Mike has found some late 90's desktop goodness.

Looks good Lex.I will give it a try now that i have finished trying to convert my Amiga floppy,s.
I also used this for several years on XP until I switch all my systems over to Windows 7.

Yesterday I connected a 32-year-old 125MB Western Digital Caviar 3.5-inch hard drive to a modern socket 1700 motherboard, and it still works perfectly. I was able to access the data on it. It was manufactured in 1992 and last used in 2002.

That is something! I try to boot my 40GB WD IDE from back then and it clicks like crazy. My first SATA drive, Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB still works thankfully.

I recently opened up an old hard drive and gently moved the read/write arm. To my surprise, it started working again—no more clicking sounds. The drive had Windows 95 installed, and it booted up perfectly on my AMD K6-2/500 system.

A PCI to SATA/IDE adapter (VIA 6421 chipset), very reliable in my multi-boot setup where I run Windows 3.x/9x and Windows 10 on the same hardware.
There's also that! Those cards are fun too!

My oldest drive is a 60GB Hitachi SATA laptop drive from 2006. The oldest IDE model is a Fujitsu 120GB laptop drive but from 2008. Both still run perfectly and are in USB enclosures.

Found this case.
Bought it for the 3,5" and 5,25" brackets

Missing the power/reset switch, button and leds. and the top is broken in 2 places.

I will use the front brackets for my old case, and some other little things. There was also a PSU. Oh and the top of the case i will use ofcourse. the rest is scrapmetal :peace:

Out with the old and in with the.... Equally as old. Bought an XFX HD6950 also from Goodwill and installed it into the Goodwill x58 PC. Also put in a 256gb cheapo SSD I pulled from another PC. GPU works great.

Installed Windows 7 from my very outdated DVD and had the joys of manually installing a couple updates then letting the auto updater several rounds.

Have been playing a few games on it but will install some more to really let it stretch it's legs. I have a feeling the 6gb ram will be the biggest issue in this PC. Steam still works on Windows 7 thankfully, despite saying it won't.

May also overclock this some. 920 has some potential and this is a decent board. I probably won't mess with the GPU for fear of damaging it, old GPUs seem to be a lot less tolerant to abuse than CPUs.

Well, the tally of the Voodoo cards doesn't look great from the Bucharest lot... but not bad either:

- V3 PCI - bad GPU
- Golden Innovision Banshee - artefacts in Windows. Managed to fix it after seller agreed to send another Banshee (ELSA branded) - apparently this one's issue (besides a pretty mangled VGA port that needs replacing ASAP) was broken solder on 4 of the 8 RAM chips. Took a whole night to fix but hey, I got myself another Banshee besides the ELSA and my (already working) 3D Blaster Banshee.
- V3 3000 AGP - bad RAM but also traces were so brittle they ripped off unfortunately. I am also being sent a working one to replace this one.

As for Sunday's loot:

- LianLi case w/ EVGA branded nForce 680 SLi mobo, Q6600. Dropped 4GB of RAM and a 8800GTX, as well as 2x SAS drives because why not.
- Fastfame 3IEF w/ Tualeron 1GHz
- HP Vectra VL400 mobo w/ P3 733

Another fun build started.
Asus P6T SE (unmodded bios, it gets sli support mod later)
i7 920 will be replaced with x5690 (cheap from china, ebay)
just throw in a bunch of random memory sticks to test the compatibility and the slots. (random brand 8, 4, 2, 1600-1333, single and dual rank)
It only eats 1rx8 or 2rx8 modules so with the i7 the max is 6x8Gb 2rx8 ram (48gb)
The xeon can work with ecc reg but in this mobo it only works with the 1rx and 2rx8 modules so still 6x8gb is the max with ecc reg (the 16gb 2rx8 modules are very rare in ddr3)
Cpu cooler needs a new fan (it was from a destroyed pc case)

The goal is:
x5690 + light OC (4Ghz)
Thermalright extreme ultra with AC 12cm Fan
3x8Gb hiksemi (chinese) and 3x4gb Kingston 1600mhz ddr3
256gb Intenso SSD
Win11 Pro latest
video card and psu not decided yet

The motherboard is a Msi Ms 6167 and the video card is a Ati Rage Fury Pro 32mb. I bought all of it back in the late 90's. This was my final windows 98 rig before moving to socket A and windows xp. I bought the golden orb back then also. I have a Dragon orb for socket A and the big blue orb for socket 754 and 939.

And the ELSA got not only a heatsink, but an active cooled one at that. Donor card from which I got the HSF was an Mac-flashed Rage 128 for which no BIOS I could find would work properly.

You have pictures?

Maybe give it another try, with 12%. Don't mix with water
Here's my post from earlier on:
It's a PCV-LX700 slim top with a 733 MHz Pentium 3 and 512 MB of ram. I got it for free at the Vintage Computer Festival Midwest in the Chicago area earlier this month.

I would try it again, but the sun isn't particularly strong atm where I live because we're going into winter and I think it looks good enough as-is. To me, the PC is a bit like a high-mileage car: it'll look old regardless of what I do.

You don't really need the Sun. A UV light and a water heater set for 50C in a tub of 12% H2O2. These are the key ingredients anyone can utilize to get a great result from retrobriting.
