The AMD Ryzen 7 9700X boasts a robust eight-core design and exceptional single-threaded performance with great power efficiency. In our review we saw good gains with PBO overclocking and TDP increases. Unfortunately, the $360 price tag is steep, and there are several good alternatives available.

Are you going to change the price in the description to $360 like the review body?

Never noticed this before, but what is up with Zen 4 and 5 idle power draw? It makes no sense, when compared to Zen 2 and 3 and single threaded vs. idle numbers, i.e.:

- 5800X3D ST - 22W
- 9700X ST - 22W
- 3900X ST - 40W

but then idle system power draw:
- 5800X3D - 61W
- 9700X - 78W
- 3900X - 59W

Is that because AM5 is just that big of a power hog compared to AM4?

But then, when you go look at the release day 5950X review, the idle power draw is listed as 54W, vs. 71W in this review.

What has changed in those years?

Pretty decent-ish, feels a bit like the tick-tock refreshes of yore like Sandy to Ivy.

@Pumper
That’s the new (well, was new with Zen 4) cIOD. That’s just how much power it consumes, nothing to do there. Cores themselves are extremely efficient, but the cIOD is full power even at idle.

Would you build a 7000-series non-X3D CPU now that these are out? No.
Would you replace a 5800X3D with a 9700X? No.
Would you build a 7800X3D system now that 9700X3D is just around the corner? No.

This staggered launch is a typical "dumb AMD marketing" mistake again. They need to launch new generations by putting their best foot forward. That's the 9800X3D and the 9950X. These two CPUs are great compared to their respective 7000-series equivalents, but those equivalent 7700X and 7600X are some of the weakest and least popular CPUs in AMD's current lineup. The 7800X3D and 7500F are their two bestsellers by a country mile.

@W1zzard The CPU-Z version you are using is outdated. Lack of TDP power next to the Code Name.

Overall, pathetic performance, not worth it even for a Zen 4 refresh, aka Ryzen 7 7750 XT, with few exceptions, I guess in two-three apps it tops the benches charts because of a new instruction? AVX-VNNI?

Meh, hard skip. Wait for the 3D version or just get the 78003D now.

Impressive efficiency and temperatures, but lackluster vs 7700X except if you remive powerlimuts, but then efficiency goes down the drain.

The price on the 7800X3D is likely to drop a ton when the 9800X3D comes out, presumably later this year.

Technically all Zen generations have been tocks, Intel had single digit IPC gains (gen on gen) for most of their tick-tock cadence till at least Skylake. AMD's doing mid/high double digits gains since the original zen to zen5 except the zen+ which was just a "fixed" zen ~
The Ryzen 7 9700X delivered 1.195x the performance of the Core i5 14600K competition or 1.15x the performance of the prior generation Ryzen 7 7700X. The Ryzen 5 9600X came in at 1.35x the performance of the Core i5 14500 and 1.25x the performance of the Ryzen 5 7600X.
Not an IPC test but AMD's generally been accurate with their IPC numbers!

@W1zzard isn't there a little mistake in the scoring for the IGP graphs? How come the 6400 has higher relative performance than the 1060 with consistently worse FPS figures?
