Right. Higher resolution and lower tier GPU tests would be much more relevant for a "normal consumer".
The purpose of testing the high end GPU at low rez is to force a higher load on the CPU to push the CPU to its limits.

Maybe, after 500x more explanations, people will be able to get that idea into their heads. Nobody is stopping you from reading the reviews on lower end GPUs where they are tested at higher resolutions as part of their benchmark.
First make an effort to read through the review before commenting

You're expecting a lot, the peanut gallery doesnt like READING the review, or comprehending what is said. How many times have we had to explain why the 720p test is done with a 4090?

Thanks for the review.
Pretty high power consumption, 65W would have been nicer in my opinion.
You can then set the TDP to 65 watt and enjoy. Or just get the 7800x3d.

@W1zzard I think your sample is bad, because in 1 hour Der8auer acheived 5.6GHz easy without optimisation on is CPU for the OC section. Maybe somethings was wrong if 5.3GHz was not stable alteady

I've got a 7700X and game at WQHD, I believe the 9800X3D would give me about a less than 10% boost on average. I think I'll sit this one out. Hopefully, AMD has one or two more AM5 CPUs incoming, otherwise the whole AM5 longevity thing will be pointless.
unless you play MMOs, Racing Sims, flight sims or anything that loves vcache. if you do you'll probably see more than 10% boost even past 1080p.

Bit underwhelming, Very nice SQL numbers though. should make the 9950x3d a very interesting chip for workstation/server applications

No upgrade for me though I hope zen 6 will be more impressive and still AM5

Honestly, who cares about 1080p.

I get it, performance and all that.

But to spend this kinda scratch to play at 1080p is comical to me.

Benchmarking and its methods are a total mystery even to moderators, apparently.......

You benchmark at lower resolutions to push the CPU to the limit to test its actual capability. Same reason you test a GPU at 4k even if it cannot push 4k properly. A CPU test at 4k is as pointless as a GPU test at 720p. This gets explained every time there is a CPU benchmark and people still cant comprehend it.

Also, high refresh rate gamers? You know, the guys who do esports and competitive shooters? They all play at 1080p, and they want HIGH framerates. So its not a useless test anyway.
unless you play MMOs, Racing Sims, flight sims or anything that loves vcache. if you do you'll probably see more than 10% boost even past 1080p.
Dont forget games like Factorio, that slurp up those cache gains, or games like starcraft II and sins of a solar empire/rebellion.

This is an excellent result. It's actually even a bit better than I thought it would be against the 7800X3D, to the point I wonder why has AMD bothered with the traditional non-3D Zen 5's at all. Looks like the "standard" cache size just isn't enough anymore.

If you haven't got a 7800X3D, get it! If you have, be content at having the 2nd best gaming CPU.
And still by large margin, the most efficient one, which honestly to me is a bigger win altogether.

I'm looking at this 9800X3D kind of like a 'balls to the wall' 7800X3D. More power, slightly more performance.

Also, unfortunate that it lost energy efficiency compared to the 7800X3D. That was a truly special part of it. Not like the new model is a power hog, but the pessimistic predictions of its uplift being mostly due to MOAR POWAH BABY turned out to be mostly true, unfortunately.
Yep....

This likely mitigates the IF/IOD not being updated like it should have been.

That being said for Zen5 they probably should have went X3D only although my guess is vanilla 9000 will drop to appealing prices it's not like it's actually slow for most users.

or maybe Der8auer has a very good sample? Der8auer also delidded the chip. We'll see in the future.

I have mixed feeling about this chip. It uses substantially more power than 7800X3D. I don't think there's any magic here. Moving the cache to the bottom allowed AMD to crack-up the frequency (and the power). I am pretty sure if you run the 9700X at 120W, you'll get the exact the same performance in all applications except the most cache sensitive ones (games, mysql).
Likewise, if you force the 9800X3D to run at 65W, you'll find the familiar Zen 5% over the 7800X3D.

I'd say you won't see AM6 until DDR6 is a thing in the market.

If memory doesn't fail, it usually takes a year and half or around two years from the moment the spec is finalized until the memory kits start entering the market in significant quantities with motherboards that can support them.

I'm seeing some comments about DDR6 spec being finalized in 2025 so, I'd say we're not talking about AM6 until 2027 at least. Plenty of time for AMD to get at least one more generation out, if not two, for AM5

Ok, I watched the yt reviews and enjoyed the bloodbath.
Now the serious question. Should the 5800X3D owners upgrade or not?
The Hogwarts Legacy numbers have been haunting me since 7800X3D came out but now it's getting out of hand.

Dude..

I just looked at the review.

It trounces my 5900X, and 5800X3D in absolutely everything.

Good deal.

Sorry, but your game test is still bad. Hogwarts and Starfield badly needs a new custom scene. Hogwarts is actually very hard on the cpu in the castle, or in the city. Both big part on the game. Starfield and Hogwarts screw up your average. Thats why HUB shows much more difference between cpus.

Impressive gaming performance, but I’ll repeat my comment from 2-3 days ago. Right now this money buys a 14600k and a decent Z790 board. Also 9700x and 9900x are way better deals if someone doesn’t own a 4090. Of course prices (and value) can change…

This to be honest.

Aside from the tinkerers and the "must have the absolute best" kind of people, I'd argue that even with a 5000 series you'd be hard pressed to justify the change unless you were already planning a motherboard + RAM upgrade and were just waiting for a CPU that catches your eye.

Should the 5800X3D owners upgrade or not?
Are you willing to get a new motherboard and new RAM kits and maybe do a full system reinstall for a 15 or 20% performance difference at 1080p (less impressive if you go higher res, with 4K being a measly 5%)? If so, go nuts
