Der8auer discovered a fake AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D that one of his followers bought from a second-hand platform.
The product looked authentic, but there was no chip module under the heatspreader.
It is unclear how many of these counterfeit chips are in circulation.

Bruce purchased a counterfeit Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor from Romanian second-hand platform OLX for 300 euros.
When the chip arrived, it was found to be non-functional. Bruce decided to take out a multimeter to check the product, and found that there was no power to it.
He then got in touch with der8auer, who subsequently purchased the counterfeit chip.

Yeah, suspicion they are fabricated for doing a returns switcheroo so the real ones are kept and the non-working fakes sent back that are good enough to pass a visual inspection, etc.

Not as bad as fakes flooding the market in terms of being manufactured and remarked as other CPUs, but not good either way - clearly the retailers are either sending them out again or they are 'finding' their way into 2nd hand channels.

Same Risk of buying off ebay. My example, an advertised Ry7 5800X and what I got was a Ry7 5800. I demanded a refund and return and gave the seller the undeniable evidence, and then he spilled the beans that the chip came out of a Dell rig, He offered $85 back and I turned it down, he agreed for $100 refund. It's why it is imperitive to test your parts immediately, which I did, it worked out for me. However I should have reported the seller for deceptive practice.

I didn't see, maybe I missed it, if in the video he says anything about the substrate, what I got is that it is much thinner, but is it the real expensive stuff?

This sort of thing brings back memories of the old 386 days and the fake Lv 2 cache chips that were being passed off as real

whoever did this though spent a lot of money and time putting them together

Point is deceptive practice was at hand in my example and why it's important to test your parts as soon as you get them so you can challenge these swindlers. Same ol story of fake 1050s being gt450s

I personally never have and never will buy used electronics UNLESS I personally know the seller and the history of the device. And I don't mean a friend of a friend, a neighbor's coworker, or a cousin's brother-in-law. I mean a specific person and original owner of the device that I have known as a friend, or a nearby long-time neighbor, or my actual first cousin - and I know where they live.

I know many have bought $1000s from eBay with no problems. But I also know and have heard horror stories of many who got ripped-off. If I am planning on getting years of service from the device, I will pay retail (hopefully on sale) price for a new product, in its original packaging, fully warranted by the manufacturer, and from a reputable authorized merchant.

Speaking of reputable sellers, I went out to https://www.olx.ro/ where the original buyer claims to have bought the chip and the first thing I noticed (after translating into English) on the webpage was,
Pay only cash on delivery to the courier.

Side note and hypothetical question - I note the seller is in Romania and Romania is an EU member country. The EU has some of the better consumer protection laws in the world. I wonder if the buyer had any recourse here? Probably not.

The 7800X3D is the number one selling CPU in the World. We don't know at what point these chips were pulled out of the channel. It could be the original seller having access to the technology to remove the Chips and leave the substrate. That is more involved than some person in their basement.

I wonder if the actual chip is registered on AMD through the MB.

Organised crime for real. The machining on the IHS being BETTER than AMD's is mind-blowing.

It is very bad though. I remember there was a story about an Intel store in China that was not Intel and the CPUs were pretty much the same as this. Indeed the access to the equipment needed to create the heat spreader smells heavily of organized crime. The website and the fact that it is based in Romania do not help to point a different picture. I expect some Dept in the US is covertly looking for a source on this.

This is not like the 6600M or those 4080s and 4090s that are actually just laptop versions on DGPU form.

I don't really like second-hand electronics too in general, but with the idea of making an sff pc with AM4, all the motherboards I could find were very expensive for the features they offered. I was looking for one with an internal usb-c connector, starting at 220€.

A B550 with usb-c and optical sound output on ebay was 160€, I took it with the 32GB 3600MHz ram kit he was selling for 70€ and it works perfectly with a 5700X3D.
What convinced me that this was a real offer was the photo, the other items he was selling and the descriptions.
He still sells a 5800X for 165€ for those interested. ;)

All of this reminds me to change my systems in tpu.

Romanian, says a lot tbh.

Best not to buy off some dodgy(ish) secondhand trading site, stick to CEX imo, at least it is tested and has warranty, which even ebay does not really.

To me it makes 0 sense. What is the margin of profit from getting all the materials procured and made and the cost of that equipment to make them for a few bucks for at 300$ item?

No sense at all.

What Der8auer is showing is a complete dummy/replica CPU package at first glance.
Just a piece of PCB with SMDs on and IHS. No chips were on that ever, for sure.

Of course some one who saw a bunch of AM5 CPUs like him starts noticing small differences right away.

You probably didn´t watch the video, these fake CPU´s have no die at all...

What a shitty, greedy world we live in.
Yeah, and then it also went online, go figure

So much this. I can't stand it 90% of the time, and its a complete waste of time over reading a text that takes all of 3 minutes. More often than not you're watching 15 minutes of bullshit voiced by pure annoying nerd vocals and/or overdone theatrical faces for kids... why can't they all be a GN's Steve I wonder. We have AI video generation now... maybe that will finally make it take off!

Organised crime for real. The machining on the IHS being BETTER than AMD's is mind-blowing.
Someone quick send EK a sample !
