Windows 9. It was the greatest OS that Microsoft never officially made.
It was 8.1 Industry Embedded Professional, with a Win7 skin on it, and some Win10 bit tossed info good measure. No telemetry, no live tiles, proper patching, no optional garbage. It was a fantastic OS, ran it for years and years until I could get no more updates for it. Very sad to see it go.

Getting a little long in the tooth (dual Ivy-Bridge Xeons)

Which models? You might be able to give that system some more life with a change in CPUs, depending on what you have already.

a RTX 3060 helps

A 4060 would likely also give a bit more life to that system.

E5-2643 v2, IVY Bridge is the best the mobo will support. I had considered moving up to the next gen (haswell I think?) but the cost for replace RAM, etc was more than I could justify. If I was more of a gamer, perhaps, but I still get 100+ FPS in Cyberpunk (sans raytracing) with everything cranked up to damn near max, so I'm okay for now. I'm playing with old 2013 Mac Pro systems now.

if it works I'll have an upgrade path and the t3600 will be a sleeper machine...

but hoping the upgrade will go good.

Ok, something to think about, a pair of 2667V2(8core 3.3ghz) or 2690V2(10core 3ghz) would be a solid upgrade in multi-thread performance, but if you're needing single-thread optimized performance, the 2643V2's that you have is as good as you're going to get.

Just to share info about test I did on my T5500. I am still Win 7 user but decided to prepare myself for the migration.
To make things more complicated I have bought Samsung 950pro and put this little thing inside using cheap extension PCIE card. I expected some troubles but to my surprise - everything worked flawlessly.
Bios (A16) recognizes 950 pro as boot device.
Windows install process went without any problems. Everything has been recognized, no hassle with drivers.
Boots up quick, works fine.
NO magic difference between 860 EVO on Sata II vs 950PRO - in terms of Windows experience.
Samsung Magician shows 1700 MB/S reads and 1600 MB/S writes

hmm most of the older precisions will not boot from pcie nvme without the clover usb boot hack.... Ppl have tried on the T3600 and had to do the clover usb boot hack... according to what I've seen on dell's forums...

The system should at least see the drive, it just won't boot from it without some hackery.. However, instead of NVMe, give a look at a quality SATA3.0 hardware raid PCIe card. They're not expensive, easy to setup and will give excellent performance. They're also bootable. If you like some help finding one, chime in.

I just found out that Dell made 2 different T5820 versions.
The normal one that takes W 2xxx series Xeons.

That threads been quiet for a while. X58 got old. But X299 workstations becoming surplus, and $150 Tesla P100 16GB GPUs ($6K MSRP) might wake things up. No Video output on that card.
The T3500 you could still use ATX PSUs if they have the high powered 5V. rail Dell still used. T3600 they went proprietary.

Here's a bigger cooler. The other one the cover would close with just the heatpipes sticking out through holes (photo missing). The Scythe Ninja would need the cover spaced up some.

I've mentioned the Nvidia tesla P100 GPU a few places. There is one thing that needs to be understood about this card. It was sold as a math processor for use in servers. Servers don't have Video cards, or VGA power cables on their PSUs. So the Tesla 8 pin connector is not an 8 pin GPU connector. It's an EPS 8 pin CPU connector. There are adapters for it to use a couple of VGA connector to 8 pin EPS.

Does anyone know if the T5600 has the "above 4g decoding" option in its BIOS, or is it called something different. I am trying to boot with a Tesla K80, I have sufficient power and the proper 8 pin cable and cooling & would like to boot into Ubuntu. I have been at this off and on for a while now I have read one forum post while down the rabbit hole were someone was able to get it to boot, but of course they don't say how. If anyone knows the black magic required to get this combo to work i would love to know.

I have no experience with this yet. But historically Registry edits are needed to get the Tesla MPU recognized as a GPU (even though the MPU is physically a GPU). I got the Tesla P100 because Nvidia released a gaming driver for this card that eliminates that step. I think you just need to find the right forum and ask the right questions.

So thought I'd come on here and post my experience with my recently acquired Dell Precision 7820 workstation.

I purchased the system locally at a pawnshop for 100.00 CAD at a pawnshop. Came with a silver 4114 CPU, 16GB of ram, 256GB NVMe in one flexbay, and a 2TB SSD in the sata hotswap bay.

I have since:
-Upgraded the ram to 64GB (Will be 128 with the second CPU tray once all parts arrive)
-Replaced the M.2 in the flex bay with a 512GB
-Upgraded the GPU to a 4070 Ti Aorus Master
-Installed 8TB of storage and used a caddy to move the 2TB SSD to the slim optical drive bay. So I have 10.5 TB of storage total.
-I have ordered and received a second CPU tray and dual Xeon 6128 Gold Processors for 60 USD.

I did have to make a custom GPU power cable so I can keep the Second CPU 10 pin power available for the second CPU tray. The 4070 ti has a TDP of 285 watts and the 6128s have a TDP of 115 watts each. So I'm still within range of what the power supply can deliver.

So far everything is working perfectly and completely stable. Installing windows was a bit of a pain with having to install the VROC drivers and others manually but I did use Dells OS recovery tool to make a bootable USB to keep it simple and easy.

This is to go hand in hand with my Dell VRTX Blade system and M1000e Blade system based homelab! I love enterprise hardware and how Modular most things are.
