NVidia now HIDING hot spot temperature? A great problem IMO.

I'm seeing the same pattern again and again, and even though I might be overreacting a bit, these kind of discussions are always end up being of very poor quality indeed. I'm kinda tired of it, maybe I should take a break or something.

I don't think you're overreacting, this pattern is indeed happening. And make that both of us...

If we really can't see hotspot temps, that is indeed a problem ! High hotspot temp is a great way of seeing if a gpu has a bad paste job and needs a repaste !

Saying that since nvidia engineers know best, that sensor is not needed is also of very poor quality.
Let's just remove all the sensors, why bother since nvidia engineers know what they are doing.
Maybe just one reading 1 or 0 depending if the card is running or not.
I have a better idea - why does the card produce an image on your monitor as a sign that it's working? It is truly not necessary. A blank screen is enough, just trust that the engineers know what they're doing, so your card is working whether you see that or not.

The younger generations have never experienced stuff like this before, so they are freaking out
The younger generations also didn't have GPUs that didn't need any sensors, or fans, or even heatsinks. Modern GPUs do.

I don't think you're overreacting, this pattern is indeed happening. And make that both of us...
Make it three. I'm sick and tired of this fake positivity shit that everything X company does is always right, and whoever criticises, or questions it is an idiot. (what 'X company' means depends on the person you ask)

Hot spot temperature reporting is not something I care about, and I mostly buy NVIDIA cards. The people that care about this fake outrage are usually AMD fanatics pushing an agenda.
Now that I have confessed to buying NVIDIA (because I need/use CUDA), those who do this can feel free to label me as a member of the "other team" and go crazy with your nonsense, I won't bother to read it.

Great since it was you who started to label people as AMD fanatics. So as a matter of fact yes you can be labeled as fanatic yourself, just with a different color.

What's all this rage about? One does not simply walk into a conversation, and win it by calling one party fanatics. If it was that easy, I'd just call everybody a fanatic. "You're all fanatics!" See? I win. ;)

Back in the day..... (damn, yeah I'm old).... that is exactly how it was. When overclocking my Geforce3 Ti200 after I lapped the cooler and repasted, clocks were bumped using RivaTuner until the card started to show artifacts. There were no on chip temperature sensors. Some enthusiast sites would attach thermistors on the PCB behind the GPU but for most of the common users, it was always a ballet between voltage, clocks, and cooling with a bit of guesswork. Most instances, better cooling would allow us to push further until a limit was reached.

Cards didn't have all these boost functions either. Cards didn't pull 600W either, 600W that needs to go somewhere. Cards didn't cost $2000+ either.

But sure it's probably not a big deal, but it's also one of those things that "time will tell".

Geee I wonder who knows more about what constitutes the health status of a GPU. Is it you, or NVIDIA engineers?
How do you or anyone even know it was the engineer who removed it? The marketing team could've asked for it to be removed.

More likely the bean counters, cause too many gpu's came back on rma from people who didnt wanna potentially void their warranty by repasting their gpu... remove the ability to easily tell that the gpu has a sh1t paste job, problem solved !

You got ram that can run at 90c for god knows how long, I highly doubt the temp of the hotspot matters at that point.

That is a dangerous precedent to set that if allowed unmitigated will turn PCs into locked-down Apple clones.
I dare say that we are already there with the relentles push for proprietary crap like DLSS.
Back in the day, real reviewers and smart consumers would call out any type of bullshit like DLSS because they saw a mile away that its main function is to limit your options as a consumer by locking you into one vendor.

Does that sounds familiar?
The younger generations have never experienced stuff like this before,
See above. I keep bringing this up exactly because the younger generations doenst understand or see the perils of being locked into one vendor.

Thats one hill that I am willing to die on.

I gladly use FSR over DLSS not because its from AMD but because it doesnt force me to use an AMD GPU.
Back in the day..... (damn, yeah I'm old).... that is exactly how it was. Most instances, better cooling would allow us to push further until a limit was reached.
And because of those people going the extra mile (using thermistors) is why hardware vendors ended adding these sensors!

I re-TIM'ed my RX 6750 XT, because of high hotspot delta. But I never saw it reach 100C. Never insane like that!

Yeah, cause having part of the chip running considerably hotter totally doesnt affect how much voltage you need to keep the chip stable...

Yeap.
Rdna 3 top end GPUs had a small issue with a bad batch of coolers, which were missing some coolant in their heat pipes.
But of course, the media went crazy, same for the haters and the negative articles were fast and furious.
It was fixed quickly but the damage was done .

Heh, Nvidia tried many, many times to have a proprietary feature that gamers will buy their GPU's for and hats off to them as they kept at it through thick and thin. They kept failing and consumers never really gave in for a long time. I remember Kyle over at [H] and a few others butchered nvidia so hard in one of the articles they actually took back or never released something dodgy that they were cooking up, can't remember what exactly it was. Don't think it was TWIMTBP but my god was that another shitshow.

I still chuckle at hairworks when i fire up witcher 3, You want nice hair for Geralt? You need an nvidia card for fuck all reason. Of course, just like most of nvidia's proprietary features at the time, it was crap with little to no difference in fidelity (hello RT, hairworks, excessive tesselation etc) for the performance impact. And of course it could be processed with AMD GPU's, just like they locked down bokeh and a few other features to nvidia GPU's only in Just Cause 2. The list is massive.

DLSS and RT are the ones that stuck but nvidia did go all in on both including a name change altogether. DLSS is great as it allowed playable framerates with not much of a visual impact but for me it really depends on the game. I still can't even turn DLSS on in Warzone, FH5 and a couple of titles because it's..shit. But as a whole it was good as it pushed AMD to release FSR which helped a lot of gamers extend the life of their GPU's from both camps.

RT though, don't even get me started. Great for people who like it and more power to them, but for me it's a piece of shit in its present form. It offers very little visual impact for a massive performance drop. Give me better textures instead maybe, those 4k/8k texture mods sure look great in the older games. There's no turning back though and RT is here to stay so how about you do it in moderation and not excessively resulting in 15fps for nvidia and 5 for AMD. Maybe bake it in the engine or something like what UE is doing I suppose. They did the same with tessellation till they realised they were only screwing the consumers and it wasn't helping their bottom line and just went on to the next thing.

Yeah, cause having part of the chip running considerably hotter totally doesnt affect how much voltage you need to keep the chip stable...
What are you gonna do?

It has LM, It has the fans, the engineering, the materials.

Maybe it was designed that way..

My only concern is that engineered life may be well-shorter than we've long come to expect.

NGL, seeing the 5090 FE teardown and performance #s has me intrigued.
$900-1100 for an XTX or $2k*+ for a 5090 that performs ~67-100% faster than the 7900 XTX? (*Pipedream, ofc; scalpers gon a scalp)
