is fraps still a thing for screen recording?

FRAPS still exists, but it's pretty outdated for screen recording. I don't think it was all that popular for recording back in its heyday either; people mostly used it for the FPS counter.

Another video recorder of similar vintage is Hypercam 2 (known for the Unregistered Hypercam 2 watermark)

thats right and why they used screen record to show fps. it was THE program people used. maybe you werent int the gaming crowd in those days. thats all what people used back then. they were the dominant program.

I have to see why im having an issue with it on w7. will run it on offline windows10 pcs I have

fixed fraps. thanks everyone. kick asz!

Yeah we get it, you refuse to get on with the times. If you aren't welcoming to suggestions, nor do you want help, then maybe don't post about it. Fraps is irrelevant nowadays whether you like it or not.

It's broadcasting software for streaming and 133MB is peanuts in this day and age. I already have it installed and setup, so I just use the recording feature with it if I need to capture something. I know all about FRAPS as it used to be "FRAPS or it didn't happen," but time has passed the program by. The last release was in 2013 and supported compatibility ended at Windows 7. Fraps 3.6 was teased with Windows 10 support, but didn't happen.

Supposedly it still can capture gameplay video in Windows 10 from what I'm finding.

How to use Fraps on Windows 10: Literally just install and run it. Worthless clickbait garbage. I have it installed on W11. It never stopped working, only newer software developed after it is incompatible because Fraps is older than the APIs these games use. Until beepa comes back from the dead and updates their software, there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Glad you got what you want, but there are somethings that must be said (in case someone else went through this thread, or you found out your application won't work with some games, or it broke with the next Windows update. Remember that Win10 is EoL in less than 14 months):
perhaps tracking/stealing data
This doesn't require big binaries. See malware sizes in general. They usually are some of the smallest programs out there.

While modern application development is indeed a crapfest of "native" apps comprising of 1 MB core logic and >200MB electron or CEF or whatever, in this specific case you're not going to get any decent software at FRAPS' size range. Encoder libraries alone can take several times the size of the entire FRAPS package. The popular ffmpeg library takes anywhere between 30~60mb alone.

133mb for a program? wth! fraps is like 4mb. pass
The bulk of OBS Studio's core is made up of ffmpeg libraries and qt runtime. Both are respectable projects with little to no complaints about them. It also includes the debugging symbols (not really required for end users).
2/3rd of the installer's size is for the extra "plugins," namely the web-integration stuff (since OBS is popular among streamers), which, iirc, you don't have to install.
Oh! And OBS is an opensource project. Which is far more trustworthy than the closed-source FRAPS.

There is nothing inherently wrong with using the former. Using the latter is usually a bad idea, but making a habit of it is always a bad idea.

Yeah, but Fraps is both old and unmaintained... and this argument about size is absolutely HILARIOUS given Fraps only records in raw format or their proprietary codec which is at almost raw file sizes as it prioritized speed over compression so it ran at all on single-core CPUs of the time.

You won't record a minute of video with Fraps in a modern 3840x2160 display within 4 GB (Fraps splits video files in 4 GB because its just so old it's still designed with FAT32 in mind, I believe an option to disable the raw split was added in one of the last updates it ever saw), but I can do 10 minutes of HEVC 4:4:4 at a passable IQ with Action!. Honestly, Fraps is just obsolete and it's not only not recommended, but not cut to do the job anymore. If OP wants to use it anyway, all the power to him and on how to handle the absurd files it generates. But he is a stubborn fool repeatedly coming up with excuses to justify his deluded fantasy.

Do you have an Nvidia CPU? If so, Nvidia Shadow Play is an option.

Shadowplay for Nvidia, ReLive for AMD, QuickSync on Intel, Action!, Playclaw, Bandicam, OBS Studio, MSI Afterburner... I think even the ancient and long forgotten Dxtory is ahead of Fraps

dont get so insulted or sensitive because I prefer fraps. your insistance is like mild bullying.
fraps works well for me. exactly how I want it. it may be old, but it still does it like I knew. I usually will research what to use but with this times have changed. too many and I couldnt tell whos legit

I will not move to windows 11. microsoft has gone evil and I wont support them. even w10 is too much . they can forget it.

ill take a 2.5mb file over one thats 133mb all day. I have many prgrams that use tons of codecs and libraries etc and none of them are this big. 133 isnt huge as a number but when you compare to the 2.5mb fraps, I am very suspicious. as a pro privacy advocate, I mostly stay away from many programs. very strict on what Ill install and even IF I will install.

I will do research, check and then decide. I checked for a screen recorder and there was quite a few vs what was back then but size is my main issue. it makes me suspicious. fraps works for me. im happy. it has high quality full size video at the original quality. if I need it compressed I can use handbrake or another program. handbrake is ONLY 13mb. another small and very competent program and super fast. even my browser on my phone is a small foss program called privacy browser by stoutner. you look at the other browsers 100mb+!!! his is only 10mb!. no added tracking or backdoors like the other browsers have.

