But let's see what W1zzards benchmarks can do before we pull any pins.
Firstly you did very well on the 4080, of course it came later but I'd have bought one at launch for that.

And as for the quote, 100% QFT. No decision can be made till that data is consumed.

Yeah, I waited a couple of months for the dust/hype to settle which I will be doing the same again with this gen. Launch Day prices can be absurd.

The only thing I'd point out here is that they could improve RT performance by 2x and that doesn't necessarily mean double the framerate.

Example:

Say the game in Raster runs at 10ms frame times = 100 fps

Adding RT effects on 40 series costs an additional 6.6ms frame time, totalling 16.6ms or 60fps

Running the RT effect on 50 series (with equivalent raster) costs now half of that at 3.3ms, totalling 13.3ms or 75fps

Twice the RT performance, definitely not twice the actual resulting FPS.

Vague numbers pulled from my ass, because of course we'd expect a 5090 vs 4090 to also have improved raster performance and have a higher framerate without RT too, but there are lots of factors that affect this, including the CPU holding back these monstrous GPU's. I've had anywhere from mild, to significant, to crazy increases on my 3080 going from a 5800X3D to 9800X3D, so I'd wager there would be many situations a 5090 is not showing it's true potential even with a 9800X3D and at 4k, that potential may only be realised years/multiple CPU gens down the road.
Very well explained and this is why we need to test RT performance at the heavy RT games and not on ligthweights. To isolate the RT performance as best as possible. Farcry 6 and Resi village aint that.

My guess is if it ends up lets say 30-40% faster in raw performance it will be 50-60% faster in heavy RT workloads. We saw a similar thing with the 4090 vs the 3090 just I don't think we will get the same gains this generation.

It can be a double edged sword, 9800X3D has only gone up locally since launch, more than 10% now, so I'm glad I snagged at launch. No guarantees which way that can swing though.

Glad you appreciate it, it's important to understand the true costs and how it all comes together.

According to the specs it should be 40+ in both raster and RT. Not a huge jump to be fair, cause 4090 is struggling in those heavy PT titles, and so will the 5090.

I cheaped out on a 4080 so I could put that extra 1k towards a 5090 but yeah, is there any way of sounding smart buying a 5090 besides saying you're into generative AI?
I don’t know about that mate, I think that just saying “I got the money and like purrdy video games” would be infinitely more respectable than “ah, yes, I am too a GeNeRaT1Ve AI enthusiast, mmm, I say”.

If I didn't have a 2 year old I would buy one even if it was stupid.... But he is the priority now... Life happens...

Overall I'm slightly disappointed in the raw raster uplift of the 5090 (maybe around 30%?), but then again the only game that I play that need raw raster is PUBG which even the fastest gaming CPU in the world is the bottleneck rather than the GPU.

I play a lot of new AAA games and PT/DLSS/FG matter alot more than pure raster, If the new DLSS4 SR looks as good as advertised I can just use 4K Performance mode and be happy :D

As for prices, I already set aside a budget to buy what I want every year haha, my wife doesn't complain since I stay home with her all the time anyways :D

This is true, but the 9800X3D is a hell of a lot more affordable than a 5080/90 and AMD didn't allow for demand.

In saying that, prices of 4090's grew over msrp for a period of time there but I also call this out to the AI sector.

Will be interesting to see if these 5090's fly off the shelves at a heightened price point over the 4090 being commercial or not.

Im fxxked either way. It's hard to keep everybody happy.

When i said a 2000$ price on a top tier GPU will seem like a good price, my buddies laughed, now they're thinking about upgrading, these 5000 series prices look very good to them; who could have possibly guessed.
I refuse to pay for Jensen's leather jackets, especially the shiny ugly ones like the one he wore this year.
C ya when the 6000 nGreedia series and AMD RX whatever it's called are launched. Buh bye!

I'm sure the 5090 is still going to Kick A$$ and hopefully MFFG is good and lets be honest for some buyers all these cards will be decent especially people still sitting on 10/20 series products.

I see Nvidia's market capitalisation is inching towards 4090 billion $. Intel's is 86 billion $.

That was exactly my point, the prices they were used to seeing since 2019 brainwashed them into thinking 2000$ is a reasonable price.

$2500 AIB likely. ;)
My estimation was >$3000 originally, considering AIB, and I still stand by it. Not much FE availability for the rest of the world anyway. Said 30% more on average, just to avoid sounding as a doom prophet. TPU is a sensitive space.

Just a reminder for those pushing for high pricing the 4090 had plenty of aib partners cards at $1599 MSRP pricing at launch. The delta performance would have to be there more than the what was presented outside of dlss with raw numbers imo. So do not buy scalped and or wait for the second hand market 4090s price correction to probably drop to midpoint between 5090 and 5080 levels.
Also Blackwell launch is quickly becoming a meme launch.

Prices look good, except 5090. Jensen's in fantasy land with that one. I'm not paying two THOUSAND dollars for that. WAY overpriced. NOT worth it. All others are in line with previous gen, so this is just gouging.

So, not having read all of this thread, I am actually surprised that both the 5070 and 5070Ti have a lower MSRP than their Ada counterparts had on release if this is accurate.

That's a very good point. Blender or games with path tracing should reveal the true increase in ray tracing performance. The 4090, for instance, is twice as fast as the 3090 in these cases.

Nvidia has proven they can increase performance without actually changing a whole lot in hardware. So the question is how much are you willing to pay for software for your gpu?
My opinion is the software shouldn't cost more than the hardware. You are now paying for a software service.
