I got the 1150mV undervolt to stick :) I'm learning more as I go on, I think I was pushing my memory a bit too hard and causing instability.

It's a real shame you cannot do it for per app\game, as you have said some crash.

Personally think it be a awesome feature if you could run one game at 11.20mV and another at 11.50 even more with older games as they tend to run easier.

Hahah Thanks, must be going blind.

Then this should solve other guys issue ?, just a matter of some testing.

Reporting back in from the undervolt mines for my 6950 XT, I am officially throwing in the towel :( Try as I might I can't get my card to keep a stable undervolt, I always have at least one game crashing no matter the values I set (including the AMD auto-undervolt values).

Oh well, i'll just crank the default fan curve to keep the chip cool, I don't like it running too hot. Seems like I might've lost the silicon lottery.

What's with everybody repasting their relatively new GPUs?

I have never seen so many posts like these, and I've never had any thermal issue with any GPU except for my AMD reference 6750 XT which has a weak cooler that no TIM can help. I even have a 1050 Ti and a 1660 Ti, both of which I bought second-hand, both of which are still running fine with the factory paste.

Тбћ, тће oиes you mentioned are all lower power SKUs. Once I get my hands on that LM shot, I expect to find out how the mx-6 held out for about a year sitting, and working hard for a few days each month. Not well considering the already large temp delta.

Tried T30s on a 6900... The paste now performs like >30C hotspot delta, and I'm not changing it until LM come. Not risking tearing the pads, and cleaning that mess of a paste as well twice.
They are better sounding fans than the P12s up to around 1500RPM, from there it's kinda funny on the way to 3000RPM.
But cooling is better, and on a lower RPM, not really a surprise for a >$100 in fans, right? And they send me 1 out of 3 with a cracked blade.

Conclusion is that if the LM doesn't put that damn hot spot under control (with a fresh paste it's not above 20C difference btw), this heatsink is insufficient to cool this thing over 2700MHz in 1440p, >100FPS. It could possibly get away with 1080p, low locked FPS scenario over 3GHz. We'll see. I just move the frequency slider until it's quiet, for now. Fan curve is already getting some character.

Pretty late to the party here! I have been an RX 6000 family member since the great GPU rape of 2021 lol. I had the Sapphire RX6900XT for quite a while. I miss it. I had this running in my mac pro in boot camp before full support was available in Mac OS. Performance was absolutely stellar.

The only thing that I didn't like was the fan noise- seemingly a fact of life for these big cards.

I now have the Apple gouge-compliant W6900X (same basic card in "MPX" form) running. Running under normal loads the computer is dead silent. I can use it for mac os and windows and I have not had any noticeable performance issues, but I am sparing myself the benchmark drama.

The only true challenge I have is getting it to work perfectly in a virtual machine. For those of you using proxmox, vmware, or some virtualization system with these cards, you have probably figured out that loading the oprom gives a more complete hardware passthrough experience. The oprom I generated for the W6900X unblocks booting, but I end up leaving on the virtual vga (svga) "fake" monitor in vmware or else it does not boot up. Apple seemingly uses the vbios to display its crummy logo on startup.

GPU-Z and the other tools I have tried don't get the vbios / oprom out of the card very well.

The oprom I downloaded from techpowerup for the saffire worked perfectly. I am able to generate that myself too using GPU-Z.

I wonder:
Most people are grabbing these bios images off the cards to modify then flash them back onto the cards. Has anyone had luck doing this with more recent Apple AMD cards?

I repasted my RX480 last year, but it was going into a hand-me-down PC that would probably never be touched again.

Now that the warranty on my Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6900XT has expired, a while back actually, I think it's about time I get off my lazy butt and reapply the paste, what do you experts recommend? Repaste just the core itself and not bother about the mem modules (as it tends to be a hassle looking for the right thermal pad thickness)? Again, I'm thinking about this, as to whether I'd do it, or do it anytime soon, is.....that's up in the air for now.

