How bad of an issue is GPU sagging and should we really spend on products like support struts?

Yup I lost a nice Sapphire 7970 to sag pre backplate days I used a toothpick holder my grampa made from wood(was probably in Rigoletto mods but the image host is gone. Bur ir was to lae I could wiggle it a a biit and ito would come back unrtil it didnnt
I just got a Helllhound 7900XRX thaf came with some nice ones but its a 3 slot card and I can't even physically make sag but cards afrer that I made srure I did

My case came with one, so not something I had to spend money on.
Was a bit fiddly to use, but that was about the only bad thing about it.

Seems like I forgot to mention the 120mm intake I added to the bottom there in the airflow topic, lol... mixing up subjects here.

This case was running unopened now for I think about 4 months. Dust is pretty much absent. -> also for that airflow topic lol

Anything can be used, I have cut a Slurpee straw down to size, or an old fashioned plastic straw from McDonalds. Not sure where you live but single use plastics like that are being phased out for crappy soul sucking paper straws that are bad for you lol and destroy the flavor..

Oh yeah we're getting that cardboard trash around here. Are they bad for you? That's the first I have heard of them.

I'm sure that abandoning those plastic straws is gonna do a LOT more for the enviroment then banning the burning of bunker oil on freight vessels or opening nuke plants /s.

The chemicals they use are nasty, and they get soggy after a little bit. Now we use our own, we have metal and plastic

The metal ones are pretty cool

imo they should start including a simple support in the box. youre paying so much for them. especially for the higher models it should be included. or maybe one should be included with the case.

My EVGA 3070Ti Ultra did not come with one, but my Torrent did.. and my Zotac was the cheapest 4070Ti by far when I bought it, and it came with a support lol.. I use it on my 3070Ti now

Dont think I have ever had issues with sag but I know my FE card has no sag at all due to the strength of the structure on the card.

I definitely needed it for my Red Devil 6950XT, but my Hellhound 7900XTX has couple really nice ones but I guess maybe because it's a true 3 slot card it just doesn't need one. I mean I kinda just want to use one because it's really nice, but then it'd just unnecessary clutter....

I bought a strut for my card, just don't like to see it bending, even a few degrees. It is straight, it must be a weird angle thing.

I use the Lian Li ones that mount onto the motherboard standoff's. Can't see it when installed unless know where to look & know it is there (if aesthetics are key). Holds my 3080ti level perfectly & cannot slip as fits into actual screw holes on the "meccano" strip.

Paper straws are mankind's worst invention. They are not all the same though, and they seem to improve

By the way, those new plastic bottle caps that DO NOT COME OFF THE BOTTLE.. how about those then. I think they're a good runner up, might even overtake the paper straw in 2024. God almighty

On aircooled builds I would just grab a pen or pencil if I didn't have something more appropriate handy, shrugs. Essentially just a dowel...

My 4090 came with a strut, but I'm using a nice aluminium one I picked up on eBay long ago for $7, shipping included. As for the cardboard straws @ McD, I much prefer them to the plastic ones.

I got them with the 2070s I bought a long time ago but didn't get one with the 6800xt unfortunately. I don't worry too much about GPU sag in my wced rigs. I use the CPU to GPU tubing run to hold it up nice n tight. For aircooled cards I just grab whatever's handy.

I chose from the rainbow assortment of used bicycle brake housing awaiting mucky repurposing.

After filing down the cut edges on metal core. Punched out circle of tape over both ends removed any chance of damaging shroud or powdercoated metal.

Fairly sure @Shrek does the same.

funny that the only ppl saying "you dont need it", are never the ones paying, to replace your hw if it "breaks"...

the only gpu that ever died on me ion past +20y is a 560 that had an aftermarket cooler (silent),
bending the card and resulting in micro factures.

ignoring that my current card is coming with a full block, and at almost 3kg i dont care what "someone" says on YT.

i went with the “giant” support platform option (vertical gpu support) in my lian li lancool 3… but even that is supported by a spacer underneath it. and 3 plastic washers, stacked, supporting the riser cable connector.

I certainly had a support under mine when i had the 3kilo block on it, it needed it as it most definatley did sag. I cannot say about yours though, and is upto you whether you support it or not.
