you do a clean install, always remove the existing small partitions, even if you don't remove all of em (I have a C: and D: but remove the windows created ones so it can resize them when installing windows on C: )

You're brave...but not alone. A lot of people use a phone for their only computing device. I can't stand phones for general computing and think it's total craziness.
