Upon hearing that nearly 75% of all Blu-ray drives people own are built in to the PS3, Microsoft decided that the Xbox360 was a great way to promote the adoption of HD-DVD. However, if the player costs too much, nobody will go for it. And so, Microsoft lowered the price of the HD-DVD add-in drive to $129USD. You can nab one for yourself at Amazon and Toys R Us, if you're looking for a low-cost HD-DVD player. The drive can also be plugged into any PC and work just like it would on the Xbox360.

shame that the uk isn't getting this price cut also, as i would love to get one and transformers

Meh, it is great if you already have an Xbox360, but if you don't the cost isn't that great. I would rather get a stand alone player anyway.

Plus 6 free movies if you buy now from amazon,(one with the drive, and 5 in the mail).
I wonder if this will increase the sales of 360's? Will have to wait and see.

$129!! That's great, I thought the price of $179 was great already...might pick one up if I don't get a PS3, or Wii.

if you want to get the drive working on your pc
http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2006/11/8303/

I wonder if you can put it internally into a PC. Obviously you'll still need to use the odd connector and daugherboard, but you could probably just shove that into an unused drive bay. Then you'd need a USB-A to USB header connector to plug it directly into the motherboard. It could be kind of cool and much cheaper than buying an internal HD-DVD player anywhere else.

Still isn't enough in my opinion...It needs to be included with the 360, then the console would perfect.

But the thing is, not everyone wants an HD-DVD player because it would raise the cost of the 360, and not everyone would like that. I think that it's good that it's an option. If HD-DVD falls, great, it's only an add-on, and it's not required to play games.

I never understood why they don't make a model like the elite that has the HD-DVD rom drive built into it. Obviously, they cannot require use of the HD-DVD rom drive because other people have X360s that don't have it at all. And while this would make the console more expensive, if you don't want it, buy the Arcade or Premium. The HD-DVD rom drive would be purely for playing movies, as it is now, with the changes that it is built into the X360, and runs regular X360 DVD games.

At our current time, the "Elite" isn't so elite IMHO.

What about the people that want HD-DVD but don't have an Elite, they already got an Xbox 360? What now...then MS will have to have both an HD-DVD add-on and the Xbox 360 w/ built in HD-DVD. Your idea would work great if it was released during the launch of the Xbox 360, or closely after launch. But after millions already bought an Xbox 360 Core/Pro, it makes more sense to release an add-on than have a whole new console with the HD-DVD.

I understand what you're saying though.

What do you mean? The HD-DVD add on is already available. Just look at ToysRUs or Amazon. It's been out for a long time. The people with an Arcade or Premium could still buy it even if the Elite came with one built in.

Microsoft already did something pretty similar with it's storage mechanism. With the Arcade, you get a 256mb memory card. With Elite/Premium, you get a HDD. Now, no game requires HDD, but the Elite/Premium have one anyway. If you want one on your Arcade, no one is stopping you from going out and buying one separately, but if you want it from the get go, that option is available.

I misread your first one, sorry about that ;) I thought you meant that that's what they should have done in the first place, but I see what you're trying to say now...go on...lol sorry.
