The Ryzen 7 9800X3D establishes AMD as the leader in gaming performance. This Zen 5-based X3D chip is not only fast, it also comes with full support for overclocking. Besides gaming, application performance is considerably improved over the 7800X3D, but that comes at a price.

Thank you for the review, this is what I saw so far, the 9800x3d uses a lot more power than the 7800x3d, maybe underclock it a little and lower the voltage a little will make it a champion x the 7800x3d in power consumption and efficiency. Also the 9800x3d appears to be at least 30% more efficient in cooling x 7800x3d. While 7800x3d does 69c stock using much less power, 9800x3d stock does 60c while using a lot more power.

Apps
9800x3d is 15% faster than 7800x3d

Gaming:
1080p 9800x3d is 4% faster than 7800x3d.
2160p 9800x3d is 1% faster than 7800x3d.

what an absolute monster of a gaming cpu... man i want one...
hey @W1zzard do you think in the game tests you could add in what % cpu usage % gpu usage for the individual games?
If it is too much hassle all good..

Feel like the 9800x3D is just a tweaked version of the 7800x3D. No real advancements except 700MHz more base clock and a little overclocking head room. You could say 9800x3D is just the tweaked version of the 7800x3D. I was hoping to see a larger 3D cache in the 9800x3D BUT I am guessing AMD didn't have to do more since Intel is on their knees and can not really fight back at the moment. Maybe we will see some real progress with the Zen6 version of the x3D CPU.

Why use 23H2?

I could maybe understand it for Arrow Lake systems and for that review but to use it here seems incorrect.
AMD recommended testing on Windows 11 23H2, which is what we did. Currently, 24H2 just has too many bugs, and it looks like Microsoft isn't exactly fast at getting those fixed.

Future software

As you've certainly read in the conclusion: "Intel on the other hand has introduced an NPU for AI acceleration with Arrow Lake, which is missing on Zen 5 desktop processors. That's not a problem either, because at the moment most AI experiences are cloud-based or run on the CPU/GPU."

What part of the gaming improvement can be explained only by higher frequency compared to 7800X3D?

Still can't believe how far down the gaming performance chart the new Intel 285K is. It's shocking lol. All that R&D, newest and best process node and complete design and they end up in 11th position...

Nothing surprising here, still waiting for multiple CCD V-cache chips, not willing to trade MT performance for gaming performance.

Best gaming CPU on the market again! well done, and a very decent showing vs Zen 5 launch. Enough to upgrade from my 5800X3D yet? we'll see.

Simulation games in 4k plz. @Vayra86 Buy one and test your crazy Farthest Frontier saves.

Anyway yeah €550, quite close to the current 7800x3d pricing. Still hoping for that to drop again, but I'm assuming it wont.

I mean, fair, but I don’t think there are a ton of 720p on 4090 enjoyers out there. For all actual practical purposes there is zero difference between mostly any i/R7 and up CPU from, like, last three gens.

Also, unfortunate that it lost energy efficiency compared to the 7800X3D. That was a truly special part of it. Not like the new model is a power hog, but the pessimistic predictions of its uplift being mostly due to MOAR POWAH BABY turned out to be mostly true, unfortunately.

I'm proud to announce that I'm choosing Ryzen 7 9800X3D to power my new GPU Test System. This is what I'll be testing NVIDIA's new GeForce 50 Series with.

W1zzard's FML gets a x2 because all that retesting of old GPUs, LMAO

As expected, the new gaming performance king is here, and intel's regression this generation now looks worse than it did before. Nothing surprising really, can't wait for 7800X3D prices to drop!
