You picked the download option. Rufus will download the ISO from Microsoft servers, I think.

How much bloat does 23H2 add? I only use my Win 11 PC's for A/V production so I'm curious if there's any reason for me to put 23H2 on one of them.

Indeed as said by someone I switched select to download so it started downloading 23H2 this was the only surprise thought it would of done an older iso like media creation tool was doing.

This was interesting information.

And? Once again, just because microsoft is not supporting it with feature releases doesn't mean anything. All sub-versions will still be supported with security updates until Windows 11 is retired.

No, you missed my point. 22H2 might stop getting feature updates next year, but bug fixes & security updates will continue until Windows 11 is retired as a product. If he doesn't need or want anything but security patches, then they are golden and can continue forward until such time as they want to make a change.

Feature updates? No, those stop as soon as a new release drops. I'm pretty sure its a hard end of support listed there.

Nope. Security and bug fixes continue. The RTM version(22k194) of 11 is still getting patches, but it's not getting any feature updates. Recently tested this.

This is another example of what microsoft says and what they do being two different things.

I'll admit that's possible, but I'd still love to see some actual Microsoft source stating this one way or another, if anyone has that.

Until then it's just rumor and hearsay, albeit from an individual who usually is trustworthy IMO, but still. You know what they say: Question everything lol.

I think that is why they are vague in the wording of those statements. They are trying to keep everyone up to date to reduce their active field variances but are still actively supporting older point releases due to liability and legal responsibilities. I invite you to test this for yourself. Grab a copy of the 22k194(the final beta which became the RTM) ISO and apply patches using the method of your choice, but avoid the major updates. As long as the major updates are blocked/locked out, the security & bug fixes will still filter through.

Yup. Tested this due to a client of mine having issues with selective manual updates. Had to do some testing to see if I could replicate the issue and had no problems. It turns out he had disabled a service that was required for the patch he was trying to apply, but not for all patches. He reenabled it, installed and then disabled it again. He is running 22k194 for a specific reason.

No offense but I don't think it is helpful to spread that information. Microsoft could stop applying security fixes to those versions at seemingly any moment, without cause.

I think we should recommend people stay up-to-date with reference to the official Microsoft support page. If you're running outside that support window you're potentially running a big risk, depending on your use case (home use, business use, etc).

Windows 11 21H2 will not get more updates of any kind.

So I'd assume that "end of support" as stated in here:

Means complete end of support, no security patches or anything. So, what Microsoft seems to be saying, IMO, is that they will only be supporting two versions for Home and Pro at any given time. Since 23H2 rolled out, 21H2 is being killed off at the same time.

Enterprise and Education however get an extra year of support per version.

It's not harmful either. Whether or not microsoft does one thing or another is up to them. They will not stop making and distributing patches for older versions of actively supported OSs/software because doing so would leave them open to legal liabilities they can not escape regardless of the terms stated in the EULA. They are obligated to fix and patch ANY security problems found. This is the reason they still provide patches for LONG out of service OSes such as XP, Vista and 7.

I'm not going to debate this endlessly. What they're SAYING and what they're DOING are completely different. They also have said, several times, that Windows 7 & 8 install keys would no longer work as "upgrade" and activate properly. Yet it's still happening without fail.

Fair enough I won't yuk your yum, but I still think the official support page is what we should go by. If the OS gets patches outside those support windows, then even better!

Given the number of times microsoft has made statements and then either not followed through or gone a different direction entirely, the official pages can't be trusted or relied on for informed decision making. This is true for professional as well as the general public.

Put another way, one can choose to be a sheep and blindly believe what is frequently inaccurately stated or one can choose to think for themselves and rely on known factual information.

I choose the later because in real-life practice, it works better.
