took about 2 hours, wasn't to hard, started with 400 to flatten it out, went to 800 for about 20 minutes, then 1000, and the 1200, then 1500, and that's all it took, did it right at the computer desk and watched a movie that's all

i'm glad you like it, temps are good about 32idle right now and 45 full load 3.38 1.50v

looks like that's all you did today. it should be at peak performance now... if you lap your CPU the same.

i run my lapped q6600 with no TIM cooled by my d-tek fusion and i get an idle temp of 27c.

well i hope it's flat, i lapped with a 5" by 3" by 1/2" sheet of science grade pyrex that i got just for this job, i believe this sheet of glass could possibly be one of the flattest surfaces ever?? and it's pyrex so it never flexes and it's thick just to be safe.

by the way guys whoever said lapping takes hours to do is full of sh!t, it took almost but not quite 2 hours of my day, and that's hardely any time, the trick is a lot of water, keep the paper wet so it moves freely, and make sure you start in the 400 grit range to get it flat right away, then jump to 800 then 1000 and if you're happy at 1000 and it's flat still, jump of to 1500 and finish it off, and remember you do 1 side and then turn 90 degrees, and then do another side and keep turning in the same motion, this is not done to make life hard, it's done because if what your using isn't completely flat doing in on all four sides in a circle will lessen the effects of your movements, i think it came out beautifully, and it didn't take long at all

W0h man, that's a good and cute finish of the base, cheers :) :)

I lapped mine two days ago, took me more than 2 hours, about 4 ... but i sanded specially: JUST ONE DIRECTION, always up, making this the final sand is much smoother and it doesn't produces much heat, so the material don't get suffered that much and we will never find any splinter, it's a slower but smoother method. I used the movement in 90º also and begin curling, 3-5-7-10-10-7-5-3 movements up in all the directions ... that means, 3 movings up, turning 90º, 3 movings more, turning 90º ... when completed the 4 sides, start "5" curl and so ... i used it in all the sandpapers, though at 800, 1200 and 2000 i doubled the process since i had not mid-range papers.

I found paper till 500 on the shops, but i couldn't get any further so i decided to go to a car-paint workshop near my house to see if they had that ranges of paper and could borrow me something ... and they did! 800, 1200 and 2000 sandpapers for FREE! :D There is just one point i failed, the polish solution, i bought the cheapest one and the end-look is not as good as yours ... so what polish solution did you use?

This is my final result, cute smooth mirror-glass, though next time i need to improve my polish solution clearly (sorry about the quality, though it's a macro of Quickcam 9000 pro -carl zeiss- just let me make the photo on HD -video- mode, strange i'll try to make photos with the SLR when i'll clean again the HSF) The temps downgraded between 1º-3ºC on idle and 5-7ºC on full tasks on a lower speed of the HSF fan so i'm happy too. If you have between 1 and 3 hours free consider to do this job, it's not as hard as it seems and it's the -5ºC more cheap you can get.

Keep up the good job exodusprime1337!!! :toast:

PS: Maybe in a year i'll lap the CPU too, we'll see :D

i didn't actually use polish sir keldon, that was the reason why you go both ways with sandpaper, i worked up to 1500 grit and when you go one way and then back and then turn the paper and press very lightly on the copper it won't leave as many scratches, then use the same piece of 1500/2000 grit untill it wears itself out and becomes more of a polish paper istead of a sandpaper and you end up with a very smooth surface without needing to use polish. all i have here at my house is brasso from my days in the us navy for my belt buckles and i didn't feel like going to get any other polish, nor did i prefer using it (plus we got a foot of snow yesterday here) so i did it without, and it's working out marvolously

Thank you so much!! It was my first "hard" lapping i've ever done ... used that technique cause my uncle was a good carpenter and he knew how to sand wood pretty well, i thought it will be the same on metal for not damaging it, but clearly as you're saying, it's not. My polish solution is as yours, the most typical one (though here it's "Pulimento Líquido Titanlux") ... next time i'll clean the HSF, i'll do the 1500/2000 lapping again as you say and i'll tell you.

Btw, everywhere i read, you guys are using Arctic Silver (which contains silver -metallic- particles), i'm actually using Arctic Cooling MX-2 compound (they say it's as good -or even better- as silver but doesn't contain any metal particles so it won't fuck your CPU or surrounding components if thermal compund stays on CPU pins or over the components) ... i'm really using a good thermal compound or should i give a try to the arctic silver?

unless ur using a naked cpu, try out artic silver 5! it has lowered the temps on all of the machines that ive used it on, plus its fairly cheap. compared to Arctic silver ceramique, there really isn't too much of a difference, maybe a degree or two. generally people go with as5 if they want the lowest temps.

looks like that's all you did today. it should be at peak performance now... if you lap your CPU the same.

i run my lapped q6600 with no TIM cooled by my d-tek fusion and i get an idle temp of 27c.

unsual fits but sensible if both surfaces are smooth and flat and under reasonable pressure

tis kind of sacrilege to suggest thow to the majority who seem to think some gloop has magical properties.. he he

d-tek is bowed with oversized o-ring. i use the quick mount kit instead of the spring mount. quick mount is the same design that intels stock cooler uses but on the d-tek it pushes the block on the cpu a lot harder than the spring mount. i have tested different compounds and methods of mounting but nothing seems to work as well as the bowed fusion with the d-tek quick mount and no TIM.