For the bad temps I blame the mx-6 for now, until I take off the heatsink and confirm the paste application is good, so the blame may fall on me.

I've already changed pads, but the mx-6 I used didn't hold for long, even though I wasn't gaming above 80°C hotspot. I made a thread about thermal pads, not much contribution there as people are mostly lazy and afraid to teardown their precious.
In the next days the Conductonaut is going to be applied, and the results will be shared here, or in the dedicated thread.

Why do you want to repaste it, if you don't mind the question? Are you getting bad temps?

As for your question, reading the post makes me think that the PTM7950 or the TG Kryosheet are the only viable options, although the Kryosheet is conductive, so you have to make sure you cut it to the exact size, and it doesn't move as you put the heatsink back.

A few weeks ago I re-pasted my 6750xt from stock to MX-4 and saw a mild reduction in temperature. I have some PTM7950 coming. Every review I have read says it performs better than the kryosheet, is not conductive, and never pumps out. I will definitely post results when I have it installed.

The temps are okay I guess, like when I play DSR, I get about 70C/>85C and while that seems okay'ish, I think it should be better.

Not sure how my 6950 does with that how ever some older games can run under 1050mV and some game need a little over that.

If i get a crash at 1040mV normally just higher it to 1060\1065mV and over the last year it's worked flawlessly.

It's not okay-ish. It's good. I wouldn't repaste it if I were you. It's totally not worth the hassle.

My card refuse to work under 1140mV by all means. I mean, if I set it manually. Moving the freq. slider it does go to 800mV or even lower.

Just got a tube of mx6. Unopened. Now you’re making me think I should have bought mx4

My MX-6 application:

Apart from an obviously excessive amount of paste applied, 3 naked corners (I did spread it all over, so WTF), I want you to observe the centre of the die. WTH happened there, burning paste?

Finally some real world use for these:

IMG_20240217_152831.jpg

While the 1st nail polish layer is drying, and the 2nd is coming (might even get a 3rd), I'll take my time to prepare a new set of thermal pads. I don't like the pressure on some of them, so I will add 0.5 to some places just in case. It's a lot of work anyway, and I want to be sure it has a good contact. Not in the mood to do another teardown anytime soon. Judging by the paste, the heatsink pressure on the die is pretty much even.

Finished with the LM application, added a fresh layer of 0.5mm pads over the old ones I've reused.

Four layers of nail polish, and here we go.

People, just don't bother with pastes when these beasts are in question.
In my previous post you saw how the paste looked like after maybe half a year of rare gaming. I remember spreading the MX-6 all over the die. The thing is much thicker than the MX-4, and a pain to spread evenly - the reason for so much extra paste on the sides. Those naked corners were not like that, the paste just pumped out. And that mess in the center...
I could put 2600-2700MHz in Adrenaline and reach >80°C core and >110°C hotspot in seconds.
And now after testing almost 3GHz on a full load in couple of games, look at the max temps:

Capture.PNG

For less than a €15 you get a far superior cooling solution. Nail polish is €1.
This was my first experience with liquid metal, and I may say I'd kick myself in the balls for not trying it many years ago. Also, the absurd thing is that I can thank PS5 for the Conductonaut availability on the local market. Console peasants are now more progressive than our fresh "PC enthusiasts". Think about it. In the meantime I'll enjoy trying to reach 3GHz in games, the Adrenaline disobey above 2900MHz for now.

Hi,
The mx-6 probably just got drug off from the corners from disassembly as you said it doesn't spread well mostly because it's temperamental about sticking well
Probably cleaning issue I try not to get close to the little doodahs around the die lol

I just put mx-6 on my 1080ti ftw3 so don't talk to much smack hehe

Yeah, I've put so much of it last time, was cleaning the SMDs for a good half an hour at least. Needed that before the nail polish. Too bad the purple can't be seen once the card is assembled.

My 6900XT is pretty stable at 1075mv. I have not had a crashing issue yet.

A can of brake clean and an air compressor can do wonders. ;). Not that I’ve ever done that. ;)