Im not mainstream dont have a worry to use older programs. I prefer it. if in its core it has what I want then no reason to get newer that has more features. I dont believe in the "for security" sake fear mongering. ive used a windows 7 pc till recently and NEVER updated once. no antivirus. its all common sense. dont install pirated games, dont click endless porn links. dont download transfers you dont know. dont open emails. know what youre clicking. I do my own thing. and I will never use w11. with google backdoor. not going to happen.

If you're going to be pedantic about software size (and that's a good thing), I really think you should invest some time looking into, at the very least, how software is packaged, including their dependencies.

For a very reductionist example: The 22* MB Handbrake actually depends on a 55MB .NET 8 runtime (a product of said evil Microsoft, btw). In contrast, OBS installer contains all(?) if its dependencies. Notwithstanding the obvious difference in functionality, and notwithstanding differences in compression schemes.

You can argue that added functionality is useless to you and thus a bloat. But you can't just say it's "suspicious" based on what isn't even worth being called a circumstantial evidence.

And again: OBS Studio is an opensource project. If you're suspicious about what it - or any similar software - does, check the source code! Or check with those who do.

This room temperature IQ behavior is really, really frustrating. So you made a thread to say you're closed to suggestions, closed to learning about newer alternatives, that your "preference" is non-negotiable, and that you don't care what anybody says - so why did you even post a thread to begin with?

I lost all respect the second I read this holier than thou line

I never use Fraps for FPS monitoring and/or screen capture because AMD's Radeon Software can do both and so can Nvidia's. OBS Studio is also a very popular program, so there's a decent chance someone would've found spyware code in it by now. Regarding program size, complaining about a ≈ 130 MB program in this day and age is pedantic at best. Finally, be open to other people's ideas here in general; after all, that's what you came here to find out.

nso pegasus. sure. and? every other pc phone must be infected then? you went abit extreme.

btw, I dont use fraps for gaming always. and its not for youtube uploads.
I was more referring to attacks like this

sure, I checked the various things suggested. but dont get offended if I dont use the suggested. I try to do research before posting and I asked specifically about fraps too. there was an overwheming amount out vs what was years back

I know and have been happy with fraps. I now have it working and thats enough. im very suspicious of file sizes that are far larger then what I have used or is available that work fine. you can decide for yourself if 133mb is ok for a screen recorder but I use a 2.5mb program so then I always wonder why something is 20x bigger.but your opinion isnt relevant for why and how I install programs based on size.
yes, they said it does other things but I prefer less size then more and dont need the other features. even pdf viewers. I found the smallest viewer thats like 5x smaller then the next one I checked. there must be some bs shoved in there to need to be so large.

tech companies are evil af today. they have tons of tracking and steal data. not all, but the good amount of them

Better options came along that weren't paid products and it couldn't compete would be my guess. The developer went dark and the trademark is expired. It's a dead product.

I use OBS on Nvidia GPUs and ReLive (built into the driver) on AMD GPUs.

Both are free, both use hardware encoding.
And why not use ShadowPlay as it beats ReLive with absolute ease? Pretty much zero performance hit and bitrate/quality is higher than ReLive as well.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
And why not use ShadowPlay as it beats ReLive with absolute ease? Pretty much zero performance hit and bitrate/quality is higher than ReLive as well.
I try not to recommend bloatware that has unnecessary account creation restrictions, uses a ton of RAM, and sends a bunch of telemetry to Nvidia if you want to use it.

Yes, Shadowplay is good but it comes at a cost. Thankfully Geforce Experience is soon being being replaced by a lighter app that doesn't require an account (yet).

Looks like you have zero experience with it.

Nvidia App has existed for a long time and requires no login.

ReLive is pretty much trash compared to Shadowplay. Worse quality and higher perf hit.

Every single AMD feature is a watered down Nvidia feature at this point. Nothing new here. AMD invented nothing in the dGPU space for generations, they merely try and copy Nvidia features and fail. If you don't agree, go ahead and read about FSR vs DLSS/DLAA on this site, tons of games are tested and Nvidia wins every time. Also wins in RT and Frame Gen with ease.

Reflex beats Anti Lag + too (and AMD GPU users were VAC banned before AMD pulled it again), some users were banned for months, this just confirms that AMD is panic-rushing features and their drivers are wonky too, when you leave the most popular stuff its hit or miss, mostly miss - With Nvidia you get good performance across the board, including alphas, betas, early access titles and emulators. Wonky performance and mediocre features was the reason I left AMD GPU behind last time and I am not coming back anytime soon - maybe RDNA5 will be good but years away.
