8BitDo has released another variant of its popular Ultimate Wireless Controller; this time in "No. 2" sequel form. At first glance, this modernized variant looks very familiar. There are major changes—external and internal—present on this new iteration; according to 8BitDo's product page. The company has upgraded their flagship model with Tunneling Magnetoresistance (TMR) joysticks; hardcore controller enthusiasts have deemed this emerging standard as the "superior" choice. Manufacturers and supporters have claimed that TMR sticks are "more precise" and less power hungry, when compared to Hall Effect equivalents. 8BitDo is catching up with its main competition; GameSir and GuliKit are notable rivals—with several TMR-based models already available at retail.

The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller ($59.99) borrows several modern features from a budget-friendly sibling: the Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller ($29.99). Customizable extra shoulder bumpers/buttons (R4 and L4) are welcome additions, as well as updated wireless (2.4 GHz) and wired connections with a maximum 1000 Hz polling rate. Early adopters reckon that the latest model sports 8BitDo's much-improved D-pad design. Rear toggles are advertised as offering: "easy switching between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios." The Ultimate 2 and Ultimate 2C models are compatible with PC and Android platforms, but the more expensive option is decked out with rear paddles, RGB Fire Ring lighting effects, and is supplied with a slick-looking magnetic charging dock. Insiders believe that 8BitDo will be releasing Nintendo Switch and Xbox-oriented versions in the near future.

8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless feature set:
  • TMR Joysticks
  • "8-Speed"—Ultra-low latency and stable 2.4 GHz connection
  • 1000 Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4 GHz and wired connection)
  • Fire Ring - RGB lighting joysticks
  • Extra bumpers (R4 and L4)
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons
  • Trigger mode switch
  • Hall Effect Triggers
  • Tactile bumpers and D-pad
  • 6-axis motion control
  • Turbo function
  • Vibration
  • Supports 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2

What you say choom?

Another website has it listed as electromagnetic sticks.

If this had a replaceable easy pop out battery, this would be a 10/10 winner. This is just going to e-waste in 5 years though when the lithium battery no longer holds a charge.

Luckily, my xbox 360 controller has no stick drift after all these years and i just keep using AA rechargeable batteries with it

My XBox360 controller also still works great, even despite a liquid spill some years ago. On the other hand, I'm about to lose a second XBox One controller to stick drift, and I won't buy a third. I've only ever used 1st party controllers, always wired to reduce weight (or wire-capable with removable batteries) and reduce latency or interference.

Anyone here have an old 8BitDo controller that's held up well for many years?

yeah I sometimes do no batteries and wired mode with my xbox 360 controller too, the extra lightness is quite nice sometimes

Now I just need the Pro 2's (Pro 3 maybe?) to have TMR sticks and 1000Hz polling and I'll be all set.

Although the extra bumpers would be the very useful too.

I have the 8bitdo pro controller as well, its a good controller, but if I could sell it for this one I would. TMR sticks and 1000hz polling do sound kind of neat, though I wonder if 1000hz polling will mess up emulating older games?

I don't think that should cause any problems with older software. The high polling rate ensures that any input data is not lost (which causes delays and such). Then again this depends on the emulator used and what kind of accuracy its going for.

This can be felt in games with a lot of input, like fighting games and FPS (for those who like playing FPS on controller). This is especially felt in Apex Legends since I practice on both M&K and controller.
