Contrary to being on here since forever, I completely fell off the scene of memory oc and cpu and what not.

12400f runs hot. Stock cooler of course. Are these easily undervolted? Also, I have no idea what the hell is gear mode... I figure it's the memory controller has to be 1:1 in orde to be gear 1 right?

When I moved it to 1:1, pc wouldn't boot.

I am assuming this is abysmal, is this correct?

After setting XMP2 settings, I get of course better clocks:

But I need help understanding wtf is GEAR 1 2 3 or whatever and how do I spot it?

Also, after benching and checking temps, it goes as high as 90 C and it doesnt even go to 4.4GHZ like its supposed to the 12400f. The stock cooler is hot trash.

I can relate. After sorting out a system the years can start to pass on what used to be stored and updated in immediate recall.

1:1 memory OC is an AMD Infinity Fabric deal. Gear 1 XMP profile on Intel should be very easy to set and not worry about actual OC.
Does your RAM list a second or third profile under XMP?

As for temps with stock cooler. Disable Asus Performance Enhancement. You want stock Intel settings and to improve on the cpu operating range in other ways.

I disabled it but cpu gets as hot as 90°C and it doesn't excess 3.7Ghz so it's throttling.

I of course placed new thermal paste and still this is pathetic. I'll have to get a new cooler for such a weaker cpu.

Honestly it is hard to gauge much based off a chip and stock cooler. There is a laundry list of BIOS settings that will do nothing if your board is heat soaked. Same with lowering OS power plan and removing or turning off a billion things. It is a complicated mess to sort out but if you have no air flow in your case whatsoever the game is over. ITX and heat go hand in hand.

Gear 1 = memory and memory controller speed 1:1
Gear 2 = 1:2 - typical memory to memory controller speed for ddr5.

System Agent voltage is locked, don't expect huge frequency over 6000mt/s. Some will do more, requires trial and error.

You will stick with Gear 2.
Visible in memory tab of cpu-z.
Yes, grab a better cooler.

Are these easily undervolted?
Depends on the exact SKU. Silicon lottery is a thing. My 12400F has a very deep loathing towards undervolting for example. Even -15 mV break stuff.

However, I use Laminar RM1 and it never runs hotter than 80C (65C in real gaming). Probably you might wanna install the socket bracket so the downforce becomes much more even. LGA1700 is a geometrical crime.

Also your thermal paste might be rigged. Apply something else and see if it makes any difference.

And yes, 90C max temperature is OKAY for these CPUs. Just keep your CPU voltage in check, it has to NEVER surpass 1.4 V. Overvoltage is a much more certain way to kill this CPU than overheat.
it doesnt even go to 4.4GHZ like its supposed to the 12400f.
Its all-core boost is 4 GHz. 4.4 GHz is only happening when one or two cores are active.

The lower the gear the higher the IMC frequency so you have lower latency and thus, higher responsiveness. Generally, X MT/s RAM at Gear 1 is better than up to 1.5X MT/s RAM at Gear 2. With 12400F, you're not bandwidth limited in quite literally any scenario anyway, I don't see how this is a workstation rig that chomps on RAM bandwidth like no tomorrow, you're most likely using this for gaming. And this means I'd rather go for ~4.8 GT/s on the RAM with Gear 1 and tightest possible timings.

I'm gonna upgrade case and cpu cooler.

I have one of those brackets already installed. Did zero difference.

I am using MX4 thermalpaste that I used on plenty other systems so it isn't that.

I think the Phantex evolv shift XT is a major part of the problem.

Ah, yeah, I have almost unlimited space and it's usually <16C (<60F) in my room so it is what it is.
